Investigation Notes
According to the doctor's entries, the owner of the manor used a generous prize as bait and invited them all to meet at the manor to partake in this game.

A Letter for Lorraine, the Nun (2020)
Dear Lorraine:
I made a grave mistake.
This means I won't be able to return to the White Sand Street Asylum and resume my voluntary work for a very long time.
I'm writing to you not to defend my awful behavior but to report to you certain truths I uncovered at work before I leave.
There are some horrible mistakes in the White Sand Street Asylum medical records.
Through the treatment and evaluation of the patient, Lisa Beck, I realized that those children - the children from the orphanage, may not have gentle temperaments. I mean, yes, they're seldom happy, and they seem suspicious or stubborn. Yet to my knowledge, these children aren't that much different from normal children in terms of mentality or behavior. These orphans might have experienced something terrible, or they might just have certain behavioral deviation, but I believe that they deserve a second chance.
I therefore hope that you would evaluate the patients in the asylum once more. For your own safety and certain necessary private concerns, I urge that you seek help from a third party professional.
I know that my suggestion may seem somewhat ridiculous, and perhaps you'll come across certain rumors about me later on, but I've adhered to my oath throughout my treatment of the children.
For the benefit of the patients, for those poor children, please commence the evaluation as soon as possible.
Yours truly,
Lydia Jones
An Invitation (2021)
Dear Ms. Dyer:
Perhaps I should call you Dr. Jones?
Please forgive my interruption.
I'm really sorry about your current situation.
A friend of mine felt somehow responsible for that accident. I was entrusted by him to do whatever I can to turn things around.
What about a sizeable relief fund?
Perhaps we can give each other an opportunity to settle the past?
You're cordially invited to my manor for a visit. You'll find the address and traveling fees enclosed.
Yours sincerely,
DeRoss

Serial No. 4-0-4
Name: Emily Dyer
[Test Indicators]
1. Attention seeking
2. Compassion
3. Salvation
[Inclination]
A "sinner" seeking salvation.
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation:
Due to No. 4-0-4's professional background and experience, I was guarded about her arrival. However, the years she spent fleeing and her own inner torment have dulled her observation skills and judgment. She has thus become a sufficiently safe experiment subject.
2. Methodology:
As intended by the experiment, No. 4-0-4 was overly concerned about and protective toward No. 4-1-1. This inclination escalated as the experiment progressed until it deteriorated.
At the beginning of the experiment, this inclination of No. 4-0-4 was limited to sending friendly signals to No. 4-1-1 and offering protection.
Midway through, No. 4-0-4 realized how dangerous No. 4-1-1 was. Instead of keeping her distance, she elevated her initial protective measures to preventions against potential threats.
During this time, due to key information released on No. 4-0-3, No. 4-0-4 was exposed to danger. In fact, No. 4-0-4 was aware of this, yet she acted as if she didn't care.
Such a typical behavior was verified toward the end of the experiment—between eliminating the security risk against No. 4-1-1 and using the security risk to pass on the threat against her own safety, she chose the former.
3. Experiment Summary:
The effect of No. 4-0-4 acting as the tie among the experiment subjects in this group exceeded expectations.
Our initial premise of the experiment was that she should act as a catalyst for No. 4-1-1 and No. 4-0-3. However, due to complicated past of her and No. 4-1-1, as well as their linked emotions of being in a dangerous situation, a new possibility arose in the experiment's results regarding No. 4-1-1. While this possibility wasn't put into effect, it offered a new approach for subsequent experiments.
At the same time, my observation of No. 4-0-4 made me realize it's relatively difficult to accurately observe and control any experimental effect arising from guilt. When prioritizing redemption and salvation, subjective conscience and objective facts affect each other constantly. Despite the massive amount of supportive data from the experiment subjects, chance still plays a big part and so it's not suitable for use in this phase of the experiment.
A Redacted Hippocratic Oath (2023)
I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment.
Never will I harm a patient, ■■■■■■■■■, ■■■■■■■■■, ■■■■■■■■■.
...
With my pure heart, ■■■■■■■■.
■■■■, ■■■■.
...
Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain for ever reputation among all men for my life and for my art, ■■■■■.
But if I break it, ■■■■■■■■■!
(There is a handwritten message on the back.It seems to be written by a well-educated woman.)
