Character Relations Menu[]
First Officer Jose Baden was once famous. Jose Baden and his father, a captain, once protected England's naval empire. They were wealthy, brave, formidable, and absolutely punctual. It didn't matter if they were tasked with protecting the ships of England or transporting the Queen's treasures, the Baden family was never late. Rumors say it was all thanks to Baden's pocket watch, supposedly blessed by Poseidon, commanding the tide and waves to always obey him and never stand in his path. The Queen of England thought highly of them because of that, and she rewarded them for it.
But one day, Baden was delayed in Liverpool and couldn't go out to sea with his father. At sunset, he waited at the harbor for his father, but that vessel under the Queen's command never returned on time. In fact, both the ship and its crew were never seen again. The Queen was furious and thought the Badens had stolen her treasure, so she stripped Jose Baden of his wealth and title. Jose Baden was left with nothing.
Not long after, Jose received word that an item on the lost ship's manifest, an antique umbrella from China, had been seen in a place called Oletus Manor.
The former knight of the sea decided to set foot on this cursed land and search for his father. Or at least... take back what belonged to him.

Once upon a time, there wasn’t a single man that didn’t know Jose Baden, the First Officer. His father, the captain, and him were protectors and escorts for the British crown’s maritime empire. They were wealthy, heroic, gallant, and very punctual. Whether shielding English ships, or transporting royal treasures, the Baden family were never late. Rumor has it that this was because Baden had obtained a pocket watch blessed by the God of the Sea. The tide and great waves alike would heed his call, never delaying his ships. Thus, they enjoyed the Queen’s favor in no small measure, receiving titles despite being foreigners.
But one day, Baden, who had been delayed by matters in Liverpool, did not set out to sea with his father. At sunset he awaited his father at the port, but the ship that so loyally served the crown did not return on time. In fact, the ship, as well as all its crew, never reappeared upon the sea. The Queen was enraged. Believing that the Badens had stolen her treasure, she stripped Jose Baden of his family’s riches and title. Jose Baden had fallen.
Not long after, Jose received some information. On the list of goods upon that missing ship was a certain antique Chinese umbrella, and now it had appeared in a place called Oletus Manor.
Once a knight of the sea, he decided to set foot on this cursed land himself; to find his father, or at the very least…… to take back what is rightfully his.[8][9]
Official News Backstory[]
Being a First Officer, Jose Baden’s relationship with his father, the captain, was always one of tacit understanding. With the captain’s rich seafaring experience and the mysterious power of the First Officer’s pocket watch, their merchant ship was undefeatable. Even the Queen trusted them to work for her.
One day, due to some business, Baden was unable to set sail. When the agreed return date arrived, the merchant ship was gone without a trace, and all its crew and treasures vanished into thin air, never to be seen again. The Queen, trembling with rage, stripped the Badens of their wealth and titles. In just one night, the First Officer lauded as a knight upon the sea had fallen; he was now nothing more than a widely detested, down-and-out thief.
After that, Baden heard tell of a priceless antique Chinese umbrella, one of the treasures on the ship, turning up at Oletus Manor. People said that Manor was filled with evil and terror, but how could the magnificent First Officer Jose Baden be scared of a simple legend? He gave the pocket watch at his breast a squeeze, and felt in that moment filled with power. Perhaps the chance to find his family’s wealth and honor lay right in the Manor![10][9]
Character Trailer[]
It felt like Sunset came late that day.
I waited, but my father's ship and its cargo did not return.
The Queen was furious.
She thought father had stolen her antique treasures,
and ordered the Baden family be stripped of wealth and title.
The once reputable maritime Baden family had fallen.
Until I heard a rumor:
An antique Chinese umbrella from the vanished ship
had turned up at a place called Oletus Manor.
I must set foot upon this cursed land,
find my father, and retrieve our honor.
Sunset was really late that day, the antique carrying ship that father directed never returned.
The Queen was furious, she thought father stole her treasure
and commanded to deprive Baden's wealth and title
The once royal navy has fallen
Till I heard a message
A Chinese antique umbrella that was once part of the missing ship
has appeared in a place called the Oletus Manor
I have to step foot onto this cursed land
To find my father, and retrieve our honor.Deduction Quests[]

A sailing log (2020)[]
September 24, Cloudy
As Viscount Baden didn't make it to boarding, I'll be taking his place on this journey to take Parthenope's voyage log.
