Identity V Wiki
"Little Girl" Identity Journalist Identity

This article is about the Survivor Character. For the starring character in the Identity V Story, see Reporter. For her Identity Switch counterpart, see "Little Girl".

Films are silent, but memories are not.

Alice DeRoss, also known as the Journalist or the Reporter, is a Rescue-Type and Difficulty 2 Survivor available for purchase after completion of the prologue. She is the older Survivor identity of the "Little Girl" as well as the 2nd Survivor Playable version of Reporter Alice DeRoss, and one of 48 playable Survivors added to Identity V.

Whenever in doubt, whenever trouble strikes, face it, and it'll all be over; that is what I've always believed.

—Alice DeRoss (Journalist Backstory Trailer)

Appearance

Alice is a slender doll with fair skin, thin, furrowed blonde eyebrows, wavy blonde hair pulled into a short, braided rope with a large, cerulean bow at the back of her head, with messy bangs parted into two and framing her face, and hazel button eyes cross-stitched with white thread. She also wears pale red lipstick.

She wears a white sweater with a high, ruffled, tapered turtleneck collar, a pale, dull blue, fitted cardigan with three grey buttons on the left side and long, tapered sleeves, an ankle-length, pleated, checkered, warm grey skirt, and tall, laced-up leather boots with pointed toes and heels. A thin leather rope with a cerulean-crystal-encrusted, round, gold pendant hangs around her neck, and she wears fitted leather gloves. She holds a large, vintage, leather-padded camera with gleaming white edges, a glass shutter button on the top right corner, and a translucent, pale blue lens in her hands.

Gameplay

The Journalist is a rescue-type Survivor who has a Camera that can alternate between rescuing and pallet-dropping modes, with only one use for the rescue mode, and three for the pallet-dropping mode. She gains a speed boost if the Hunter hits the summoned illusion while it is actively rescuing a chaired teammate or going to a nearby pallet. In relation to this, it means that she can avoid the risk of being hit while kiting or rescuing herself, and the illusion can also serve as a distraction while she emerges and rescues her teammate. She has a 10% decreased decoding speed, and with each hit her illusions take, her decoding speed reduces further for up to an additional 9%. However, she takes longer to be eliminated when chaired, with the countdown being reduced by 10%.

External Traits

Below is a list of Journalist's intrinsic traits. For more in-depth information, please check the individual pages.

External Traits
Trait Description

Exclusive
Cooldown: 6 seconds
Quantity (Containing/Rescuing Angle): 3/1
Duration (Containing/Rescuing Angle): 14/14 seconds

The Journalist carries a camera. She can switch between camera angles and generate illusions under different angles.

Containing Angle
The illusion will move to a pallet that hasn't been knocked down. When the Hunter is in a position that can be hit by the pallet, the illusion will pull down the pallet and disappear. The recovery speed of the Hunter stunned by the illusion increases by 30%. When the pallet is pulled down early, the illusion will also disappear. The Hunter will take 20% longer to destroy the pallet that was pulled down by the illusion. When the distance between the illusion and a teammate is less than 12 meters, the illusion's depletion speed is increased by 50%. When the illusion is active, casting this ability again will make it disappear. If no selectable pallets are nearby, the illusion will continue forward in a straight line until it collides with an obstacle.

Rescuing Angle
When a teammate has been tied to a Rocket Chair and is less than 25 meters from the Journalist, the illusion will move to the closest Rocket Chair and rescue the teammate. If the teammate on the Rocket Chair is rescued by another Survivor, the illusion will disappear. Under this angle, when the illusion is less than 20 meters from the Hunter, its outline will be shown to the Hunter.

How to Use
Generates an illusion in front of you. Press and hold to charge up and generate an illusion at a specified location. Under the Rescuing Angle, illusions cannot be generated within 8 meters of a Rocket Chair that has a Survivor on it. When only illusions are left under the Rescuing Angle, you may switch to the illusion's angle via Photo Mode.

Surveying Angle
The illusion's movement speed and interaction speed are consistent with the Survivor. It can take one normal attack, but the Hunter won't gain any Presence. The recovery speed of the Hunter after hitting the illusion increases by 30%.
When either the Journalist or the illusion is hit, both of them will gain a speed boost. If the illusion is hit, the Journalist's speed boost will increase by 1 second.
If the Journalist is equipped with the Tide Turner talent and the illusion under the Rescuing Angle had rescued a teammate, the rescued teammate will also receive Tide Turner's effect.
When the Journalist and the illusion are less than 8 meters from each other, the Journalist's Movement Speed is increased by 10% (7% increase for the illusion).

Investigative Reporting
The Reporter hates the sound of metal scraping and so her decoding speed is reduced by 10%. Whenever the illusion is knocked down, the Reporter's decoding speed is further reduced by 3% for up to 9%.

