An Invitation for William Ellis (2020)[]
Dear Mr. William Ellis,
People often discuss how you have an "unfair advantage" in Rugby. Contrary to what they've blabbered about, I see your "advantage" as an "extraordinary reform" to the sport. You've embedded sophistication under that muscular body of yours and successfully fooled everyone that you're merely a brute charging headlessly with a rugby ball.
Your talent in exploiting the loophole within the rules has revolutionized the sport. For this, we welcome you to participate in this new game we have created. Your role in this operation is to polish the game rule, for the game requires a person with your physique and mind. Your participation in this treasure hunting game of ours at the Oletus Manor is crucial.
Well, of course, as a token of our appreciation, we will fully support you, with no strings attached, in your future reform at the Rugby club.
We look forward to your presence,
The Host
Forward's Diary (2021)[]
November 2[TN 1]
It's snowing up a storm outside!
I received word this morning that the game will, unfortunately, be postponed due to the weather. We've been told we have to stay indoors and will be punished if we go outside... Damn their threats of punishment! Now it's not just a curfew, we're not even free to walk around outside during the day!
I really can't bear to stay in this house! With those three around, the environment here is worse than the freezing weather outside! This morning, I bumped into that guy Murro in the kitchen again. He looked at me and brought his breakfast back to his room without saying a word! Hmm... I don't know why he's so twitchy. Maybe he just doesn't like me?
I remember that when I first arrived yesterday morning, there were only two people in the house, Murro and me. He seemed to be very familiar with the place, showing me where my room was, and then he just left without so much as a good bye... William Ellis, why are you cursed to always be treated like this?
When will the game begin? I miss the pitch, the win, seared meat fresh off the grill... As soon as I win the prize, I'll get the guys on the team to throw a party! Damn it... I just want to get my hands on the money and get the hell out of this godforsaken place!

Serial No. 9-?-2
Name: William Ellis
[Test Indicators]
1. Naive
2. Impulsive
3. Unguarded
[Inclination]
A fool who falls for traps
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation
No. 9-?-2's social experience was comparatively lesser when compared to the other subjects in the same group. Due to the simple environment he grew up in, his naivety made him rarely get swept into conflicts. But like a sheep fallen into a tiger's mouth, simple-minded people always become the stepping stones of others in competitions.
2. Methodology
During the experiment, No. 9-?-2 was unguarded against other subjects without any direct conflict against him. He didn't reject No. 9-?-1's advances and easily became trustful of No. 9-?-3 who had lent him a helping hand.
The only difference was his attitude towards No. 9-?-4. No. 9-?-2 was very vigilant towards No. 9-?-4 as he had witnessed No. 9-?-4 killing a teacher. This led him to make No. 9-?-4 the first subject when he was poisoned, and with the other subjects deliberately guiding him toward this conclusion, he rashly interpreted an accident as intentional and became hostile toward No. 9-?-4. No. 9-?-2 may not have been the actual culprit, but he indirectly created the conflict.
3. Analysis Summary
Spending most of his life in a school made No. 9-?-2 naive and easily accept others as companions upon having gotten on with them for some time. When things got tense, he still warmly invited No. 9-?-3 to have roast pork with him. He isn't good at scheming against people, and he easily believes those he considers to be "good." In order to gain the approval of his teammates, he shared his information without any reservation and was eager to prove himself.
No. 9-?-3 took advantage of that to justifiably eliminate anyone who stood in the way. No. 9-?-2 was lucky because No. 9-?-3, the most dangerous of all the subjects, considered that he was of no threat. In the end, No. 9-?-2 remained ignorant to the fact that he'd been used as the blade to kill. However, even if he was ignorant, those who broke the rules were still punished. His foolishness gave him a chance to survive, but it was also predetermined his end. In the trial of human nature, his rashness and recklessness were his crimes...
An Unsent Letter (2023)[]
Dear Sir,
I'm willing to be your arrow, but I still have doubts about your plan.
You punish the cruel criminals, judge the greedy hypocrites, and expose the pompous dreamers. But why do you involve the insignificant fool and watch as his hope grows and crumbles, over and over again?
After he witnessed the execution, the man attempted to hide in the forest, but Burke and I spent a day finding him and bringing him back.
When he looked at me, the fear in his eyes was like that of a wild beast gazing into the barrel of a hunting rifle. I was surprised to find out that humans who are so used to slaughter would actually have such a strong survival instinct.
We locked him in the processing room. He struggled without end and sought answers about his companion's whereabouts. Yet even until the moment before he fell unconscious, he still failed to realize that it was that very companion who had caused this.