The destination of this voyage isn't a port on the previous trade route, but a set of coordinates at the northeast corner of the Mediterranean. As we're headed into uncharted territory, in addition to the daily necessities for the voyage, the ship is loaded with powerful guns and cannons instead of other cargo to play it safe. I hope we won't have to use them.
Long live the King
...
A line of distorted handwriting: The cannons couldn't kill them...
The Last Page of the Diary (2021)[]
Our dear young master made a new discovery today.
The beacon which will lead us to victory lies within each of the invitation we received—the codewords belonging to each of us.
As for my codeword, it is... "Boat."
This discovery reminds me of a small detail from the past, one I have ignored for quite some time—the peculiar fashion in which the first letter of that codeword is written.
It differs somewhat from that handwritten note appeared in the lobby some days ago... Perhaps I should be more cautious of this "coincidence"?
Regardless of the sender's motives, I cannot worry myself over things outside my control. It serves me no purpose for the time being.
However, this is not the first time I have seen this handwriting. It appeared as a signature on my father's ledger of goods once before.
That signature belonged to a person by the name of "Bourbon"...[13]

[Test Indicators]
1. Illusion
2. Cognitive Battle
3. Self-judgment
[Inclination]
The "savior" of self-salvation
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation:
When a deviation in his self-perception threatens survival, for defensive purposes, the subject would offer a set of solutions to balance his perception and convince himself to believe in it, no matter the truth.
2. Methodology
Subject 5-0-3 studied hypnosis in the past. This gave him a short-lived head start at the beginning of the experiment. He subjectively divided the subjects of the entire of experiment into camps and found the strongest allies for the time being. However, Subject 5-0-3 was unaware of this. Subject 5-?-1 and Subject 5-0-2 took advantage of this and fooled Subject 5-0-3.
The unexpected sacrifice of Subject 5-?-4 led to a crack in Subject 5-0-3's wavering sense of good and evil. Subject 5-?-1 and Subject 5-0-2 took the chance to name Subject 5-0-3 as the sole culprit, which triggered Subject 5-0-3's most painful breakdown memories. He descended into self-judgment, which almost caused a self breakdown and led to his early exit.
3. Analysis Summary:
As a "gift" from a friend who passed away, I treasured the opportunity to use Subject 5-0-3 in the experiment. Therefore, when the executioner who monitored the subjects came to the conclusion that his mental state was deteriorating, I was prepared to put an end to the experiment on him for the time being.
However, whoever conducted deep hypnosis on him obviously buried a spiritual anchor for him. This acted as a mental defense for him when he could no longer threaten the other subjects and became totally vulnerable. As a result, he finally went through all the experimental processes prepared for him, completed self-hypnosis again with the energy of 5-0-3-U, and was exempted from self-judgment.
From the results of the experiment, it is still unclear whether drug or mind control is more dominant in cognitive manipulation. Perhaps I should wait more patiently for the "gift" from my even more generous friend.
A Soaked Page from a Diary (2023)[]
I woke up with another splitting headache this morning. However, the discomfort was alleviated once I located the umbrella in the greenhouse.
It is no longer a hallucination under the influence of drugs and alcohol. After countless failures and crushed dreams, it truly lies before me for the very first time. The swaying pocket watch is finally back where it started.
"You can take everything you find there."
At least this time, the voice in my head isn't just full of lies.
During breakfast, I planned to say farewell to my temporary "crew," even that "understanding" lady and "amiable" young master. After all, as those who protect a common secret, we will probably never meet again.
But they left before dawn. Perhaps they made the right decision. The unexpected storm that arrived after breakfast delayed my departure.
But unlike the storms of the past that were always accompanied by misfortune, this time, I finally saw the semaphore of home after the heavy rain.
A Message (2024)[]
Since the ordeal known as the "shipwreck," Jose Baden's life has transformed into a series of perilous voyages through dreamland. While skills and bravery may help him navigate these dangers, to reach his destination, he must awaken the dormant pirate within him to correct the sea chart in his memory, distorted long ago.
Jose Baden: Investigation Field Notes I (2025)[]
Even though the Baden family's fleet has long since vanished, the moment I stepped onto the docks and spoke the name Jose Baden, I found no shortage of men who remembered him. Not as the broken figure steeped in regret described in the archives, but—at least in the telling of certain sailors—as the spirited, sea-blessed first officer he once was.
