The lawyer and the doctor were participants in the same game. According to his entries, keeping a diary was a rule that all participants had to obey.

A Break-up Letter (2020)
Dear Freddy:
I should have already left by the time you read this letter.
I know you may be confused, but just look at the newspaper.
No, actually, you may know all about what happened.
That damn acquisition ruined everything.
Do you remember the night before we left White Sand Street?
I asked you, was Minerva a good investment plan?
That was the only time I asked for your complete honesty.
You said, if the investor had sufficient experience and capital, this would bring him immense wealth.
But look at what the news reported!
"This unfortunate investor acquired a factory with over an over 4-figure debt."
Yes, Leo wasn't smart. He didn't have any investment experience, not to mention capital.
Yet even the dumbest person knows not to spend money to take on extra debts.
I know how you'd react.
That's why I wouldn't stay and listen to what you have to say.
I wouldn't let Lisa, my daughter, stay in the orphanage alone.
As for the unborn Annecy, I'm going to give her a new name.
Don't worry about our future.
Annecy will grow up with Lisa and become an honest person.
No one can get away with their responsibilities, Freddy.
We all have to pay for what we've done.
A Diagnosis Reply Letter (2021)
Dear Mr. Riley,
Your wife and I talked for about 3 hours last week. From a psychological point of view, she's only mildly anxious. This is common during the early stage of pregnancy. You don't have to worry. She will feel much better with plenty of rest supplemented by the prescribed medicine.
The prescribed medicine is attached. Please follow the instructions on dosage.
Also, I'd really appreciate it if you could come with your wife on her next visit so that we can discuss your investment in "that hospital" we mentioned previously.

Serial No. 4-0-3
Name: Freddy Riley
[Test Indicators]
1. Liar
2. Lover
3. Unscrupulous
[Inclination]
Profiteering "Hypocrite"
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation:
In all respects, No. 4-0-3 is a very standard test subject, hypocritical, cruel, arrogant, and so lofty. The petri dish created by ambition allows his evilness to be presented in the most typical way, and revenge becomes a better catalyst than drugs.
2. Procedure:
In the preparation phase of the experiment, No. 4-0-3 showed strong hostility to No. 4-0-2 and showed varying degrees of alertness to No. 4-1-1 and No. 4-0-4. All these kept him at a distance from other subjects.
In the conflict between No. 4-0-2 and him, No. 4-0-3 exposed his enmity against No. 4-0-2, culminating in a higher risk of punishment. But considering that there were no more suitable test subjects to make up for the time being in this round of experiments, no eradicative punishment had been conducted for No. 4-0-3.
Referring to the newly collected information in the first phase, we induced No. 4-0-3 in the second phase of the experiment, allowing him to receive the key information set for him in advance. No. 4-0-3's hostility changed from No. 4-0-2 to No. 4-0-4.In this phase, his behavior towards No. 4-0-4 was more cautious and purposeful than in the first phase, but this behavioral characteristic was limited to his exchanges with No. 4-0-4, making him less careful against the deadlier threat.
3. Experiment Summary:
As far as No. 4-0-3 was concerned, in the early stage of the experiment, all the behavioral goals of No. 4-0-3 originated from his class superiority and his desire to maximize benefits. These socialized behavior motives may be negative. But in fact, these were what made him maintain a high level of vigilance in the preset environment of the experiment, creating a safe zone different from other experimental subjects.
This was until a more individualized source of motivation that he himself defined as "love" dominated. The negative behavior that bred based on this positive motive, revenge, caused greater trauma to the target while destroying No. 4-0-3's defensive shell, so that he shielded the vigilance towards all outside the target, completely exposing himself to the real danger.
It is worth noticing that the actual arrival time of No. 4-0-2 did not match the expectation, which affected the drug use sequence of No. 4-0-3 and No. 4-0-4 to a certain extent, and caused some trouble in the experimental process. But at least, it did not seem to have much impact on the experimental results themselves.