I've broken this oath on numerous occasions.
I've always thought that I had no other choice, and so it wasn't my fault.
But the truth is so many disasters have arisen from my own cowardice, arrogance, or indecision.
And the price for breaking the oath did not arrive on that wailing night in the orphanage, nor did it arrive on the operating table.
Thus, I started to be hopeful that perhaps my kind deeds in the past won me the mercy of the gods.
But the more generous gods are with their blessings, the more demanding they are when they come seeking recompense.
In this strange manner,[TN 2] I finally heard their whispers, asking me to do as I'd sworn.
And it was accompanied by the fragrance of thistle tea.
But if everything I experience here can make up for the oath I broke, then I will gladly accept my fate.
A Message (2024)
"Emily Dyer once sought solace in denial, but the responsibilities she sought to escape eventually caught up with her. Time may heal wounds, but it cannot erase the desire for vengeance or the burden of guilt in her heart. When she honored her old oath amidst the fragrance of thistle, she did not foresee that her personal salvation would culminate in pain and bloodshed."
Lydia Jones: Investigation Field Notes I (2025)
While investigating the White Sand Street Asylum, I obtained a list of medical staff who treated the children there. One doctor, in particular, caught my attention—Dr. Lydia Jones. Her involvement in administering illegal medical treatments piqued my curiosity, leading me to delve deeper into her life and character.
Lydia Jones
Initially, I began gathering photographs of Dr. Lydia Jones. What struck me was the consistent sadness or repression in her expressions, even in formal photographs. It's easy for journalists to overlook the significance of facial expressions in an investigation, often focusing too heavily on written accounts. However, realized that these subtle emotional cues could offer valuable insight into her true nature. Though these were minor details, they compelled me to return for further investigation. However, they were not enough to immediately dismiss the popular perception of her. As my investigation continued, I became convinced that the image of Dr. Jones as a cold-blooded individual, as depicted in the wanted poster, was misleading. Far from being heartless, she seemed to have been struggling with something much deeper—something that tugged at her emotions until the very end. This realization led me to a more sympathetic, albeit wishful, assumption: Dr. Jones may have had blood on her hands, but she was never indifferent. The labels of "compassion" and "salvation" attached to her by others offered me a sense of relief—one that almost saddened me.
During a break in my investigation into the history of White Sand Street, I decided to look into Lydia Jones's background. At the time, 117 White Sand Street, once the site of her clinic, remained abandoned. The glass windows were coated in dust, and the clinic's sign—LYDIA JONES'S CLINIC—was marred by scratches, clearly showing signs of neglect and hostility. It was apparent that fear and hatred had taken over the space; no one dared to take over the clinic of someone so vilified.
I spent hours inside the clinic, sifting through the debris, hoping to find something useful. As I did, I attracted the attention of nearby residents. Once I explained my purpose, some were eager to share what they knew. They recounted how they had long recognized signs that Dr. Jones was evil. They mentioned how she appeared disgusted when treating the poor, or how she would wash her hands repeatedly after changing the clinic's business operations. Others, however, expressed pity for my involvement, as if I were trying to sift through rot in search of gold.
Eventually, the crowd dispersed, but one teenager remained behind. She didn't contribute to the group discussion but instead watched me quietly, with a hint of caution, as I finished my work.
("I must... I must make sure you aren't mishandling anything in the clinic.")
The thin, scrawny girl raised her voice slightly, striving to sound formal, as though to muster the courage to negotiate with a stranger like myself. She wasn't dressed warmly enough for early spring, and the skin exposed from the hems of her pants showed old scars. Her family clearly wasn't well off. It occurred to me then that, since the name Lydia Jones had appeared on a wanted poster, this girl was likely the first person who had willingly sided with Dr. Jones, protecting both her reputation and the clinic's.
As I shared my impressions of Dr. Jones, the girl's diligent eyes scanned me once more. Once she seemed satisfied, this girl, who called herself Mia, led me to a chair in the corner. Nervously, she explained that she had little time, as she had chores to complete at home, but she wanted to help in any way she could.
("Lydia is my friend. I don't believe what others say about her. No one has treated me better. I'm waiting for her to come back. I don't want this clinic to be ruined by those bastards," she said, her voice trembling with emotion."
"You're a journalist. Can you vouch for her? Maybe it will bring her back here.")