Most of these men had sailed under the Badens in their prime, and their recollections cast Jose as a legend of the waves—a man of rare gifts, favored by wind and tide. Others, however, spoke of him with scorn: an irredeemable drunkard who had dragged his family's honor into the depths. In their eyes, the King's charge of "gross misconduct" was not confined to some dry entry in the inquest—it was proof enough that the Baden fleet's ruin, and Jose's absence from that fateful voyage, lay squarely on his shoulders.
Fragments of regret and ridicule alike seemed always to circle back to the same point: the final voyage that consigned the Baden name to the deep. By all accounts, it was this disaster that diverted Jose Baden from the course he had charted for himself. And so I set out for Liverpool, the last port where the fleet had anchored, in search of any trace that might yet speak of the man.
......
Jose Baden
The cause of the Baden fleet's loss remains a matter of dispute. Some say they were caught by a sudden gale, blown from their course, and lost to the open sea. Others claim they encountered a rogue wave—one of those mountainous walls of water that rise without warning and can smash a vessel to splinters in an instant. There are even whispers that the Badens rekindled some old ambition, absconding with treasure owed to the Crown to live in secret comfort—leaving Jose behind as a convenient scapegoat.
Whatever the truth, it is plain that Jose himself would have preferred to sail with his crew that day. He believed—perhaps because he needed to—that had he been aboard, he could have navigated them to safety, no matter the peril. And if no course to hope remained, then at least he would have shared their grave beneath the waves.
Such thoughts left him with only one conclusion: self-blame. He had stayed ashore, and so he lived—escaping purely by drunken chance, and thus, in his own eyes, becoming the very spark that ignited his family's downfall.
The King's judgment may have ended with a cold decree on paper, but Jose's punishment had scarcely begun. For a long while, he made his home in a dockside tavern—a place the proprietor tells me he had already been frequenting before disaster struck.
In those days, Jose was something of a particular patron—careless in tossing down gold, but quick to chide the proprietor that the wine list never changed. Threats to throw him out were met, the very next day, with his return in the company of newcomers to whom he would extol the tavern's "unmissable" vintage.
The proprietor shrugged as he told me, "If Jose hadn't once brought me customers, I would never have kept a man who looked set to drink himself to death—no matter what he paid."
"Kept?" I prompted.
"Aye—we kept him, and he kept coming." With a stained rag in hand, he pointed to a shadowed corner. "See that seat? That was his. The leather's worn half-smooth from the years he spent in it. I'd wager it all happened during that time."
"Did he only drink here?" I asked.
"Not only that," came the reply. "He was waiting. You know the sort—those who, after word of a wreck, cannot accept it, haunting the harbor day and night for a ship that will never return. Jose was no different.
My tavern's close to the docks, and he knew any crew putting in might come here. Every time a fresh face crossed the threshold—especially a man just ashore—he'd be over at once, asking if they'd run the Mediterranean routes... whether they'd seen a certain vessel... or even some scrap of wreckage with her crest."
I remembered the reports: nothing at all had been recovered from the wreck of the Parthenope. Not a spar, not a splinter of her timbers. One rumor told of a wealthy treasure-hunter who dispatched a crew to seek antiques said to have gone down with her—but, like the vessel herself, they vanished without a trace.
"Did he ever get an answer that satisfied him?" I asked.
"Of course not," the proprietor said, shaking his head. "Just headshakes and looks of pity—or contempt. No word, no wreckage, no miracle. The sea that swallowed his kin and his honor left him nothing."
For a time, Jose entertained the idea of assembling his own crew to retrace the fatal voyage. He even produced a chart said to be a faithful copy of the old route. But he had neither the purse nor the reputation to persuade anyone to follow him into waters both perilous and ill-omened.
"One day, he simply didn't come in. Nor the next. By the time I thought to ask after him, no one had seen him. The rascal left without so much as a goodbye!"
"Some said he'd drunk himself to death in a ditch; others, that he'd finally poured himself into the sea and gone to join his crew. Who can say?" The proprietor's shrug was theatrical, but his eyes narrowed. "I never believed it—because I saw him, that last night... the real him."
"The real him?"
The man drew a deep breath. It was a night of storm—the tavern empty but for Jose, hunched in his corner, and the proprietor behind the bar, nodding with drowsiness.
Jose had drunk heavily, yet called for no more, nor idly toyed with the pocket-watch he always carried. He lay folded over the table, face buried in his arms—until, as if in a dream, he murmured: They're calling me... we sail at dawn! Then, abruptly, he rose and reeled for the door. Fearful of what might come, the proprietor followed.