Foolish trust leads to dashed hopes. Perhaps this is the ending you planned?
Or perhaps the foolish who are not linked to sin will be a part of future experiments?
Please excuse my curiosity, and please tell us how to deal with this tenacious test subject.
Your loyal servant,
Bane Perez
A Message (2024)[]
William Ellis' dream is simple and straightforward: to return to the field and stand once more on the podium of glory. However, his innocence is ill-suited for the harsh realities, and fate seldom favors the ignorant. Little did he know that the poison of "trust" was the reason for his downfall.
William Ellis: Investigation Field Notes I (2025)[]
Victory and glory are the lifelong pursuits of every athlete, yet for William Ellis, such fervent longing had long since become a shackle upon his soul—a radiant chain in moments of triumph, but one that, when faded, gnawed raw at the spirit. In the eyes of the public, he was ever the raging bull, charging forth with reckless abandon, scattering all who dared stand in his path, as though the very world revolved around that modest playing field. Yet, when the weight of reality drowned out the cheers of the crowd, his life, like those old, yellowing photographs, gradually lost its luster, fading into the relentless current of time.
William Ellis
The first I heard of William Ellis was upon the playing fields of Rugby School. At the time, an exhilarating interscholastic rugby match was underway, the cheers of the spectators rising and falling like the tide. I, then a fledgling reporter for the local paper, was present to chronicle the event's grandeur.
"Quite the match, Mr. Smith," I remarked after the final whistle. Mr. Smith, the school counselor, had just presented the trophy to the victors and graciously agreed to my request for an interview. "How do you view today's match?"
"Sport exists to strengthen the body and temper the mind," Mr. Smith replied, his words measured and deliberate. "So long as the players uphold the noble spirit of sportsmanship, they honor the very essence of athletics. Victory and defeat are but the trappings of the game." It was clear he intended to use this opportunity to extol his philosophy, a fact I had anticipated. I nodded in agreement, then gently steered the conversation toward the origins of the sport itself.
"As I understand it, Rugby School is the very cradle of this game. Surely you must know a trove of fascinating tales from its history."
"But of course." Mr. Smith nodded with pride, gesturing toward the center of the field. "There, upon that very patch of turf, a brash young student once seized the ball and, like a bull, crashed through all opposition, crossing the midfield line. It was there that the great innovation known as 'Rugby Football' was born."
The name of that student, he recalled without hesitation.
"William Ellis?"
I immediately remembered seeing that name more than once in the Missing Persons column while sorting through the paper's archives. I had even heard that someone had paid in advance for years' worth of notices—a rare occurrence in our profession. Never had I imagined that the William of the newspaper and the student of Mr. Smith's tale were one and the same.
Yet, the player who had inspired a new sporting vogue did not continue his exploits on the field; rather, his mysterious disappearance piqued my curiosity. Alas, Mr. Smith's knowledge of him was scant. Still, from his limited account, I pieced together the outline of William Ellis's life, and the once unfamiliar name began to take on substance as our conversation unfolded.
In the eyes of Mr. Smith, William was not an outstanding student. Of humble origin, he seldom spoke of his family or himself, and his academic record was unremarkable. His sole distinction was an ardent passion for all manner of sport. Yet, he was impetuous and headstrong, ever eager to seize the limelight, often disregarding teamwork and the rules themselves. It was this very recklessness that led to that historic moment on the field.
I could almost picture the scene: as the match neared its climax, William's team lagged far behind. Unwilling to accept defeat, the young man, frantic and furious, seized the ball and charged headlong, leaving friend and foe alike in his wake, heedless of the referee's raised red flag and shrill whistle. The crowd, however, erupted in raucous applause at the spectacle.
"I have never seen a student so desperate for victory," Mr. Smith mused. "It seemed that, in his mind, nothing existed on the field but the goal. The purpose of sport is health, not victory at any cost. Rugby, I daresay, was ill-suited to one such as he." There was little regret in Mr. Smith's tone, as though the departure of William was but the passing of an unremarkable soul.
Not long after that interview, I learned from the police of a clue regarding William's disappearance: he had been seen hastily leaving the vicinity of a magic show, with another figure in pursuit. Though the sighting was some time before his vanishing, I resolved to bring this news to William's family. Using the contact information from the missing persons notice, I found his brother, Thomas Ellis.
Following the address, I arrived at a private clinic in Warwickshire. Upon entering, I beheld a man behind the counter—pale and gaunt, with spectacles of gold wire and eyes wholly unlike William's: gentle, scholarly, and tinged with the cool detachment of a physician.