From Mia's account, I learned that the clinic's early patients were mostly people like her—those struggling financially. I was surprised to learn that the patient Dr. Jones had supposedly shown disgust for was actually Mia's guardian. Lydia had been forced to make difficult decisions throughout her career, and the reality of her work was far more complex than the Hippocratic Oath she had once held sacred. Physical illnesses could be treated with skill, but mental ones weren't so straightforward. I tried to imagine the incident from Lydia's perspective: A patient, someone she arguably knew well, came to her for help, only to wail and curse at her. All the while, she would have wondered how he could so cruelly kill a child's beloved pigeon just to assert his fragile authority or how he could use a shovel to re-injure old wounds. And if she adhered strictly to her professional conduct, healing his scratched arm, she knew the same violence would return, only more viciously next time.
Lydia was never one to hide her feelings—whether it was joy, hope, anger, or disgust.
("Lydia told me my father's injury was complicated, which is why it kept coming back. He's been to so many clinics—more than I ever imagined. I thought doctor visits must have been painful for him, especially since Lydia always asked me to wait outside the room while I could hear his heaving and cursing.")
"It was during that time Father became much weaker, but never again did I... No, never mind. I meant that he gradually improved and finally recovered."
"Lydia is a good person. She understands other people's pain. I've always known that."
The treatment records confirmed that Mia's father recovered well. The series of slow, almost punitive treatments seemed to reflect Lydia's internal conflict, though it wasn't a complete deviation from her principles. Her uncontrollable passion quietly pushed her to the other side of the line, where it seemed she could have stayed for a while. Yet, she ultimately made the decision to return. For a long time, forces of "compulsion" and "hesitation" coexisted—until one night, Lydia crossed the line for good. It cost her dearly, forcing her to abandon the oath that had once been central to her identity. The "Dr. Jones" side of her had little left to gain from the routine cleaning and treatment plans, and I imagined that this method was uniquely hers—fickle, painful, like tree branches snapping in a gale.
But she didn't stop. She could never separate "Dr. Jones" from "Lydia."
Mia also shared that Lydia's family had visited the clinic on multiple occasions after the incident. She had recognized them from the photos and stories Lydia had shared. It was clear they were a decent family, one that set noble goals for their child and offered support and guidance. From this, I surmised that before leaving the ivory tower of medical school, Lydia's faith in the world was still innocent, and the part of her that went against conventional morals had yet to mature. That lack of maturity became one of her greatest sources of suffering later on.
In the few days that followed, Mia secretly brought me a series of letters that had been taken from the clinic before the incident. When she handed them over, I could still see the hopeful, biased expectation in her eyes. The letters had never been opened. Mia smiled and admitted that she couldn't read, but she thought they seemed important.
One of the contacts listed in the letters was a doctor I had heard of—a notorious figure known as the "doctor of death," who traveled from place to place, killing patients. This infamous criminal had graduated from the same school as Lydia Jones. This revelation told me that Lydia had once sought mental support from someone who could only be described as pure evil.
("There's one thing you and I have in common," the letter read, "a tendency to disregard conventional morals when prompted by some intense passion. Conventional morals act as an interval, after all. But people focus on the lower limit and ignore the upper limit, failing to realize that both paths ultimately stray from the norm. I'm confident that we are opposites in other ways. While I've always been on the outside of the line, you are the type who constantly questions your own situation without finding any real answers, as if the line itself is a cliff, one you fear falling off. This is simply a matter of belief: either you trust your morals, believing in undeniable righteousness and redemption, or you remain imprisoned by conventional standards."
"You'll never be happy. You and I are different because you can't stay the course: you're indecisive and stubborn. That's why you'll either tear yourself apart or die trying to hold everything in. And when you break, who do you think will be there to pick up the pieces?")
The correspondence ended with this letter. I can't say for sure if it was the turning point that pushed Lydia to make up her mind, but I'm certain that she continued to live in tremendous pain afterward.
Finally, I decided to ask Mia: You asked me to prove that Lydia Jones was innocent, but what if I told you she actually did the things she was accused of? The child fell silent for a moment. After much thought, she didn't respond.
I could see it in her eyes—or perhaps I had known for a long time—that I was no longer speaking to an uninhibited child. Driven by some naive motive, Mia had kept many facts from me—facts she had long accepted as truth.
