History[]

In the 19th century, Dennis and his wife purchased a manor in a remote mountain area of Glasgow, Scotland for a cheap price due to the manor's low reputation. After moving into the manor, the two began to renovate it. Dennis, who was an artist, filled the manor with imagery of the Nine Muses. To please his wife, who was a composer, Dennis incorporated musical elements into the manor. They brought their own staff to the manor, including the son of a couple in the staff, a father that is named Mr. Blanche who either worked as a gardener or a forest ranger, and a maid named Mrs. Blanche who was part of housekeeping services.

Between 1880 and 1881,[2] Dennis' wife would later give birth to their daughter named Alice and had a good influence on her. The son of the couple and Alice were close friends, and would often play together. One of the games they played was reenacting the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, and it became the names they referred to each other by. This is where the name Orpheus of the protagonist character originates.[1] At some point, the DeRoss family invested in a private clinic for the wealthy and would later additionally build a mission hospital.[3]

Expansion of Local Employment[]

Upon listing several aged newspaper jobs, Dennis and his wife relied on personal recommendations of hiring additional staff to acquaint within the manor based on their qualifications. At an unspecified point, the DeRoss family sought out a genius architect to lead on an expansion project for the manor's defense system. After reviewing the candidate's local references, they requested their intermediary named Mrs. Trenche to engage and invite him over.[4] Under their employment was Burke Lapadura who was in charge of manor security, and a gamekeeper named Bane Perez who was in charge of watching the forests part of the estate. During this period, Burke made Guard 26 as part of the manor security.

As well as how prepared the staff is, the DeRoss family also kept on a number of other workers in order to "boost the local employment rates. Even if such an action posed a risk to their property."[5] The children were very interested in Burke's inventions and the forest Bane protected, despite the warnings from both adults of how dangerous they could be. After a group of poachers hunted down Bane's pet elk and severely injured him, Guard 26 was deployed by Burke to chase them off with its inserted weaponry. This incident was drowned from attention of Alice's upcoming birthday party, as the family’s two most trusted employees were focusing on separate crises starring with Bane trying to recover and Burke fixing Guard 26.

On May 5th, 1887,[6] Dennis found his daughter hiding in his own master bedroom and brought younger Alice out of his bookshelf entrance. He politely asks Alice how she found his secret door, and she reveals that Orpheus was the one who found its hidden mechanism before pointing out his painting of Hermes guiding lost souls across the River Styx next to it. Impressed by Alice's knowledge, Dennis brings up a topic of a missing flute, Hermes' staff and questioned her current search on it. However, he took concern of noticing Alice's melancholy and gestured her to sit down on a couch for a conversation, which she would shortly admit that she lost Hermes' staff.

According to younger Alice, she and Orpheus planned to go check on a doe giving birth to fawns and Black Nose the other day through his secret passageway, but was informed that Mrs. Blanche has contracted lung cancer. Additionally, she tells him that Orpheus rushed back to his family's home, leaving his flute behind inside the manor and was the only one who tried to find his flute but to no avail. While Dennis was glad that Alice made her way back here safely and understood the truth at first, he gently insists her not to venture into Bane's forest again.

In order to cheer Alice up, Dennis brought out his wife's special gift from his desk drawer and showed her a necklace. Once he puts it on Alice, he also reveals the missing flute she was looking for and hands it to her, playfully advising Alice to tell Orpheus the truth about taking his flute. Shortly after, Dennis told Alice about the Blanches (excluding Mr. Blanche) waiting for her arrival at the ballroom with her mother there, setting up preparations for her birthday. Before younger Alice was about to force her father to leave, Dennis urgently needed to send an "important letter" to Lord Melbourne first and asked for his delivery by morning. At some point, Dennis reassures Alice that he'll meet up with her at the ballroom and bid her farewell.

Later at night of Alice's birthday, an angry mob of bandits including "familiar faces" swarmed the manor, killed Mrs. DeRoss and brutally beaten Dennis. Three of the bandits would soon chase down the children up to the East wing before they both hid inside a room. Upon the group's arrival, they held Dennis captive and searched around his master bedroom to look for any of his fortunes including Alice and Orpheus. When Dennis was tossed aside by their brute boss, he saw Alice fearfully hiding underneath his parental bed and weakly hushed her. The bandits were too busy looting the family's belongings and praised an old man's efforts for orchestrating the mob attack. However, before leaving the wing, one of the bandits ended up murdering Dennis in front of his own daughter without any mercy. Shortly after the DeRoss couple's deaths, Alice and Orpheus survives the Oletus Manor Massacre but was separated from each other.

  2. It should be noted that the accident that killed her parents happened when she was six years old according to the official website, so she must have been born in 1880 or 1881 when the accident took place before her birthday.
  3. The unknown author details the purpose of the loan transactions in Novelist's/"Nightmare's" 2nd Character Letter, An Investigation Report: "Initially a private clinic for the wealthy, and a mission hospital later on."
  4. Frye Reed addresses to Alice DeRoss in Mad Eyes' 6th Character Day Letter, A Letter Marked for Further Investigation: "The DeRosses appear to have relied mainly on personal recommendations, hiring servants acquainted with the household in a more private manner. Among these, I believe the information concerning the architect Burke Lapadura is worth our special attention. According to Mrs. Trenche, the intermediary, Burke was eccentric yet notably skilled—an artisan whom the DeRosses sought out after reviewing local references and personally requested her to engage. His technical ability had earned him a modest reputation. Following this collaboration, Mrs. Trenche introduced several other hands to the DeRoss household according to their needs."
  5. The conclusion of Guard 26's 7th Deduction Quest, Verbal Passcode: "Test Record 6: No verification methods that require manual verification will be as accurate as a machine, but the DeRosses apparently believed that retaining enough employees would boost the local employment rates. Even if such an action posed a risk to their property."

Burke's warning alone foreshadows that before the massacre, the DeRoss couple wanted to improve a better economy. The fact that sign shows the idea of their staff working tirelessly at Oletus Manor would result consequences they could've foreseen months earlier of risking their lives away.
  6. May 5 is Alice's true birthday, as confirmed in the 27th Official Q&A.
