Worn Clothes are C-Tier costumes available to both Survivors and Hunters in Identity V. The costume can be unlocked for any character with Deduction Quests or Self-Analysis Quests by reaching and successfully completing the last quest. A few characters possess different Worn Clothes designs exclusive to the Chinese version of the game, although this variantion is purely aesthetic.
Every Worn Clothes costume can exclusively be obtained by completing character Deduction Quests and they all share the same description[1]. These characteristics have remained unchanged since the mechanic was first introduced, although the release schedules for individual characters' Worn Clothes have changed multiple times during the game's development, and several icons and models have been updated over time.
Worn Clothes costumes were first introduced during Late Beta, making them the oldest costumes in the game alongside Original.
Appearance[]
The character will appear in an alternate version of their Original design, with tattered and damaged clothes covered in stains and grime, and injuries on their limbs and face. Depending on the character in question, some unique elements can also be featured alongside the usual details, such as burns, scratch marks, blood or dirt.

Chinese Server[]
A few characters have alternate Worn Clothes models and icons exclusive to the Chinese Server. This only affects Hunters with some having their models changed to use different physical characteristics, such as masks and eye color, while others have their weapons replaced by a different design. The masks are also applied to the specific Hunter's C-Tier costumes alone, while the alternate weapons are used by all C and B-Tier costumes of the character.
While some of these alternate designs were added to the game with the character's introduction, much like alternate Original appearances, others were updated over time to replace their previous designs.

Development[]
Worn Clothes are some of the first costumes ever added to Identity V, introduced alongside Original and a few others during Late Beta and being planned already during the earliest stages of development. As such, they have gone through several changes during the game's development.
Bloody Clothes[]
Worn Clothes were first introduced to the game during the Second Beta Test, "The Seven Days That Disappeared," on October 20th, 2017. When first added, they were referred to as "Bloody Clothes" and their designs featured many bloody stains, scratches and wounds alongside the usual grime on a character's skin and attire. This was reflected in the icons used for them during the Fourth Beta Test which displayed bloody variants of the artworks later used for Worn Clothes.
Between the Second and Fourth tests Bloody Clothes and Original costumes lacked a dedicated icon altogether, using instead the character select icon. When first introduced, an unlockable Bloody Clothes costume was available for all the Survivors and Hunters in the game and were obtained by reaching and completing the last Deduction Quest for the character in question.
Curiously, with the beginning of the Fourth Beta Test most of these Bloody Clothes would be removed from the game, remaining only available for Hell Ember, Gardener, Doctor, Thief and Lawyer. It's important to note that most of the characters' Deductions during the Second Test were very brief, with a handful of quests available and short conclusions attached, which may have led the development team to postpone their obtainment until more complete backstories could be introduced, although an official reason was never granted. Mechanic's Beta design, still in use at the time of the Second Test, had its own obtainable Bloody Clothes costume as well, which later went completely unused once her base design was replaced in later tests.