But in the end, to her, and many others, Lydia Jones remained innocent.

Manor's Stormy Night "Surprise" Game
When I was a medical student, I undertook an internship at the municipal hospital during the holidays. Several of my peers I went there with were held in high regard for their talents and were soon assigned to assist in seeing the patients. I was the only one doing the work similar to that of a nurse on the ward. However, I had nothing to complain about. You see, I had become accustomed to such treatment.
One day after work, while I was getting dressed and thinking about what to have for dinner, I saw a little girl in a hospital gown squatting in the courtyard, unattended.
Concerned that she was perhaps lost, I hurried to her while pretending that I was just casually passing by. I didn't want to frighten her, you see.
"What are you doing out here so late?" I asked kindly.
"I'm picking flowers for my mother and father," she said in an innocent voice, "I want to bring them some flowers."
"Where are they?"
"Home," she answered, "I live here alone."
"How brave of you!" I sincerely complimented her, "Let me help you. After picking some flowers for them, I'll take you back to your room, okay?"
She shook her head but then nodded. She stood up and handed the flowers to me. It was a beautiful bouquet of red flowers that I hadn't seen in the courtyard before. "Can you give them to my parents for me?" She stood, looking up at me timidly with her grey eyes, and I noticed there were bruises on her arms left by injections. I took the flowers, led her to the corridor, and watched her slip back into her room.
The next day, when I went to visit her, the other patients told me that she had fallen into a coma the previous night, never to awaken. I gave the bouquet to her parents. They stared at the red flowers blankly, saying nothing. I don't know what exactly I encountered that night, but that's not important. If there are ghosts in this world, perhaps they are indeed nothing to fear. The only thing I am certain of is that love lives, even after death.
But then again, so does hatred.
Ten days later, the girl's parents were admitted to the hospital with an incurable infectious disease. Their bodies were bruised all over, and they died in agony.

Compiled Overview
Backstory
Emily Dyer, formerly known as Lydia Jones, lived a rather unstable life. Always moving around relocating, and she desired nothing more than a stable and secure life for herself and for others.[18] This desire is what got her interested in becoming a doctor; so she could provide a sense of security and comfort to her patients. Lydia attended medical school[19] and also adopted her personal philosophies towards the profession: "always practice on yourself so that you never harm a patient, the wellbeing of the patient is always a doctor's sole purpose, never give or provide guidance to harmful drugs (even with other requests from the patient)".[20]
Lydia went on to open the Lydia Jones Clinic with the goal of helping as many people as she could, while at the same time, volunteering at the White Sand Street Asylum.[21] While there, she performed several treatments she did not agree with, and she reported her concerns about the forms of treatment to Sister Lorraine, one of the people in charge of the asylum.[22] Although she did not agree with the treatment, she did administer electroshock therapy to the young Lisa Beck (Emma Woods).
As her clinic was run privately, it failed to turn any profit, and instead, she began to lose money.[23] Lydia felt her stability slipping, so in an impulsive effort to raise more money, Dr. Jones decided to put out an advertisement saying that the clinic provided "private" (in truth, illegal) medical services specially for female patients in 1888. On her business card, she states that she specializes in obstetrics and gynecology along with swearing herself to secrecy.[24] The money she would usually spend on treatments for common diseases (disinfectants, paralysants, asthma and malaria treatments) was used to instead purchase painkillers and anesthetics to carry out her surgeries and Lydia performed multiple successful abortion surgeries, earning a large sum of money, more than enough to cover the expenses lost from the previous year.[25] Lydia disposes of the evidence, as abortion is illegal, but the bags are ripped up by hungry dogs.[26] However, when she performed surgery on Martha Remington, Martha experienced excessive bleeding which Lydia could not stop. Upon realizing this, Lydia fled the clinic, due to the death of the mother and child. This death caused the oath Lydia had taken to be broken. The scene was discovered by officials, and Lydia Jones became a criminal wanted for murder. In order to avoid the law, she changed her name to Emily Dyer. "Emily Dyer" was then contacted by Baron DeRoss for a chance to "settle the past", and given an invitation to participate in the Manor Game.[27]
Events at the Manor