Upon hearing my purpose and the clue I brought, Mr. Thomas merely offered a polite word of thanks before returning to his work among the bottles and vials.
"Thank you for your trouble, miss, but I doubt this has any bearing on my brother's disappearance." His words were a cold dousing, leaving me perplexed.
"William left because of money, not danger." Thomas produced a yellowed letter from his desk, the most prominent feature a line of bold, scrawled handwriting: "Here's your money! Soon I'll earn it all back through rugby. I'll prove you and Father wrong! Enjoy your life at the clinic, Thomas—you'll envy me!"
Thomas withdrew the letter, a flicker of guilt and pain passing through his eyes.
"He was always this way, chafing at every arrangement our father made for us. I, for my part, followed Father's wishes and studied medicine, inheriting this clinic after his death." Thomas's voice, usually cool, grew low as he fingered the edge of the letter. "After that, William rebelled against me as he had against Father. He would rather endure hardship than accept my help."
The family had once lived in Salford, Lancashire, but a smallpox epidemic claimed William's elder siblings. Their father, in his grief, blamed their mother's recklessness—she had underestimated the threat and taken the children out to play, with tragic results.
After divorcing his wife, William's father moved with his two sons to Warwickshire, but the shadow of the past had transformed him into a stern and controlling patriarch. He boarded up the windows of the clinic's second floor, keeping the boys always within his sight. Yet, he underestimated the rebellious spirit of a restless child.
"William despised such confinement, always finding ways to dismantle the metal screens and escape, even if it meant his back was bloodied by Father's belt. He would never admit fault." Thomas recounted these bleak memories with a calm voice, methodically arranging the medicine cabinet.
There were tales of their father teaching them to dissect frogs, only for William to smear the walls with the foul innards; of being made to recite the Hippocratic Oath, only for the pages to be torn out and folded into paper airplanes... I could scarcely imagine the shadow such mischievous defiance cast upon young William's heart, and felt a pang of sympathy.
"Did you never try to dissuade him? At least... not so openly?"
Thomas paused, then turned away, busying himself with the case notes on his desk.
"It was not William who tore the book. It was I."
Seeing my look of disbelief, Thomas gave a wry smile.
"I lacked William's courage. When Father discovered my hidden novels, I dared not confess. William would step forward and claim it was his right to read what he pleased... Compared to him, I was a coward, feigning obedience while harboring selfish fear." For the first time, Thomas's composure wavered, his emotions rippling beneath the surface.
"So, when you became a doctor, he lost all hope in the family?" I ventured.
"Yes. He would not live as I did—a puppet whose life was ruled by Father's hand." Thomas removed his spectacles, rubbing his brow in resignation. "For William, the field was the only place to vent his anger, to tear up the rules. Once he became a professional player, he severed all ties with Father, not even attending the funeral."
As dusk fell, Thomas rose to light the lamps. Only then did I notice the old photographs upon the stairwell wall—once a happy family of six, the Ellis brothers' graduation portraits, and many group photos of William's victories.
"Did you arrange these?" My gaze lingered on a bright, smiling team photo, the frame inscribed with the date and place of the championship.
"No, these were Father's doing. He had not seen William in many years... He asked me to gather these, to have them printed and framed." Thomas's eyes drifted to the stairs, as if recalling his father's lonely figure pacing there in his final days.
In that moment, I seemed to glimpse the tangled web of love and resentment that had bound these three men for so many years, now revealed in silent photographs. Alas, they would never see those knots undone.
As I left the clinic, I saw Thomas standing by the window, his figure bathed in the dim light, pale as a waxen statue. Perhaps he still awaited word from William Ellis, imagining him somewhere on a green field, charging through the rules, through the iron bars of childhood and suffocation, at last breaking into a smile of freedom and release.
Yet none can know that a lifetime of rebellion and collision may, unawares, transform a man into the most stubborn of caged beasts, wandering alone through a fog-shrouded and perilous estate, seeking a way out, and in the end, left only to await the hand of fate in despair and futility.

Manor's Stormy Night "Surprise" Game[]
My old school had the best team in the city! Hey, you know, I used to be a member of that team... Oh, I'm not trying to brag about my past glorious days, but today's topic reminds me of someone I met when I was on the team.
The seniors would always give rookies a hard time. They'd just make us... Ahem, I mean, they'd just make the rookies fetch balls and ride the bench. This was no big deal, but there was one new kid who was really odd and out of place. He was pale and as thin as a beanpole, and he never got involved with the others.
I was bored one day and started watching him, trying my best to engage him and work with him. I soon noticed that every time he handed the ball to a senior, he would sniff them discretely, and then mutter something to himself.