However, considering the diversity of subsequent experiments, this risk needs to be further avoided. Do not use drugs blindly until the experimental environment is sufficiently stable.
Moreover, this experiment also proved that verifying certain experimental conclusions does not necessarily require pharmaceutical intervention.

A Message (2024)
Freddy Riley once regarded interests as the only measure of life, until the scales of love and death fell on the same side. When the shadow of the dead transforms into a call for revenge, only the weight of another death can restore balance.
Freddy Riley: Investigation Field Notes I (2025)
After investigating the ownership transitions of the Minerva Factory, I found Freddy Riley's business dealings in mergers and acquisitions particularly intriguing. As the case unfolded, I realized Freddy wasn't who he seemed. His communications revealed that he had once been trusted by Leo Beck and had also been Martha's lover. The fire at the arms factory was a tangled web of lies consumed by flames. Freddy Riley may have faced his reckoning, but I doubt it will ever be enough to erase the debts and compromises that defined his life.
Freddy Riley
When speaking of Freddy Riley, both "dishonest" and "ruthless" seem fitting descriptors—perhaps that's why the term "lover" stands out so sharply amid his other characteristics. How can such a devious and merciless individual know "love"? How does someone who values their own desires above all else associate with a term that suggests selflessness?
To truly understand what shaped Freddy Riley, an exploration of his family history seems like a logical starting point. I resolved to meet "Kane Riley," the father mentioned in Freddy's will. The meeting, held at a restaurant in Lancaster, unfolded without the expected complications. I explained my intention to investigate Freddy's disappearance and requested Mr. Kane's assistance. What struck me was the unsettling indifference of the elderly man toward the possibility of Freddy's death—a stark contrast to his otherwise respectable demeanor.
From our conversation, I learned that the Riley family had been involved in transportation, though Mr. Kane had never managed to build a successful business. He revealed that Freddy, since childhood, had been driven to win at any cost, fueled by a constant dissatisfaction with his surroundings. Mr. Kane viewed Freddy as a failure, unable to meet the family's expectations despite their considerable investments in him.
("The key to consolidating one's position is exploitation, regardless of how you interpret the word. There's no shame in recognizing this truth. Some are simply born to be devoured, and those who fail should understand this best."
"If you could see things from my perspective, I'm sure it would all make sense. The things Freddy did in the end were disgraceful. He allowed himself to be consumed by fleeting, shameful desires, abandoning both his intellect and his career. I'd rather believe he lost his sanity entirely. You should understand where the Riley family stands—especially considering your line of work, should you decide to make this information public.")
I suggested looking into Freddy's personal communications and belongings—those that had been either returned or discarded. There was a noticeable disdain in Mr. Kane's voice, but he did not prevent me. His only caution was to ensure that certain "unnecessary details" never reached the press.
The personal items I uncovered proved crucial in piecing together Freddy Riley's earlier life. They revealed that Freddy had once harbored scholarly ambitions, an aspect of his character I find difficult to dismiss as mere affectation. His books showed signs of deep engagement: dog-eared pages, underlined passages, and marginal notes, including a critique of Wagner's opera on love and deception. These were no mere decorative objects.
One particular text on legal philosophy explored the themes of "justice" and the "application of law." It appeared to be from Freddy's student days, and his annotations suggest that he viewed the law primarily as a career and tool, rather than an ideological pursuit. Freddy clearly had little patience for some of the professional discourses he encountered, particularly one critique of incompetent lawyers who, in his view, focused solely on their own interests rather than on the judicial purpose of the law.
These notes leave me wondering: Can someone so consumed by self-interest, hatred, vanity, and greed ever truly contemplate justice? Freddy knew that law is not the same as justice. Yet, despite his distaste for the system, Freddy never sought to reform it. Perhaps what appealed to him most was the disparity of information and the power to manipulate outcomes at his will.