Emily arrived to the Manor on July 7th, 1899 as the last member of her game. Freddy Riley spoke to her in the entrance hall upon her arrival. He directed her to the dining hall to talk to Emma Woods.[28] Emily introduced herself as a doctor to Emma, but Emma questioned this due to her outfit. Emily replied that she was "technically" a doctor, despite what she was wearing. Emily left to look around, but returned to ask where her room was. Emma led her to her room, 1F02. While they were walking, Emily asked who Kreacher Pierson was and Emma insisted he was a "good guy" which Emily disagreed with and warned her about Kreacher.[29]
On July 9th, Emily decided to wait for Emma who she thought had gone to the garden. She spotted Kreacher in the dining hall and hid to keep an eye on him. Emma entered the dining hall, also avoiding Kreacher. Emily pretended not to see Emma and left her hiding spot so Emma would go to the garden. Emily then went to the garden and saw Emma hugging and speaking to the scarecrow. She asked Emma to introduce her to the scarecrow. Due to the environment of the Manor, Emily worried that she would not be able to treat Emma properly.[30]
On July 10th, Emily wrote that she was worried about Emma's mental state and expresses guilt that she had not been able to help her in the asylum as Lisa Beck. Emma ran into the dining hall and told her to come quickly as Kreacher had fallen off the balcony in the entrance hall. She got her medical kit and checked on Kreacher's injuries. After Emma and Kreacher left, Emily decided to investigate how he fell. She discovered that the handrail had been tampered with deliberately as it appeared to have been purposefully broken.[31] She had her suspicions that Emma may have set the trap and realized the danger she posed.[32]
On July 12th, Emma told Emily that the scarecrow moved and spoke to her. Emily was concerned and told Emma to take her to the garden. As they walked, Emma asked where Emily previously worked, which she answered that she had a private clinic and volunteered at an asylum. Emma continued to ask questions, the second one being what she did at the asylum. Emily told her that the asylum would sometimes demand her to treat patients in ways she didn't agree with. When they enter the garden, Emma asked why Emily came to the manor, which she replied that it was to fulfill a pledge of treatment she made to a young girl. Emily then inspected the scarecrow but it did not speak to her, heightening her concern for Emma's condition.[33]
That same day, Freddy overheard their conversation about Emily's past. Her answers supported his suspicions about her identity. He picked the lock to her room and discovers an old photo of her in front of a sign reading "Lydia Jones Clinic" that was tucked inside a book. This confirmed to him that Emily Dyer was Lydia Jones and he could finally take his revenge on her.[34] It appears that Emily knew Freddy had discovered her identity but she did not care, as she was more concerned with Emma's safety.[32]
On July 13th, the Manor Game began. Emily was determined to be victorious so she could keep her promise to the young girl she once knew in the asylum. Freddy approached her and asked to form an alliance; he would help her win the game and she would treat him first if he was injured. He told her to follow him to the factory and they investigated it together. Emily became suspicious from the name of the factory and the news report about Leo Beck. She asked Freddy what he thought the Manor owner's goal is for hosting this game to which he replied that he didn't know and it was perhaps just for fun. He then heard a strange sound and told Emily to look outside for the source of it. She was then attacked by Leo who leapt outside through the factory window, causing her to be eliminated.[35][MG 6] Freddy was also slaughtered by Leo, possibly before Emily's elimination since he was still inside the factory when Leo caught both of them.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions
- It is possible the "friend who somehow felt responsible" that Baron DeRoss mentioned in Doctor's 2021 letter is Freddy Riley. This is supported by the fact that Freddy put out a reward for locating Emily.[36] Baron DeRoss's wording in the letter implies that the friend wants to help Emily's situation, but he could be concealing Freddy's malicious intent for the sake of luring her to the manor. Also the mention of the friend wanting to "settle the past" relates to Freddy's wish for revenge.

Manor Game Table References
- ↑ The Diary segments for Emma Woods and Emily Dyer shows them accessing and exploring the Arms Factory. It is however implied that this version is actually a copy of the original Minerva Arms Factory. Freddy Riley mentions during Doctor's Diary segment that he believes Arms Factory to be a replica of the original Minerva Armory.
Alice DeRoss also mentions in Hell Ember's 6th Character Day Letter, Leo Beck: Investigation FieldNotes[sic] I, that: "When I arrived at the "Minerva Factory," once a beacon of hope but now defunct, I found it had long since been replaced by new shops."