Design Inspiration[]
As with several other elements introduced during the game's Beta period, Bloody Clothes were functionally and visually inspired by elements found within Dead by Daylight, in this case the blood-stained cosmetic items obtained as Prestige Rewards. The latter serve a similar purpose, appearing as bloodied and damaged versions of a character's base design unlocked through gameplay. The notable difference is that Identity V's Bloody Clothes were, much like the current Worn Clothes, tied to a character's story progression through Deduction Quests, which included specific gameplay requirements in order to unlock information. This isn't the case for Prestige Rewards, which are tied exclusively to gameplay-related progression by accumulating and spending points.
Worn Clothes during Beta[]
With the end of the Fourth Beta Test and the beginning of the Fifth Test, Bloody Clothes were replaced by "Worn Clothes." The models in use remained the same, but the blood stains and wounds were substituted by dirt and grime. The icons were also updated to replace the blood. They were obtainable in the same way as before, and only the five characters who retained Bloody Clothes during the Fourth Test were able to unlock Worn Clothes for the remainder of the testing period.
The updated icons and models would remain in use until the end of Chinese Season 1, when new icons were adopted and have remained in use since. The characters who previously possessed Bloody Clothes during the Second Beta Test would not receive their corresponding unlockable Worn Clothes costume until after the game's official release.
Unused Features[]
Level System[]
Although first introduced in a publicly playable version of Identity V during the Second Test, Bloody Clothes seem to have been conceived of since the first stages of Early Beta development. Several unused "Bloody Clothes" models are present both in official concept artworks and game files of beta builds for scrapped early Survivors and Hunters, that date to a phase where the game was planned to have modern tones and character designs, such as Stranger 1 and Graveyard Girl. This indicated that unlockable variants of characters' base designs were already considered very early on, although further details are unknown.
However, it's implied by surviving material dating back to the Early Beta period that a "Bloody Clothes Level System" was partially implemented, but ultimately went unused. This system included four separate designs for a character's appearance: their Original appearance, a first Bloody design with minor damage, a second Bloody design serving as an intermediate, and a final third Bloody design with a substantial amount of damage and blood. Specifically, design notes related to the system focused on three aspects to be altered between each variant:
- Color brightness, which should decrease for the overall design as the level increases.
- Overlay of stains, differentiated between blood and dirt, which increase in number and area the higher the level.
- Clothes' pattern, which appear more damaged and deviate more from the Original design as the level increases.
It's currently unknown how each Bloody Clothes variant was meant to be unlocked, or if it was meant to function similarly to the current Deduction Quests system at all. From their introduction until their replacement by Worn Clothes, Bloody Clothes only ever consisted of one usable model in every version they were availabel on. It's also unknown when plans for the system were dropped, however it seems to have been at the very least kept in consideration for an extended amount of time, as even characters that were added only during Late Beta such as Doctor and Mechanic have unused "variants" found in the game files. The four levels are even featured on one of Priestess' concept artworks, a character released only after the game's official launch and total departure from the bloody and violent designs that characterized the beta period.
Costume Worn Clothes[]
Curiously, several unused textures and models of "Bloody Clothes" variants of Hunter and Survivor costumes could be found in the files of beta builds of Identity V. Specifically, bloody textures are present for costumes such as Blue Aladdin, Cowgirl, Researcher and Painter among others, and unique models are present for some of Hell Ember's costumes such as Welder and Silence. It's unknown what purpose these alternate models and textures were planned to serve, as they were never used in any publicly available test. It seems however that this system was in consideration at the very least up until the Fifth Beta Test in early February 2018, seeing the existence of bloody versions of cosmetics that made their debut then.
Although purely speculative, it's plausible that at some point a character's "Bloody Clothes" could have been intended to be overlaid onto their cosmetic items, once unlocked. It's also plausible that bloody versions of each costume were intended to be obtained separately.
While Bloody Clothes variants of Hell Ember's Mr. Puppet, Perception and Moon Face are also present in the files, these likely date further back than the above mentioned cut variants. These three costumes were originally intended to be independent Hunters during Early Beta and as such, their Bloody Clothes were likely added separately as the respective character's unlockable bloody variant. Multiple Bloody models are even present for the individual costumes with slight variations between them, likely remnants of the scrapped Level System also originally conceived during early testing.
After Official Release[]
Worn Clothes and the mechanics behind their obtainment have remained mostly unchanged since the game's official release in April 2018. For several years, Deduction Quests were made available only periodically with the beginning for a new Season, meaning newly released characters would have to wait months before obtaining their unlockable Worn Clothes. This schedule was changed in Season 16 so that every new character will release with Deduction Quests already available or, rarely, added shortly after release. Batter and "Undead" were the last characters to receive their Worn Clothes based on the old schedule.
When the Alternate Identities System was first introduced, characters that constituted Identity Switches, which at the time included Professor, Weeping Clown, "Nightmare", "Fool's Gold" and Journalist, did not possess Deduction Quests. Lucky Guy, Novelist and "Little Girl" also had no available Deduction system since release. As a consequence, these characters had no Worn Clothes costumes available. This was changed on December 7th, 2023 when Deduction Quests were added for a few of them, and the newly introduced Self-Analysis System granted the others their own separate quests and unlockable costume. This made it so every playable character in the game finally had their own unlockable Worn Clothes costume.
Trivia[]
- Some characters' Worn Clothes models were updated after their initial release, changing some of their details.
- Gardener's model was changed to feature both gloves and less attire damage somewhere between November 2018 and April 2021[2]. Her Worn Clothes icon still makes use of the original version. This previous design was in the past, and occasionally still is, used in official material[3][4][5], although notably without stains on its surface.
- When first added in December 2023, Lucky Guy's Worn Clothes model appeared noticeably darker in color. This was changed shortly after its debut to its current shade.
- In the Chinese version of the game, Soul Weaver's Worn Clothes model was updated in Season 13 to replace her original brown plague doctor mask, still in use in Global Servers, with a white one sporting a longer beak. This change was also applied to her Original and C-Tier costumes, as part of a wider update to several cosmetics in the Chinese Server.
- "Nightmare"'s unreleased Worn Clothes model was mistakenly made visible in the Appearance Decoration Menu after maintenance on August 17th, 2023, before its official introduction later in the year. This was fixed on August 18th, when the costume was hidden again.
- On PC the model was bugged, causing the worn clothes texture overlay to display incorrectly.
- For unknown reasons, Magician's Worn Clothes' texture overlay on the body is less visible on high graphics compared to seeing him in low or performance graphics, possibly an oversight on the part of the developers.
- Lucky Guy holds the record of longest gap between his character release and the addition of an unlockable Worn Clothes costume, spanning well over five years.
- Curiously, concept artworks for the character show that his Bloody Clothes, later Worn Clothes, designs were already conceived of during Early Beta and simply remained unreleased.
