Backstory[]
Character Introduction[]
"Alva, my friend, if you deny my research, I don't know who else might understand me in this world."
This was a long-standing nightmare for Alva Lorenz. At that time, Herman was still working with him, and the two of them always quarreled over the "perfect eternal machine." However, a fire sparked by an experiment destroyed everything, and when the smoke cleared, all he had left were Herman's records and manuscripts.
Years passed, and Alva became a famous inventor in the city, even with a sincere and diligent mentee of his own. But just when he was about to give him everything he'd accomplished, he was accused and betrayed by this very same apprentice:
"A thief who has exhausted his talents is not worthy of such wisdom. You monopolize my father's research efforts and always hinder my own... So, why are you so afraid of others stealing your findings?"
The dispute between master and student quickly became a topic of discussion in town. Alva was reluctant to defend himself, but public opinion was already rapidly fermenting in every corner of the city. As the situation intensified, an explosion the same as many years ago ended everything, and when Alva woke up, a group of people in long robes pushed through the door.
They told Alva that he was saved by a generous god who would give him a new power... and a new life free from harassment by others.
Alva chose to stay, where he could at least carry out his beloved research in peace. Now he understands that formulas and principles can never deduce human feelings, and that in this world, apart from the God who saved him from his predicament, no one deserves to stand by his side.[5]

Character Trailer[]
Trailer Transcript[]
Creating a perpetual motion machine
is like being trapped in a never-ending dream.
Reality grows from these sketches,
expanding through years of fruitless effort.
Yet this illusion is ceaselessly reflected in silent thoughts.
It should have died in flames with the last generation.
Mr. Lorenz,
based on our preliminary investigations
the suspect may be a student of yours.
Yet the embers rekindled in the next generation.
This is the law of nature.
If you really wish to rise above this law
you must dive deeper and deeper
to the bitter end
of darkness.

An Old Letter (2024)[]
Dear Professor Kaiser,
Thank you for your assistance the other day. All arrangements for Herman Zimman's funeral have been made. If you hadn't reached out to me after the incident, I would have never been able to plan for the future and reflect on the past on my own.
During our time as students, it was under your tutelage that Herman and I had our eyes opened to the beauty and great value of physics. We were classmates and colleagues for many years, and even now, I still find myself unable to overcome the tremendous pain of losing my best friend, especially when I think about how his life was wasted in the pursuit of that impossible dream—the Perpetual Motion Engine!
He once told me that if even I rejected his research, perhaps no one else in the world could truly understand him. But in response, I said science does not define truth with friendship, and I've always hoped that he would find his way back to the right path.
I'm grateful to him as he was a close friend who always stood by my side, and for the sake of allowing me to concentrate on my research, he even supported me financially when my father fell ill. On the other hand, upon learning the truth of it all, I felt puzzled and even furious about his choices. The fury I experienced made me recall the time we carried out research together and forced me to face the fact that he was gone, and that made me feel even more powerless and dejected.
At this point, I'm sure you've realized the reason I'm writing this letter. I'm very grateful for your invitation to stay at the academy and teach in the academy's laboratory. But I still find myself unable to face the past. Herman's passing left me needing more time to consider the future of my research. How do I avoid betraying my past yet advance cautiously toward the truth?
So, I've decided to leave my current environment and seek a new home. Perhaps work, family, or some other personal objective. In the everchanging reaches of time and space, people eventually find hope and peace within them again. I still intend to continue my scientific exploration, but this time, I will choose my direction more cautiously to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
As for our "results," I will seal away that sinful machine for eternity. Perhaps no one else will remember it after Herman until it completely vanishes in the annals of time.

A Page of Notes (2025)[]
Before I was to fully immerse myself in the sacred duty of examining the ritual, Lord Alva, in his great wisdom, gathered me and a select few followers for a final briefing. It was a session that revealed the ineffable beauty of the divine gifts and refinements bestowed upon my soul.
The enlightenment of the Eye of Darkness manifests itself to each individual in different and mysterious ways. It often shapes the very essence of one's being with a precision and thoroughness that transcends mortal comprehension, answering the deepest, most fervent yearnings of every soul burned by its inner fire.
The eyes—those clear, feline orbs—removed from me the tangled web of emotions that had once obstructed my path. In their stead, I was granted clarity, a singular focus, that allowed me to serve the greater, transcendent work with unwavering devotion. The affections, the pains, the turmoil that had once bent my will, all were stripped from me. In their absence, a serenity unlike any I had ever known overtook me.
As for Lord Alva, his consciousness had long since become a serene and perfect void, in which the wheels of order and the delicate threads of causality moved in quiet rhythm. His transformation seemed far more absolute and deep than my own, and I could not help but perceive in him an aura of something holy. Perhaps this is the very thing the venerable one had longed for, but had never fully attained?
......
The tasks I have undertaken in these past days are but a small part of the larger preparations for the ritual to come. While I lack the standing to truly partake in its heart, I nonetheless find myself honored by my involvement. According to Lord Alva's design, all actions that can ensure the ritual's success, no matter how seemingly small, are essential.
One reason is Lord Alva's distrust of the ritual's sponsor. The invitation promised all necessary "materials" and assurances for the ceremony, but this also suggested that the sponsor may have known far more than we anticipated—perhaps even the recent operations I had conducted in the Netherlands. Thus, I was ordered to journey there, to retrace the steps of the jailbreak and scrutinize the lingering traces and details of the event.
I place my full trust in Lord Alva's judgment: even if the invitation is generous, the sponsor's underlying intentions are undoubtedly at odds with ours. The vague assurances of "beneficial outcomes" may well conceal ulterior motives—hidden conditions that demand a cautious eye. And I know that Lord Alva, ever vigilant, will never go unprepared.
Upon my arrival in the Netherlands, I conducted a thorough investigation of the area surrounding Het Arresthuis. Here, in this very place, the great divine presence had imparted its revelation, and it was from this very jailbreak that the perfect candidate for the forthcoming ritual had been chosen. The traces of the escape plan, once carefully laid by several of our brethren, had been meticulously erased. From the scant testimonies I gathered, it seemed that other unknown parties had been involved, their fates now shrouded in mystery. Strangely, the nearby cemeteries, where our fallen comrades were said to rest, had been emptied.
I relayed these findings to Lord Alva, and a swift reply came—indicating that I must soon set forth once more.
However, there is one detail I withheld from my report: during my investigation, I happened upon a cemetery near a small village. There, I discovered a gravestone bearing the name of Lord Alva. It was an unadorned stone—bereft of epitaph, untouched by the rot of decaying leaves. Only a thin layer of ash lay upon its surface.
(The notes are accompanied by a brief reply, an order to proceed to England and await further instructions.)

