Baron DeRoss is an overarching antagonist who frequently appears in letters and deductions, but whose appearance has not been revealed. From the details of his connections with the other in-game characters, he is likely the owner of Oletus Manor.
Compiled Overview[]
Background[]
Dennis DeRoss, Baron DeRoss' father, owned a large manor where he lived with his wife and two children - a son and daughter. Under his employ was a genius architect named Burke Lapadura who was in charge of manor security, and a gamekeeper named Bane Perez who was in charge of watching the forests part of his estate. As well as Burke and Bane, the DeRoss family also kept on a number of other workers in order to "boost the local employment rates. Even if such an action posed a risk to their property." During this period Burke made Guard 26 as part of the manor security.
The children were very interested in Burke's inventions and the forest Bane protected, despite the warnings from both adults of how dangerous they could be.
Connections[]
As a well-connected gentleman, Baron DeRoss was a friend and confidant for many people, including Sister Lorraine who asked him for help with a difficult case at the White Sand Street Asylum. He also knew Servais Le Roy and his magic teacher John Henry Anderson, and "Jack" the Ripper's painting teacher, James Whistler.
Loss and Madness[]
After a group of poachers hunted down Bane's pet Elk, Bane was severely injured and Guard 26 chased them off with his inserted weaponry. During Bane's recovery and while Burke was readjusting Guard 26, an angry mob including "familiar faces" swarmed the manor, killed Dennis and his wife, and took away the two children.
This led each of the survivors of the incident into a downward spiral and twisted their goals and personalities. Bane lost his mercy and the grounds became known as the "Forest of No Return." Burke became even more obsessed with his machines, and filled them with even more dangerous weapons. Baron DeRoss eventually became owner of the Manor and began writing strange invitations to certain Manor Games.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- It is likely that Baron DeRoss is Orpheus, as he adores the DeRosses and may have taken over their manor some time and their surname after their deaths using the money he earned from his novels.
- Orpheus has also likely had an interaction with Ada Mesmer in his attempt to gain information on Alice DeRoss's whereabouts during her stay at an asylum, which mirrors the contents of Ada's Letter.
- The developers indirectly state in an Ashes of Memory video that Orpheus is behind the Manor Games.
- The Enchanted Forest mode's rumor explicitly states Orpheus led participants into a "new game".