Outside, the wind and rain swallowed all other sound. Jose staggered toward the sea, and within that battered figure, the proprietor glimpsed a strange, almost feverish light: a longing so fierce it bordered on joy, as if he meant for the raging waters to scour away every sin.
The proprietor began to shout—but Jose stopped.
He stood there under the hammering rain for a long while, long enough that his pursuer nearly went to drag him back. Then, very deliberately, Jose drew from his coat a short sailor's knife—a common seaman's tool for cutting lines or bait, equally fit for settling quarrels... or ending one's own life.
"I'd never seen him carry a blade before," the proprietor said quietly. "He stared at it for a long while... and then, with one motion, flung it into the sea."
The man broke off, shaking his head. "It's hard to describe his eyes just then. But I'll say this: anyone who looked like that wasn't about to throw his life away in some nameless gutter."
"Did anyone visit him before he vanished? Or did he go to see anyone?" I asked.
"If he met anyone, it was elsewhere. Here, he did little but drink and talk to his watch. I just hope he didn't take it into his head to go looking for his old 'acquaintances.'"
"You mean... pirates?"
"Aye. They wouldn't show themselves here, but a man at sea hears things. If Jose went to that lot for answers—and kept it quiet—others might assume the Badens had indeed stolen the antiques bound for the Crown, and that he meant to rejoin them in comfort."
"And did such rumors arise?"
"No," came the answer after a pause. "No rumors at all—alive or dead."
With that, the proprietor turned to his work, scrubbing at the bar as though to scour away the memory. The empty tavern fell silent, save for the muffled break of waves against the quay. In the shadows, the leather of Jose's old seat gleamed faintly in the gloom.
It seemed to me the man behind the counter bore a private sympathy for Baden; perhaps, had Jose truly turned pirate, he would still have found a cup waiting here. But his concern was real enough: Baden's disappearance came without farewell, and from that day forward, no whisper of him was heard in Liverpool.
Later, the archives confirmed what I had guessed—Baden still carried his family's honor in his heart. He had not returned to piracy, but set out in another fashion to trace his father's steps, walking toward a different kind of storm—one that lay not upon the sea, but ashore.
This time, courage and seamanship alike would be of no avail.
Before leaving the port, I turned once more toward the sea. The horizon lay shrouded in a heavy mist; apart from the dim outlines of moored vessels, the distance was nothing but vague, shifting shapes—ships, perhaps, or phantoms.
Had Jose himself stood thus, watching, eyes fixed upon the grey, for a ship that could never again push through the fog to make this harbor?

Character Relations Background[]
In June, 2022, an unreleased Character Relations background story for First Officer was found in the game files. This backstory was changed slightly before its official release with the Character Relations Menu update on August 8th, 2024. The following is the previous wording.
| Jose Baden, the First Officer, was once known throughout England. Jose Baden and his father, a captain, once protected England's naval empire. They were wealthy, brave, formidable, and absolutely punctual. It didn't matter if they were tasked with protecting the ships of England or transporting the Queen's treasures—the Baden family was never late. Rumors say it was the result of Baden's pocket watch that was blessed by Poseidon, so the tide and waves obeyed him and never stood in his path. The Queen of England thought highly of them because of that, and the Queen rewarded them for it. But one day, Baden was delayed in Liverpool and couldn't go out to sea with his father. He waited at the harbor for his father at sunset, but that vessel under the Queen's command never returned on time. In fact, both the ship and its crew were never seen again. The Queen was furious and thought the Badens had stolen her treasure, so she stripped Jose Baden of his wealth and title. Jose Baden was left with nothing. Not long after, Jose recieved word that an item on the lost ship's manifest, an antique parasol from China, had been seen in a place called Oletus Manor. The former knight of the sea decided to step foot on this cursed land and search for his father. Or at least... take back what's rightfully his. |

Compiled Overview[]
Background[]
The Badens were a famous noble family that served the royal family at sea, and were well-known for being extremely competent at sea, whether successfully protecting naval vessels or transporting valuable cargo. They seemed to have an uncanny way of navigating the sea that allowed them to always be punctual, due to their special pocket watch "blessed by the God of the Sea." This allowed them to obtain a great amount of favor from the Royal family.
One night, the son of the captain, Jose Baden, missed a voyage on the ship as he was unable to be woken up after drinking a lot of alcohol on land. He waited at the dock for his father, however, the ship never returned. As it had been carrying precious cargo belonging to the royal family, it was assumed his father had deserted the navy with the treasure and the entire family had their title stripped from them and were disgraced.
