Lagertha Vilulf was a woman from the Vilulf clan, a former second mate of the ship Vinland, and the adoptive mother of Ithaqua in the 18th century. She was accused of witchcraft in the Plateau of Leng.

Appearance[]

She is a young looking woman of fair skin. Her hair is red, long and wavy, highlighting her green eyes. She wears a long green dress that is fastened at the waist and a pair of brown finger-less gloves. Her outerwear in Ithaqua's trailer varies from heavy brown cloak with hood to light colored wool scarf.

After her torture from the witch trials she is seen with a white dress with a ruffled open collar, brown leather belt at the waist, and chains from the secret chamber around her neck still. Her clothes are torn and her appearance is more messy after the incident.

Compiled Overview[]

Originally a member of the Vinland, Lagertha was part of the Vilulf clan, and fought alongside Ragnar Vilulf, her family member. During her early years she was inspired by the “old man”’s comments about being bold in life, so she explored an alternate path in life. She decided to leave Vinland, and become a traveller; at the time, her relative Ragnar Vilulf was still young. Lagertha found solace in her travels to shores, cities, grasslands and reading, and although she would’ve been seen as a traitor, she was drawn by “the call from the north”, which led her to her current location, the Plateau of Leng.

In a village, she offered seed pods for pregnant women and rowan berries to those in need, but had watchful eyes on her from the church committee, and the tense atmosphere forced her to move on, likely to the wooden hut she stayed at in the northern forest.

Lagertha was accused of being a witch by the church, forcing her to flee the village.[3] At some point, Lagertha used the η Ursae Majoris star in the northern sky as a guide, but in her path she was lead to a young infant boy, who she would take in and name as Eta Vilulf. We don’t know how long she was taking care of it at the time of writing her 3rd unsent letter to Ragnar, but the star atlas told her to travel far away three years, but she was left unsure as she believed she should raise Ithaqua until he can fend for himself. She raised Ithaqua as her own for more than fifteen years, teaching him how to read, and likely also how to hunt. She would often tell him the story of the abominable snowman[4], and likely other stories. In her fourth unsent letter to Ragnar, she mentions how the change of staying took fifteen years longer than expected, this made her change her interpretation of the star atlas and the messages, believing destruction can nurture life, and let her raise Ithaqua at least for a few more years until he is capable on his own.

One day, the magistrate's son and Ithaqua's twin, Nathaniel Norwell, led a mob of villagers to their home, taking Ithaqua's adoptive mother due to her reputation as a witch.[5] Ithaqua was able to infiltrate the village and rescue his mother. However, due the the torture she had gone through, Lagertha had gone mad and didn't recognize him.[6] When leaving to protect the forest, Ithaqua tells her: "Sleep, mother. I will keep watch at night. Fear not, for no living man shall disturb you again."[7]

A few years later, a descendant of hers would be named after. The second Lagertha Viulfs would become a fearsome figure of the seas around the Scandivanian Region, she gave birth to 3 known children. Her eldest son was gonna become the next one in line to inherit her leadership, while her daughter, Brynhildr Vilulf would become a leader of her own group and attempt to show her strength and skill.

Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]

  • Lagertha appears to be based on Lagertha, a Viking ruler and shield-maiden from what is now Norway, who was also the wife of Ragnar Lodbrok at some point.
    • This might mean that they’re wife and husband, but the way Lagertha addresses him in the unsent letters seem to imply they’re not partners, only referring to be his family, and due to the fact she knew him when he was younger might mean they’re simply relatives.
      • It should be noted in Danish Sources, after he married Lagertha, they had three children. If their relationship is the same as their original counterparts, Ithaqua was likely not Lagertha’s first child.
  • The reason why Magistrate Norwell might’ve been adamant on his wife’s stillborn child being a curse could be because of Lagertha’s offering seed pods to pregnant women and rowan berries to those in need, placing her as a suspect of being responsible for the stillborn state of Ithaqua.
    • Another reason could be confusing her connections to astrology as a form of witchcraft.
  • Considering she wanted the Vinland members to go to Scandivania, the mentioned peninsula might be the Scandinavian Peninsula. As the Lagertha from the Norse Legend originated from Norway, this might mean they’re either all from Norway or from the Scandivania subregion in general.
  • Their clan seems to be intricately connected to astrology and stars, as Lagertha and Ragnar constantly rely on stars, such as for navigation and prophecies.
  • Since Lagertha’s fourth letter is a reply, it seems some of her letters did fortunately get sent to him, either that, or perhaps they communicated via the stars and the moon.
  • Lagertha finding Ithaqua by using η Ursae Majoris, also known as Alkaid, might be foreshadowing her fate of becoming his adoptive mother, as the star is part of the Ursa Major constellation, which often is seen as a mother bear to Ursa Minor in mythology.
