Angelina (known as Linny) is a character who was the best friend and past partner[3] of Kevin Ayuso.

Appearance & Personality[]

Kevin describes Angelina as adorable, cute, and short. He notes that she was wearing an eagle feather in her hair the day she found him, although he can't remember which kind.

Kevin says Angelina was smart and implies that she was not well-mannered, calling her an "Indian[4] girl with personality!"

Compiled Overview[]

Background[]

Angelina is a girl from a Cherokee[5] tribe. One winter day after getting lost in a snowstorm,[6] Angelina found Kevin fallen in a pile of snow after angering an ox in his barn. She saved him from freezing to death in the snow and helped him get back home.[7] After that day, they became close friends, and Kevin grew deep feelings for her. Angelina taught him about her tribe's culture and gifted him her lasso.

Kevin states that they picked fruit together, with Angelina sitting on his shoulders to reach the tree branches. He says that once, while picking fruit together, she told him a story about a man and a woman who stole a fruit that didn't belong to them.[8][9]

At one point, Kevin believes that his parents even regarded Angelina as their own daughter, making gingerbread cookies that resembled Kevin and Angelina during Christmas the year that she and Kevin met.[6]

However, Kevin's parents saw a bounty for Native Americans in exchange for cattle, and secretly exchanged Kevin's best friend as her "beneficiaries." Angelina was killed. Angelina's death at the hands of Kevin's parents was a major turning point of Kevin's life, as well as the source of guilt that wracks him later on.

Legacy[]

Kevin ran into Angelina's parents and tribe some years after her death. When they found him, he was starving and freezing in the cold. They saved him and took him in, adopting him. They recognized Angelina's lasso in his possession and grew excited that she may be alive, but Kevin, haunted by his part in her death, could not bear to tell them that she was killed years ago. He decided to let them believe that she'd simply run away by saying he hadn't seen her since the winter the two had met. However, even this lie weighed on his conscience, and he left the tribe as well with all his worldly possessions because he couldn't handle living with the fact that he'd lied to them about the death of their member.

At the Manor, Kevin's protective and wild traits as well as his fondness of women and dislike of men is him projecting his feelings towards Angelina and self-hatred towards himself onto others. [10]

During his Manor Game, Kevin was protective of Patricia Dorval because she reminded him of Angelina. Kevin took the poisoned wine during his game, and reminisced on his wish to be a hero worthy of Angelina's admiration.

At one point, Kevin met the Manor's owner, and was given a concoction that tampers with his memories. He left the manor believing Angelina is alive and waiting for him to return.

Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]

  • Angelina's body was never found, so it is possible that she may have escaped the bounty hunters and may still be alive after having run away.

Events[]

  • Christmas 2020 (Cowboy's Route)
  • Midsummer Reminiscing 2021 (Log-in Day 1)
  • Island Summer Diaries 2022
    • Musing 1: Kevin wistfully imagines going on a vacation and surfing with Angelina, and wonders what sort of gift he would give her. He dismisses all his ideas as too inadequate to show his love for her, and vows that he would protect her no matter what if he was given the chance to once more.
    • Musing 2: Kevin reflects on the art of divination and reminds himself that those who have passed on cannot be brought back, referring to Angelina.
    • Musing 3: Kevin reminisces on roasting corn over a fire with an old friend, who is highly likely to be Angelina.
    • Conversation with a female tourist: Kevin comforts a fellow tourist who is mourning a person dear to her by telling her that "although they have passed, we must shoulder the responsibilities they leave to us and live bravely and tenaciously as they would have wanted." He is likely sharing with her his perspective on coping with Angelina's death.

Cosmetics[]

  • Twilight Voyager - the listless longing Kevin feels is likely for her
  • Boomerang - the "past that knocks you off your feet" are his feelings of grief and longing for Angelina
  • Paper Wishes - it is implied she is the "loved one" he wishes to bring home
  • Grilled Corn - the help he received while alone and helpless in the winter is likely referring to Angelina and the Chief, and the corn grilled around the fire is also likely to be with Angelina, as mentioned above in Musing 3.

  2. Angelina's given name was most likely in Siouan rather than English, and the name Angelina was either given to her by Kevin, or chosen by her parents once her tribe increased contact with the colonizers
  3. Kevin's third letter, his experiment case file, was updated on the September 14th, 2023 maintenance with wording changes. One of which were changing Angelina's reference to being that of a "past partner", which may imply they'd been romantically involved.
  4. As a cowboy from the 1800s, Kevin still uses the word "Indian" in reference to Native Americans.
  5. In Cowboy's 2019 Letter, the tribe was stated to be Sioux (the endonym of the tribe is Oceti Sakowin, two allied bands known as the Dakota and the Lakota) but in Cowboy's Character Relations Web added in 2024 her father is referred to as the Cherokee Chieftain. In the Chinese version of the relations web, the tribe's name is 切洛族, which combines characters from Cherokee (羅基), Iroquois (易魁), and Sioux (苏). While all three are indigenous nations in North America, they each have distinct cultures that should not be represented collectively.
  6. 6.0 6.1 Kevin's Christmas 2020 dialogue.
  7. Kevin's 'Gratitude' Deduction calls her "his savior", and the deduction references a fireplace, likely Kevin's home.
  8. This is likely referencing the Biblical tale of the Garden of Eden. It is unclear how Angelina would have known a Biblical story if Kevin was her first exposure to the colonizers, unless her parents told her.
  9. It is unclear when this could have happened, as Kevin's 'Hesitation' Deduction states that they were only good friends for one winter, implying that his parents sold her for the bounty at the end of the season.
  10. Explicitly stated in Cowboy's 2021 Letter.