The next phase of my investigation led me to Freddy's time at the Keogh & Barriere law firm. There, Freddy was not on equal footing with the seasoned "sons of Themis." As an intern, he was often relegated to menial tasks due to his lack of status and connections. Yet, on the rare occasion he attended court hearings, he would prepare materials far more extensive than necessary for a typical case. Based on Mr. Kane's insights and certain personal items, I'm inclined to think that Freddy's youth was defined by a willingness to pay any price—his own soul or others'—to achieve his goals. His intellect, though sharp, often lacked a moral compass, bending in the face of convenience. When the stakes were high, Freddy would make bold decisions without a second thought.
This extremity of character initially worked in Freddy's favor, helping him earn his legal qualifications. However, it eventually led to his downfall. His unprofessional behavior, coupled with his improper social conduct, cost him a partnership at the firm. And, of course, the tragedy of his affair with Martha added to the bitter consequences.
I found myself questioning Mr. Kane: How could he recall key moments in his son's professional journey yet remain utterly silent when it came to Freddy's emotional life?
("I have little more to say—marriage is just an act of living together, sharing both suffering and prosperity. Its main purpose is to mitigate risk, and that's all. This is why I say Freddy nearly became a madman in the end.")
The remaining letters were opened and read. Some were filled with emotional confessions, their content disconnected from the practical realities of life. Freddy occasionally referenced books he had read, including a sonnet labeled "112." What struck me was that, in these letters, Freddy did not completely mask the negative aspects of his love. His rhetorical skills were sharp enough to craft a flawless image of himself, but he did not fully conceal his bitterness and resentment.
When faced with materials driven by emotion, a brief summary often distorts the finer details. It's far more objective to present them as they are.
("I once wondered whether a more peaceful marriage might have suited you better, but I couldn't bear to see it. It's undoubtedly not a just or respectable request from any practical standpoint, but I remain indifferent. When love destroyed me, all I felt was hatred, bitterness, scorn, and humiliation.
You know I am no stranger to deceit, but I will offer you the loyalty of a liar. Perhaps even a blade capable of ruining me at any moment, along with every ounce of freedom I can give—will that satisfy you?
Martha, what I mean to say is that love is not about unceasing patience, or running from jealousy, or enduring without complaint.
Whatever answer you may offer, please understand this—from the moment I first saw you, I was already wounded beyond healing.")
Lastly, I came across a card signed by Freddy, assuring Martha's "good behavior" and granting her permission to visit the museum. Perhaps Martha never took such rules seriously, and Freddy eventually destroyed the card. Given the timing, it seems likely that this was just before she resolved to leave.

Compiled Overview
Background
Freddy Riley was a lawyer who specialized in Financial Advisement for business owners, and would wear the façade of a reliable and hardworking man in order to attract promising clients. In his search for profit he became connected with one Leo Beck who owned a textile factory.[13] After meeting Leo's wife Martha, Freddy believed they were destined to be together, and began to court her with love letters secretly while outwardly forming not only a business relationship but a friendship with Leo. Freddy had a strong enough relationship with Leo that he was invited to the birthday of their daughter, Lisa Beck. However, in order to obtain what he wanted, he convinced Leo Beck to invest in the Minerva Arms Factory, which put the man in immense debt, and drove a wedge into his relationship with his wife. After an argument about the factory, Martha left Leo to be with Freddy, and Lisa was put into an orphanage. Leo's factory burnt down with him inside of it, and Freddy believed he had finally obtained all of his desires as he married Martha. However, such an ideal life did not last.
Martha soon became pregnant with Freddy's child, another girl which they planned to name Annecy.[14] Unfortunately, his schemes came to light after the factory burned down, and upon reading the newspaper Martha finds out that the Arms Factory would only had been bought by Leo because Freddy had convinced him to, as "even the dumbest person knows not to spend money on extra debts" such as came with that factory. Saying that she was going to the orphanage to retrieve Lisa, and that she would rename Annecy, she left Freddy. While away from him she was treated by a doctor named Lydia Jones at her clinic, but due to excessive bleeding during surgery that could not be stopped, both Martha and Annecy die. Trying to find his wife, Freddy discovered her death and was determined to find the "butcher"[15] who killed his wife, eventually leading him to participate in a strange Game at the distant Oletus Manor.
