Gilt bronze clock with a country scene and water automaton
Wheels, sailboats, verdant waters, and poultry—the exquisite decoration blends with European watercraft techniques, creating a fairytale-like miniature English countryside scene frozen in time with the hands. In the 18th century, a period of frequent cultural exchange between China and the West, clocks, as representatives of Western wonders, were presented to China as rare and exotic objects by visitors. They were deeply appreciated by the emperor and became an important means for the Chinese people of the time to understand Western culture.[2]

Trivia[]
- This costume is based on the "gilt bronze clock with a country scene and water automaton" (铜镀金乡村景色水法钟) on display at the Palace Museum in Beijing, China.[3] The gilt bronze clock is from the Qianlong Emperor's reign during the Qing Dynasty, it was a tribute gifted to the Emperor by Britain.[4]
- It is a beautiful clock known for it's exquisite appearance and intricate mechanisms. After activating, music would play, the water-simulating glass rods revolve, and the animal figures would move. It took Wang Jin, Palace Museum's clock conservator, almost a year to fully restore the gilt bronze clock’s original appearance and functions.[5]