"Courage"
The Reporter's childhood has bestowed her with exceptional "courage" in the face of terror, decreasing the Rocket Chair's elimination speed by 10%.

Tips

As Journalist

  • The "photo" Journalist takes is based on the direction the in-game model faces, but ability direction is dependent on camera angle.
  • Unless a specific target location is selected, the illusion created will always run towards the nearest pallet in the direction the camera is facing.
  • Long-tap and drag the ability button to adjust the illusion's spawn point closer or further away from the target location.
    • Simply tapping will work, but will take some time for the illusion to be in place.
  • There is no distance limit as to which pallet you can select, but keep in mind that the ability is only active for a short time, and the time the illusion spends running to the target location is also part of the ability duration.
  • The illusion will disappear if its current objective (rescuing a survivor/pulling down a pallet) is complete. Communicate with your teammates to avoid wasting your ability.
  • Journalist's illusion can also bodyblock similar to Mechanic's doll if timed correctly. The easiest way to do so is tapping the ability button once and following the trail the illusion will follow.
    • You may want to turn your camera towards a pallet leading to a favorable kiting area before using your ability.
    • If a pallet/window is in the path of the illusion, it will vault them on its way to the target location. You can't vault when the illusion is vaulting.
      • Beware of this when using it to bodyblock, as it does not follow you, only the path. If not careful, the illusion may actually block your kiting path and you may get hit.
  • The illusion can rescue from a second floor location, as long as the actual distance from the spawn point to the chair is within range.
    • The illusion has good potential for basement rescues, as there will not be 2 survivors trapped in the basement.
    • Rescuing with the illusion is best done with another survivor to distract the hunter if the Journalist cannot go, as the illusion will disappear after the rescue or if it is hit.
      • A survivor with Wanted Order can pretend to try and rescue while the illusion/Journalist runs to the chair.
      • Priestess is a great support for an illusion rescue, as the rescued person will have another way out of the basement.
  • When rescuing with the illusion, Journalist should stay nearby in case it gets hit. Hitting the illusion will trigger attack recovery and gives Journalist a speed boost, allowing her to rescue with less pressure.
    • The speed boost from the illusion being hit can stack with Herd Mentality.
  • Sometimes, the illusion can rescue from a chair blocked off by Mad Eyes' fence.
  • The illusion cannot be leeched by Dream Witch.
  • If the hunter is Wax Artist, using the illusion to stun him may be a better choice than taking the wax yourself.
  • Hunters like Sculptor and Night Watch can temporarily push away the illusion from a pallet or rocket chair, but it will run back until either the ability duration is finished or the objective is completed.
  • If timed correctly, the illusion can also balloon rescue teammates by stunning the hunter. If you have a Journalist nearby, crawl into a pallet for a potential rescue opportunity.
  • If Journalist happens to disconnect or get knocked down, if her ability is already active the illusion will still complete the objective unless it is knocked down, ability duration ends, or the objective is already complete.
  • Tide Turner is a good talent for Journalist, as both her and her illusion will provide the effect regardless of which of them actually rescues.
  • Brewing Effect can be helpful to make up for lost decoding progress when Journalist rescues, especially if nobody else has finished the cipher in the meantime.

Against Journalist

  • Hitting the illusion does not provide presence and gives Journalist a speed boost, but will also give her a 3% decoding debuff every time the illusion is knocked down.
    • It's not the worst if you hit the illusion early game, but keep in mind that it triggers attack recovery.
    • An exception to this rule is Hermit: if the illusion shares a polarity with other survivors, it will share the damage and Hermit will gain presence.
  • If possible, try to avoid breaking pallets dropped by the illusion as they take longer to break.
  • When both Journalist and the illusion are running to rescue, it's preferable to hit Journalist as the illusion will disappear after the rescue.
    • Otherwise, you will trigger attack recovery, the rescue will still be completed, and Journalist can still bodyblock. If you hit Journalist, the illusion gains a speed boost to rescue but she will be injured, which is a better trade-off.
  • If the chair is still at a considerable distance, very mobile hunters may consider hitting the illusion, and moving over to the chair to hit the Journalist, as hitting the illusion results in a shorter attack recovery than normal. If paired with 3 stacks of Berserker and Inertia, hunters could potentially recover up to 65% faster after hitting the illusion.
  • Most hunters' skills and secondary attacks can also be used on the illusion, including but not limited to the following:
  • Beware of the illusion waiting behind pallets when a downed survivor crawls into a pallet and a Journalist is nearby. If possible, hit the illusion first. Otherwise, take the stun before ballooning the survivor.
  • It is possible to bait the illusion into dropping the pallet without getting stunned. You have a stand for a very short duration near the illusion and it will drop the pallet without stunning you.