Events at the Manor
Freddy was the third one to arrive at the Manor. On July 6th, 1899, Emma Woods asked Freddy to stop express negative attitude against Kreacher Pierson, but Freddy refused as he said that Kreacher was like a cockroach.[16] At the dining table, Freddy and Emma realized that there was still an unarrived person whose name is Emily Dyer. Kreacher then stole his tableware and mocked him, which irritated Freddy. Realizing there was no one in the Kitchen to cook for them, Freddy went to the entryway to turn on the valves in the Kitchen by lockpicking the panel. After turning on the leftmost valve, Freddy returned to the Dining Room by the time everyone had left, then got attacked by a punisher.[17] Initially, Freddy would be punished by eradication, but his personality and capability of the experiment left the Manor no choice but to keep him alive. Moreover, they couldn't find a suitable alternative subject for the current group, which made Freddy a must in the experiment.[18]
On July 7th, a day after the punishment, while waiting for Emma at the Entrance Hall, Emily Dyer arrived at the Manor and Freddy was the first one to meet her. He told Emily to go see Emma to show her the way to her room. Freddy then started to investigate more about the Manor while trying not to be noticed and punished again. He went to the Garden and touched the leaves of purple flowers. Emma suddenly approached him and said that those would leave curfews on his hands, while Freddy believed that it wouldn't do anything. But soon, he started to feel that the oil from the plants was on his hands.[19]
On July 11th, Freddy went to the Dining Room to greet everyone except for Kreacher, trying to get better acquaintance before the Manor Game started. Later on, they noticed a strange "blueberry" pie on the dining table. Emma and Emily knew that the pie actually contained belladonna, which would leave an oily residue on the skin if touched and cause an allergic reaction. Kreacher then asked everyone to show their hands. Freddy became shortly suspected as his hands were ulcered, but Emma and Emily later stated that he didn't know about belladonna so he couldn't be the one who made the pie. Freddy started to question himself about the food at the Manor.[20]
On July 12th, a day before the Manor Game started, Freddy overheard the conversation between Emma and Emily. He snuck into Emily's room by picking the lock while avoiding their sight. He then investigated Emily's diary and found out that her former identity was Lydia Jones, the one who failed to stop Martha's excessive bleeding during surgery which led to the deaths of both Martha and Annecy. He instantly considered Emily as his target in the upcoming Manor Game.[21]
On July 13th, the Manor Game started. Freddy tricked Emily into following him by saying that he would ensure victory for both of them in trade of Emily's prioritized protection for him. They then went to a abandoned factory to search for useful items. Emily started to feel related to the factory and its name. The two then heard a strange noise outside the building, and Freddy then demanded Emily to check on the noise. Shortly after, both of them were caught and slain by Hell Ember.[22][MG 6]
Alternate Theories and Conclusions
- Freddy's plan was likely to kill Emily and die with her, as mentioned in his last diary pages: "It's almost over, this long, gloomy journey. Martha. See you in hell."

Manor Game Table References
- ↑ The Diary segments for Emma Woods and Emily Dyer shows them accessing and exploring the Arms Factory. It is however implied that this version is actually a copy of the original Minerva Arms Factory. Freddy Riley mentions during Doctor's Diary segment that he believes Arms Factory to be a replica of the original Minerva Armory.
Alice DeRoss also mentions in Hell Ember's 6th Character Day Letter, Leo Beck: Investigation FieldNotes[sic] I, that: "When I arrived at the "Minerva Factory," once a beacon of hope but now defunct, I found it had long since been replaced by new shops."
This implies the original Minerva Arms Factory had long since been demolished and replaced with new buildings. - ↑ The Diary segments for Emma Woods and Emily Dyer show them access Arms Factory, beginning their Manor Game, on July 13th.