In order to regain his family's honor, Jose began searching for the missing ship and its "stolen" cargo. Some time later, he found a clue that an antique Chinese umbrella that had been part of the missing treasure had been found at the Oletus Manor, and he went to the manor to see if this was true.
Events at the Manor[]
Jose participated in Group 5's Manor Game along with Edgar Valden, "Vera Nair", Kevin Ayuso, Patricia Dorval, an unknown Executioner, and a special experimental item, which is an umbrella contains the souls of Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu. For their manor game, it seems each participant went by a "codename" and the First Officer went by the codename "Boat."[18] Although, Jose was only chosen as a test subject for Lakeside Villge due to his background in studying hypnosis.[19] The Manor saw Jose who could either dominate the experiment or be broken by it.
Early in the Manor Game, Jose divided other participants into camps and alliances to maintain a position of strategic influence. At some point, Jose recognized the handwriting of the letters as belonging to someone named Bourbon with Edgar’s help.[18] Meanwhile, Vera allied temporarily with Jose to put Patricia at a disadvantage. However, Vera did not follow through on Jose’s manipulation.[20]
When the manor served strange medicines, Jose and his crewmates cooperated on pressuring Patricia to drink the poison, but Kevin ended up sacrificing himself for drinking it in order to protect her.[21] After Kevin’s escape in the First Stage, Vera and Edgar turned on Jose, falsely labeling him as the culprit behind Kevin’s guilt. This lead to Jose descent into self-judgment for reminding him of his past, the executioner noted that he was near at a mental breakdown and considered ending his trial.[22] Additionally, Jose became one of the participants cursed by Patricia.[23]
During this, Jose was lured to a designated point in Lakeside Village containing a "gift" from a friend and found the missing item from his family’s wares. The environment and the presence of the item caused Jose to hallucinate upon perceiving a hidden watermark.[19] At first, Jose entered a state of confusion but then his emotions stabilized. The Chinese umbrella seemed to act as a spiritual anchor, restoring part of Jose’s fractured mind. As Jose’s mind improved significantly, he then sought out to find Vera. It is unknown what happened to Vera once Jose found her.[19]
In the next morning, Jose planned to find the umbrella relocated inside the greenhouse after breakfast and bid his "crew" a farewell. Unlike the storms of Jose’s past that were always accompanied by misfortune, he finally saw the semaphore of home after the heavy rain.[24]
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- It seems likely that the antique umbrella that was part of the cargo from his missing father's ship is the same umbrella Wu Chang uses.
- From the deductions, it seems Jose was their main Navigator for the ship, as the deductions state that he often "made corrections" to their routes, and his father says that Jose just needs "to get us out of every sandbank and reef."[25]
- Additionally, Jose would frequently have panic attacks and was unable to sleep unless he had drunk a lot of alcohol. This may have caused him to become an alcoholic, and so miss the important voyage his father went missing on.[26] This is confirmed to be true in his 2022 Birthday questions.

Manor Game Table References[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Wu Chang's 2022 Letter confirms the location as Lakeside Village.
- ↑ First Officer's 2022 Letter implies that an Executioner was present in this Manor Game, monitoring Jose’s mental state specifically. However, this direct confirmation remains unclear.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 See Enchantress's 2022 Letter.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 In Painter's 2024 Letter, it is stated that Edgar was willing to let himself be sacrificed by Patricia and mentions his "swan song".
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 5.2 In First Officer's 2023 Letter seemingly implies that Edgar, Vera, and Jose finished their Manor Game. But as Edgar is implied to be dead from his 2024 Letter those were likely Jose's delusions.
- ↑ 6.0 6.1 In Wu Chang's 2022 Letter, it appears First Officer was affected by the umbrella in some way, however it is currently unknown what happened as a result.
- ↑ It should be noted Wu Chang's serial number is referring to their umbrella.
- ↑ Based on the current information given by Wu Chang's 2022 Letter, it is known that the Manor used the power of Wu Chang's umbrella to affect on First Officer in some way, rather than using the duo as a hunter in the Game.
- ↑ Enchantress's 2023 Birthday Questions state that Cowboy was the only one spared by Enchantress but it is unknown what she spared him from but it is possible that Kevin was spared from the death of poison he had drank to protect her.
- ↑ Cowboy's 2022 and 2023 Letters heavily imply that Kevin had already escaped the Manor before the Manor Game began.
- ↑ Perfumer's 2022 Letter uses 5-0-5 while other letters use 5-?-5.
