This article is about Brynhildr's Mother. For her ancestor that she was named after, see Lagertha Vilulf (Ithaqua's Adoptive Mother).
Lagertha Vilulf was a woman from the Vilulf clan and the leader of the ship The Vinland before she gave the leadership to her daughter Brynhildr Vilulf. She was a mother of 3 children. She died to hypothermia while sheltering Brynhildr from the cold during their exile.
Appearance[]
Lagertha is a young looking woman of fair skin. Her red, long, wavy hair is tied into a high ponytail with a black hair tie, her bangs are curled upwards and then swooped off to the sides. She wears a white loose plain shirt with tears at the bottom, with a dark sash around her waist, and a belt around her waist, alongside a loose blueish fabric tied underneath the waist belt. She wears brown leather gloves that cover the rest of her arms. She is wearing a long light blue coat, with torn sleeves. She has brown trousers and brown leather boots. She is typically seen with a blade or a spyglass in her hand.
Compiled Overview[]
Lagertha was the daughter of the head of the Vilulf Family, Erik the Redbearded, who made their name feared across the Norwegian Sea. Erik named her after a legendary and well-respected ancestor, and Lagertha now beared an equally impressive and fearsome reputation, even being the reason for a commonly known saying across nearby seas: "God save us from encountering the Vilulfs.”
Lagertha would have some children at some point, her eldest being a son. She however gave birth to a girl on a stormy night, while a surprise attack was launched by enemies. During this labor, her child's cries were said to have change the tides in their favors, and the Vilulf Clan survived and won the battle. Lagertha crowned her daugther the name of a valkryie/shield-maiden, Brynhildr. Brynhildr was raised with adoration and love by the clan, and idolized her mother, however, Lagertha didn't want her daughter to go through the hardships of the sea conflicts, and wanted her to live a free, happy, unrestrained life, away from pressure and responsibilites, hence why she trained her eldest son to be her successor.
Brynhildr, believing she wasn't chosen because a lack of hard work, started to study and train tirelessly alongside her second brother. Eventually, Lagertha made her the successor, receiving not only the leadership of the ship "Vinland", but also a Keel Bow crafted by her. Seeing this as a recognition from her mother, Brynhildr became more rebellious and unrestrained, she recruited foreign crew members, celebrated every small victory, and attempted to become an excellent captain, to prove Lagertha she made the right decision selecting her.
However, Brynhildr wasn't aware of the countless sacrifices Lagertha, Erik, and other previous leaders had to make to exist and survive. She was under the belief that being on "Vinland" would mean never betraying it, never considering the greedy things some might do. Brynhildr was eventually taken as bait at the Execution Dock, which resulted in her Clan, including Lagertha, to arrive through the waves in attempts to save her. Either through an ambush that destroyed "Vinland" and it's crew, or being executed at the dock, Lagertha met her end with the rest of the Vilulf Clan, which left her daughter all alone and guilt-ridden for the fall of her family, believing her birth made the prophecy of leading warriors to Valhalla come true.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- There are a lot of similarities between the Lagertha from the 18th Century and the second Lagertha from the current time, these similarities are likely purposefully emphasised by them bearing the same names, sharing red hair, and having children, showing history repeating itself.
- It's possible that Lagertha felt pressure to live up to her ancestor's name, and as a result she wanted to make sure Brynhildr doesn't follow the same path attempting to live up to Brunhild.
