Martha Remington is the ex-wife of both Leo Beck, the Hell Ember and Freddy Riley, the Lawyer, and the mother of both Emma Woods, the Gardener (formerly known as Lisa Beck) and Annecy Riley.
Compiled Overview[]
Martha Remington married Leo Beck on March 14th, 1874.[1] Two years later Martha gave birth to a daughter on December 21st, 1876, who they named Lisa Beck. For a time they were a happy and stable family.
During the early years of their marriage, Leo's textile factory didn't seem to do well. Not having a head for money himself, Leo hired a lawyer, Freddy Riley for financial advice. Freddy immediately fell in love with Martha as soon as he saw her and began to court her, despite her being married to Leo. As part of his scheme, Freddy fostered a close friendship with Leo and was even invited to Lisa's first birthday party in 1877.[2]
When her husband, Leo was thinking of buying the Minerva Arms Factory as an investment based on Freddy's suggestion, but Martha got into an argument with him, warning him that this is terrible investment, as she reasoned "Competitions among weaving factories are fierce, I know. But please, believe me, rifles are no 'daily necessities'."[3] This argument starts a rift between their relationship as Leo ignores her advice and suffers the consequence from debt. As Leo also began to turn to alcoholism,[4] their relationship deteriorated even further. She steadily became more intimate with Freddy, who continued to send her love letters.
Martha eventually left the debt-ridden Leo Beck and accepted Freddy's marriage proposal, moving in with him on White Sand Street, while Lisa was left in an orphanage. While married to Freddy, Martha became pregnant with another daughter whom they planned to name Annecy. While pregnant, she attended a particular hospital that Freddy had invested in, and began to get anxious and paranoid.[5] However, when the Minerva Arms Factory burned down, it was reported in the newspapers, along with the detail that Leo had bought the factory while it had a massive debt. She quickly realized that Freddy exploited Leo's lack of investment experience and talked him into purchasing it, as "even the dumbest person knows not to spend money on extra debts."[6]
With this revelation of Freddy's schemes, Martha left him with a single letter and didn't tell him where she was going to. However, while undergoing an illegal surgery by Doctor Lydia Jones, Martha experienced excessive bleeding that could not be stopped which caused her death. After the death of her patient, Lydia Jones fled the clinic, leaving the body to be discovered by police later.[7]
Alternative Theories and Conclusions[]
- She seems to be an educated woman in regards to finances as she was the only one to advise Leo Beck against buying the Arms Factory, and later understood what the amount of debt attached to it meant and what Freddy had done to her ex-husband.
- She did not immediately inform Leo while she was married to him that Freddy was courting her and sending her love letters.
- In most theories, the surgery is thought to be an abortion, while in others it was an experimental operation in general, perhaps relating to a difficult birth while going into labor. However, in Lawyer's 2020 Letter she said that Annecy would grow up with Lisa and become an honest person, which means at that time she was not planning to get an abortion. It is still possible that she changed her mind later and chose to abort.