Compiled Overview[]
Backstory[]
Alva Lorenz left his home for a better place. While in schooling, he met Herman Zeeman. The two became best friends and research partners. Herman was obsessed with the idea of a perpetual motion machine, which the two investigated in their research. At some point, Herman disappeared for two years before returning to their research, without an explanation for Alva. Alva by this time began to get doubts about their research. He was starting to think it wasn't feasible and that they shouldn't focus their research on something that "does not exist." The two began to quarrel about the perpetual motion machine. Tabloids began to come out revealing that Herman had spent his family's fortune on his research and had abandoned his family, causing his wife to die and his son to run away. Herman, perhaps sparked by Alva's doubts, began to write that Alva had betrayed him, deprived him of his ideals, and destroyed his life. One day, a fire broke out which killed Herman, leaving Alva with his manuscripts. Alva grieved over Herman, making arrangements for the man's funeral and deciding to lock away his work on the perpetual motion machine with the hope that no one else would pursue it and lose their life like Herman did. Alva also decides to seek out a new purpose in life, still continuing his scientific exploration but not wanting to repeat the same mistakes again.
Some time later, Alva would attend to the Laiden Art and Industry Exhibit. Despite his unease towards it, he was persuaded to display the work done on the perpetual motion machine. This would attract the attention of Luca Balsa. Luca would write a letter to Alva, asking to become a student of his and attaching some of Herman's manuscripts that he had in his possession. Alva would take Luca on as a student and apprentice, the two continuing work on the perpetual motion machine. At some point, Luca discovered evidence of his father's work with Alva on the machine. Luca believed Alva had stolen Herman's work and claimed it as his own. Some of Alva's manuscripts went missing, which Alva reported to the police. It was believed that the stolen manuscripts may have ended up in the hands of a competitor. The police believed a student of his may be responsible. Alva and Luca had a confrontation, which led to an explosion similar to that which killed Herman. Alva died and Luca was blamed for his death and sent to jail.[9]
Alva would awaken to a group of people in robes. They claimed their god, the Eye of Darkness, had saved Alva's life and would give him powers allowing him to continue his research. Alva decided to join the religion and serve the god. As part of the faith, Alva would travel to a village where he would meet and convert the father of Ann to the faith. In a letter to Alva, Ann's father would write of his plans to leave the village with his daughter. Unfortunately, this would never happen as Ann's father succumbed to the plague.
Events at the Manor[]
Alva and another disciple of the Eye of Darkness would arrive to Oletus Manor for a religious ceremony. This ritual would elevate the disciple to the status of a herald of the Eye of Darkness.[10] While at the manor, Alva seemed to sense the presence of an infiltrator watching them.[11]
It is currently unknown what happened to Alva at the manor.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- It is unknown if Alva actually stole Herman's inventions and passed them off as his own as Luca claimed. It is also unknown if Luca actually gave Alva's work to a competitor.
- "Prisoner's" description from the Official Website mentions that Alva had a wife. (He can no longer conduct scientific research and all of his savings went to the immense compensation for the inventor's wife.)[5]
- Alva's wife might a relative of Professor Kaiser as Alva's inspiration Hendrik Lorentz would end up marrying the niece of his professor Frederik Kaiser.
- With the mention in Alva's first letter that Herman supported him financially when his father fell ill, it may be possible that some of Herman's family fortune that tabloids reported he spent on his research actually went towards helping Alva financially.
- Some theorize Alva died as part of the ceremony and is one of the participants who "would never have the chance to awaken again" mentioned in "Disciple's" 2024 Letter.
- It is speculated that the writer of Alva's 2025 Letter is the Lanternist given the significance of the writer's visit to Het Arresthuis. Het Arresthuis was where Mr. Leroux showed off his optical device, which is similar to the "optical toys" Amanda is interested in.
- It is likely the sponsor mentioned in Alva's 2025 Letter is Baron DeRoss.