- ↑ As Emma Woods' age is listed as 22 years old in her Relations Menu, this can be assumed to be the age at which her Manor game took place. We can determine her birth date to be December 21st, 1876 due to the conclusion of Lawyer's 6th Deduction Quest, Troublemaker, mentioning: "A letter: Leo Beck and Martha Beck invite Freddy to attend Lisa's first birthday party on December 21st, 1877."
This implies that Lisa was born a year earlier, on the same date in 1876. This would place a 22 years old Emma involved in the Manor game that took place in July in the year 1899. - ↑ It should be noted that Hell Ember's serial number is different from those of other subjects in most of the Manor Games, possibly because it was assigned by B.A. and the other experiment staff at Sacred Heart Hospital rather than the usual authors of the other experiment files. It is further implied B.A. assigned Leo his serial number in Hell Ember's 3rd Character Day Letter, A case review file left behind in the Sacred Heart Hospital, where B.A: mentions: "Perhaps I shouldn't have named an experimental subject. After December 21, "Cinder" will simply be Subject No. 1-12-22-13."
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 Emily Dyer is shown being attacked by Hell Ember in her Diary segments, leading to her elimination.
Lawyer's 2023 Birthday Event questions mention that: "Question 5: "Whose elimination was closely linked to Freddy Riley?" ", with the correct answer being the option: "Emily Dyer" - ↑ 6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 6.4 Emma Woods appears to be the only survivor of the "Thistle Thorn" Manor game. She mentions in Gardener's 4th Birthday Letter, A Letter Attached with Dried Thistle and Without Recipient Information, that: "My new friends in this group warned me in secret to keep a record of everything, just in case my memories would start to deceive me."
This shows that Emma survived the experiment and fled Arms Factory, leading to her immediate inclusion into another test group which didn't include her past teammates.
Later in the same letter, she also mentions that: "Yes, I've won the previous round, for now [...]" - ↑ It's implied that Hell Ember spared Emma's life once he recognized her, despite the heavy behavioral drugs he was subjected to, and allowed her to escape the Arms Factory. Emma Woods mentions in Gardener's 4th Birthday Letter, A Letter Attached with Dried Thistle and Without Recipient Information, in regards to her interaction with Hell Ember: "Lisa, Lisa... I don't know why, but writing this name makes my eyes sting.
Maybe that weirdo knows me, but I'm unable to place him in any of my puzzle pieces."
An un unknown author mentions in Hell Ember's 4th Character Day Letter, Message Hidden Inside the Wooden Box Transported in Secret to Sacred Heart Hospital, that: "Subject 1-12-22-13's self-awareness broke free of the memory blockade at the end of the experiment, and Subject 1-12-22-13 regained some emotion as a result of Subject 4-1-1's provocation."
Alice DeRoss mentions in Hell Ember's 6th Character Day Letter, Leo Beck: Investigation FieldNotes[sic] I, in regards to the experimentation staff: "The reports highlight a particularly striking incident: all drug control measures failed to affect him." - ↑ 8.0 8.1 Kreacher Pierson is shown being burnt alive while inside of Mr. Skelkro by Emma Woods in her Diary segments, leading to his elimination.
An unknown author mentions in Thief's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Kreacher Pierson's Experiment File, that: "4-0-2 was the first subject to be eliminated from the game. He was immobilized by Subject 4-1-1's trap in the manor."
An unknown author mentions in Gardener's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Emma Woods' Experiment File, in regards to Kreacher Pierson that: "In contrast, during this process, Subject 4-1-1 persisted in her revenge plan against Subject 4-0-2. In the game, Subject 4-1-1 burned the scarecrow to symbolize her revenge." - ↑ An unknown author mentions in Lawyer's 3rd Birthday Letter, A Page from Freddy Riley's Experiment File, in regards to Freddy Riley that: "[...] but this behavioral characteristic was limited to his exchanges with No. 4-0-4, making him less careful against the deadlier threat."
The wording implies that his careful attitude lessened once Emily Dyer had been eliminated, causing him to fall victim to Hell Ember.
