Alice DeRoss, also known as the Journalist, is one of the 50 playable Survivors added to Identity V.
This page is a compilation of lore and story content for this character.
Backstory[]
Character Introduction[]
Alice DeRoss had a fulfilling childhood and a happy family. Enlightened and gentle parents, kind and reliable playmates shaped her optimistic and cheerful personality.
However, a tragic accident at the age of six changed everything, the family fell overnight, she was also known as the daughter of misfortune, suffered from hysteria and was sent to the orphanage.
She experienced both mental and physical torture in the orphanage until she was secretly adopted by a medical professor as an experimental subject and brought to Melbourne when she was 14 years old.
With prolonged medication and physical therapy, she gradually regained consciousness, however, it is perhaps more cruel to live soberly in hell than to live unaware in human world.
Luckily, the voice that existed in her memory kept saving her back to the brink of collapse repeatedly. Finally, all this changed her, but did not destroy her.
At the age of 21, Alice escaped back to England and became a social journalist in anonymity, looking for the truth about the tragedy and the disappearance of her playmates.
As an adult, Alice is elegant and intelligent, tough and brave personality, good at observation and disguise, as well as having excellent oratorical talent and analytical ability, unforgettable, able to sharply capture the emotions of others, however, because of pathological reasons, and drug testing at an early age, her sense of fear to be significantly weaker than normal, but also have more than normal endurance.
But even if she overcame the nightmare of the past, but it does not remove it. When alone, Alice de Rose[sic] has a serious cleanliness and obsessive-compulsive disorder, always wears gloves and hates sharp sounds.[3]
Character Relations Menu[]
Alice DeRoss's childhood was one of affluence, and her home life was the epitome of happiness. Her loving and caring parents, along with her kind-hearted and dependable playmates, sculpted her into a beacon of optimism and cheer.
However, at the tender age of six, a devastating tragedy turned her life upside down. Her family's fortune vanished overnight, and she was labeled as a bringer of misfortune. This led to her being gripped by hysteria and cast into the somber halls of an orphanage.
The orphanage was a crucible of torment, both of the mind and the body, until at the age of fourteen, she became a test subject and was secretly adopted by a professor who took her to Melbourne.
Over time, with the help of medication and physical therapy, her mind started to clear. However, to face clarity in such a place might have been a greater cruelty than wandering the world in a state of chaos.
Fortunately, a voice from her past, unwavering and calm, continuously guided her away from the edge of despair.
In the end, these hardships changed her, but they did not break her spirit.
At twenty-one, Alice returned to England under a veil of anonymity, reinventing herself as a social journalist. While shedding light on the dark corners of society, she sought the truth of the past tragedy, and the lost playmate who had disappeared in the crowd.

A Crumpled Medical Report (2024)[]
(The back of the paper is covered in sawdust, while the front bears fragmented information written in somewhat juvenile handwriting.)
Greetings. It seems I was correct—you found my message. Someone left a pen here—I've hidden it in the crevice between the second window and the iron bars. Perhaps they hoped you'd write something down, as I have.
...
Greetings. Yes, I've found them. I'll write down what I remember, then return them to their place. The nurses wouldn't want any extra things lying about the room now, would they?
...
I seem to have forgotten something... What a good start—at least I remember that I forgot something.
...
They had my favorite chestnut cake this morning.
...
No, wasn't breakfast raspberry cake?
...
Who are you?
...
Someone changed my medication. It must've been the one who left the pen.
...
Who are you?
...
If you're reading this, then you've guessed correctly...
...
Who are you?
...
I've discovered Dr. Bourbon's secret.
...
Who are you?
...
Remember, you've already forgotten "who I am..."
...
Who are you?
...
That key is in Dr.Bourbon's drawer.
...
Who are you?
...
They seem to have noticed the issue with the medication, but no matter, we can strike tonight.
...
Welcome back, my bravest Nightingale.

Compiled Overview[]
Background[]
Alice DeRoss was born to Dennis DeRoss and his wife. She grew up in Oletus Manor together with her family and older adoptive brother. This would all change when she was six as an angry mob broke into the manor, killing her parents and taking her and her brother away.
After her family's death, she became an orphan at Myles Orphanage. She was mentioned to be "insane" as described by the head of the orphanage and was unable or unwilling to communicate with anyone.
On December 23rd, 1894, Mr. "▇▇▇" (The name is blotted out with ink) had requested to adopt her, but his request was denied as the head of the orphanage believed a blood relative was more fit for the role, though they did agree to him visiting Alice as a friend once her condition became stable.[5]
At 14, Alice was secretly adopted by Villhelm Lamb, a medical professor, and taken to Melbourne. There, she was used as an experimental test subject. After some time with medication and physical therapy, she was able to regain consciousness, with some mental side effects.
At 21, Alice was able to escape back to England, becoming a journalist. She continued to search for answers about the tragedy that befell her family, trying to return back to the manor. During this time, she herself was being investigated by unknown individuals for an unknown purpose.[6]
One day, while investigating the Golden Cave mining disaster, Alice received a message from a colleague of hers who had managed to gain an invitation to Oletus Manor under a false identity. Alice, with this in hand, would assume that false identity and go to the manor in her place. After packing up her belongings, she headed out.
Events at the Manor[]
Alice was the 2nd person in her group to arrive at the manor. Upon arrival, she immediately met Frederick Kreiburg, who was playing a song on the piano. She questioned him for a bit before he took his leave. Investigating the manor's living room, Alice found it exactly how she remembered it, as if someone had restored it to how it was before the tragedy. The manor's butler then shows her to her guest room, which was coincidentally her childhood bedroom.
At night, Alice continued to explore the manor, before going to the Muse Corridor. She opens the door to the Secret Study, finding diaries of other participants inside. After investigating, she returns to her room for the rest of the night.
The next morning, Alice awakens, recalling the events of the previous night. She is startled by a bird flying into her window. The butler then knocks on her door and let her know breakfast is being served. After taking her seat, Melly Plinius enters the room. The two strike up a conversation, with Melly claiming to have come to investigate a specific species of bees. Frederick then enters, looking slightly upset. The final guest, Orpheus, then enters, greeting the others. The butler informs them that the lord wishes to meet them at the Kreiburg Racecourse that afternoon and warns them about wandering at night or leaving the manor. Orpheus informs the group about the history of the racecourse including the manor's previous owner, Manus de Capet, and his wife, Mary de Capet, who the racecourse was named for. The group discussed Mary's suicide, starting to question Frederick as he shared the same last name as Mary. Frederick retreated to his room while denying all relation. The remaining people then depart as well, with Alice deciding to investigate the others more, starting with Orpheus.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- The man who requests to adopt her from Myles Orphanage is implied to be Orpheus.
- It is theorized that after being adopted by Villhelm Lamb, he changed Alice's name to Eury Lamb to keep her identity hidden.
- In part 1 of Ashes of Memory, Alice receives a letter addressed to Eury Lamb.
- In Journalist's 2025 letter, it's possible that Ollie Lamb is a pseudonym, and since that Alice is connected to an organization and wrote a job application letter to a Spectrum Institution's Editor, she wants to keep her real identity a secret.
- Some theorists have speculated that Ollie Lamb is actually Alice's Colleague's real name or a biological daughter of Villhem Lamb.
- This was somehow debunked according to Gamekeeper's 2025 Letter Marked for Investigation when it was confirmed that the writer, Frye Reed, referred Alice as "Miss Lamb" for an ongoing mystery case.
