Caroline Samwell is Fiona Gilman's mother. She is a stern, strict woman who placed extremely high expectations on Fiona.

Appearance[]

Caroline Samwell is described as a woman with "suffocating green eyes".[1]

Compiled Overview[]

Caroline Samwell was a renowned astronomer and part of an esteemed family in Scotland. At some point, she married a man with the last name Gilman who was an accomplished writer. The two would have a daughter, Fiona Gilman. When Fiona was young, she excelled at astronomy and science which pleased Caroline. However, this would lead to Caroline and her husband having disagreements about how to educate their daughter, with Caroline choosing a strict scientific based education opposing her husband's preference towards more literary and imaginative education. This opposition would lead to the two getting a divorce, with Caroline raising Fiona alone.

With her ex-husband off to explore the world, there was no one to stop Caroline from educating Fiona as she pleased, creating a rigid studying environment for Fiona. Despite his absence, her ex-husband still sent letters to Fiona, often including strange ideas and toys such as a phenakistiscope. However, as time went on, Fiona started to fail to meet her mother's expectations, getting confused during tutoring and having her mind wander instead of paying attention.[2] Fiona, following her father's footsteps, became more entranced illusions and reality itself. Taking advice from a letter he sent her, would go to explore the world, heading towards Calcutta. After her departure, communication between Fiona and Caroline was little to none, with the last contact between the two being a letter Fiona sent to Caroline, wishing her a happy birthday. After that letter, Fiona would seemingly vanish.

While learning about Fiona's disappearance, Alice DeRoss would come into contact with Caroline, requesting a meeting with her. Caroline seemed indifferent towards matters regarding her daughter, not showing any worry about her disappearance and irritation when questioned further.

Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]

  • It is unknown if Caroline had any insight into Fiona's disappearance as Alice brings up the possibility in the Investigation Field Notes.[3]