After passing the ball to the first senior, he said, "Pork chops."
At first, I thought he was insulting them in his own weird way...
Then there was a short little senior, who he smelled and said, "Milk."
Milk? He wasn't even that pale! Maybe he was trying to insult the fella, saying something about his height?
Then he came face to face with one of the most popular guys, who also happened to be the richest kid on the team. He looked at him and said, "Man."
Huh! This shrimp was too much of a coward to insult someone like that!
Then along came a seriously chubby senior, and he said, "Spinach."
The more I heard, the less I understood. Shouldn't this senior be a pork chop, too?
The next day, a big commotion erupted at our school. We didn't know all the details, just that the police had arrested a psycho serial killer. The news terrified everyone, and a lot of students transferred. But who was the killer anyway? Later, my gossipy buddy told me that, "The only lead the police had was that the killer was mainly active near our school, and because of the gross way he killed them, they hired someone with this peculiar ability to smell what people have eaten before.
So, they sent him to our school to investigate. "
I instantly thought of that skinny kid watching everyone silently from the corner, and all the different "dishes" he uttered that day...

Compiled Overview[]
Background[]
William Ellis was a successful student who was considered to have a good future ahead of him and was an important member of the football[10] team. However, he had a tendency to play too aggressively. One day, he severely injured another player's leg. It seems this caused him to be kicked off the team.
It seems William attended a magic show after being kicked off the team. When he snuck backstage, he saw one of the magicians fiddling with a chain, before he was chased away.[11]
However, because he loved the sport, running with a team, and the fame that could come from it, William began to come up with a similar but new sport that allowed for more aggressive plays, which he called Rugby Football. The sport soon became popular all across the country, but even the people who played it didn't remember him as the one who made the sport what it was. Without a reputation, a college graduate can only join a small club. At this period when he was wallowing in despair, a mysterious invitation changed the direction of life.
Events at the Manor[]
William was the second one to arrive at the Manor, and spent all of November 1st alone with Murro Morton (who he described as "twitchy"), before Kurt Frank and Naib Subedar arrived on November 2nd.[12] Due to weather, the Manor Game was postponed, and none of the participants were allowed to leave the manor, which William felt was stifling. In December, Murro went missing, and it was assumed he had run away through his bedroom window. A new participant, the magician Servais Le Roy, was brought to the manor as Murro's replacement and William recognized him.
On December 4th, Kurt and William were discussing what to do in the Manor since there was not much to do and they weren't allowed to go outside. Explorer suggested Forward to look for Naib while he looks for Murro.
William heard a portion of one of the arguments between Naib and Servais, leading him to believe Naib and Servais didn't like him. Due to his craving for meat, however, he requested a portion of the boar Naib hunted. Upon receiving the boar meat from Naib, William happily began to prepare it for dinner, but when rat poison got into his wine he was unable to continue his diaries, though he did survive the poisoning.[13]
William, bedridden, told Kurt that he knew that Servais was the one who poisoned him and believed that Servais was trying to silence him from telling everyone what he witnessed in the magic show years ago. Kurt then left the room to confront Servais about the incident.
William managed to escape the Manor Game he was a part of along with Naib. However, as an accomplice to Naib, he was "punished" for breaking the rules.[14] He was taken to the Processing Room to prepare for their punishment, which was execution. William witnessed the punishment and tried to escape into the forest only to be caught by Bane Perez and Burke Lapadura. He was then locked in the Manor and it is currently unknown what would happened to him after that.

- ↑ The answer to this question was originally shown incorrectly as "Murro" but it was later corrected to "Servais Le Roy."

- ↑ Referring to American Football
- ↑ William is likely the "young boy" mentioned by Servais in his 2020 letter, who was given as his excuse for "forgetting to check all the stage props" on the day his teacher died.
- ↑ See William's 2021 letter, which is also his first diary
- ↑ Servais put the rat poison in the kitchen (see Servais Le Roy Diaries) to combat the rats, and so this poisoning was likely accidental - unless Servais recognized William, then it may not have been.
- ↑ See Mercenary's 2022 letter
Translation Notes[]
- ↑ "November 2nd" is a mistranslation of "12月2日" in the original chinese version of the letter meaning "December 2"
Manor Game Table References[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Naib Subedar Diary 4 confirms that Bane caught both Naib and William on December 12th, seven days prior to the Manor Game's intended occurrence, thus insisting its cancellation.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 See Naib Subedar Diary 4.
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 See Forward's 2023 Letter
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 Details and confirmation of Naib killing "anyone who got in his way", which included his main target Murro Morton and Kurt Frank, is found on his 2022 Letter.