This implies the original Minerva Arms Factory had long since been demolished and replaced with new buildings. - ↑ The Diary segments for Emma Woods and Emily Dyer show them access Arms Factory, beginning their Manor Game, on July 13th.
- ↑ As Emma Woods' age is listed as 22 years old in her Relations Menu, this can be assumed to be the age at which her Manor game took place. We can determine her birth date to be December 21st, 1876 due to the conclusion of Lawyer's 6th Deduction Quest, Troublemaker, mentioning: "A letter: Leo Beck and Martha Beck invite Freddy to attend Lisa's first birthday party on December 21st, 1877."
This implies that Lisa was born a year earlier, on the same date in 1876. This would place a 22 years old Emma involved in the Manor game that took place in July in the year 1899. - ↑ It should be noted that Hell Ember's serial number is different from those of other subjects in most of the Manor Games, possibly because it was assigned by B.A. and the other experiment staff at Sacred Heart Hospital rather than the usual authors of the other experiment files. It is further implied B.A. assigned Leo his serial number in Hell Ember's 3rd Character Day Letter, A case review file left behind in the Sacred Heart Hospital, where B.A: mentions: "Perhaps I shouldn't have named an experimental subject. After December 21, "Cinder" will simply be Subject No. 1-12-22-13."
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 Emily Dyer is shown being attacked by Hell Ember in her Diary segments, leading to her elimination.
Lawyer's 2023 Birthday Event questions mention that: "Question 5: "Whose elimination was closely linked to Freddy Riley?" ", with the correct answer being the option: "Emily Dyer" - ↑ 6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 6.4 Emma Woods appears to be the only survivor of the "Thistle Thorn" Manor game. She mentions in Gardener's 4th Birthday Letter, A Letter Attached with Dried Thistle and Without Recipient Information, that: "My new friends in this group warned me in secret to keep a record of everything, just in case my memories would start to deceive me."
This shows that Emma survived the experiment and fled Arms Factory, leading to her immediate inclusion into another test group which didn't include her past teammates.
Later in the same letter, she also mentions that: "Yes, I've won the previous round, for now [...]" - ↑ It's implied that Hell Ember spared Emma's life once he recognized her, despite the heavy behavioral drugs he was subjected to, and allowed her to escape the Arms Factory. Emma Woods mentions in Gardener's 4th Birthday Letter, A Letter Attached with Dried Thistle and Without Recipient Information, in regards to her interaction with Hell Ember: "Lisa, Lisa... I don't know why, but writing this name makes my eyes sting.
Maybe that weirdo knows me, but I'm unable to place him in any of my puzzle pieces."
An un unknown author mentions in Hell Ember's 4th Character Day Letter, Message Hidden Inside the Wooden Box Transported in Secret to Sacred Heart Hospital, that: "Subject 1-12-22-13's self-awareness broke free of the memory blockade at the end of the experiment, and Subject 1-12-22-13 regained some emotion as a result of Subject 4-1-1's provocation."
Alice DeRoss mentions in Hell Ember's 6th Character Day Letter, Leo Beck: Investigation FieldNotes[sic] I, in regards to the experimentation staff: "The reports highlight a particularly striking incident: all drug control measures failed to affect him." - ↑ 8.0 8.1 Kreacher Pierson is shown being burnt alive while inside of Mr. Skelkro by Emma Woods in her Diary segments, leading to his elimination.
An unknown author mentions in Thief's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Kreacher Pierson's Experiment File, that: "4-0-2 was the first subject to be eliminated from the game. He was immobilized by Subject 4-1-1's trap in the manor."
An unknown author mentions in Gardener's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Emma Woods' Experiment File, in regards to Kreacher Pierson that: "In contrast, during this process, Subject 4-1-1 persisted in her revenge plan against Subject 4-0-2. In the game, Subject 4-1-1 burned the scarecrow to symbolize her revenge." - ↑ An unknown author mentions in Lawyer's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Freddy Riley's Experiment File, in regards to Freddy Riley that: "[...] but this behavioral characteristic was limited to his exchanges with No. 4-0-4, making him less careful against the deadlier threat."
The wording implies that his careful attitude lessened once Emily Dyer had been eliminated, causing him to fall victim to Hell Ember.
