Mary de Capet, formerly Mary Kreiburg, was the wife of Manus de Capet, the former owner of Oletus Manor, 10 years prior to Ashes of Memory.
Appearance[]
Mary is a young woman with medium length white hair and blue eyes. She seems to favor red clothing and is often wearing a red dress. At the racecourse, Mary is also wearing a red hat with a purple flower on it.
Compiled Overview[]
Mary Kreiburg was a noblewoman from Austria born into the Kreiburg Family. At some point, Manus de Capet, a wealthy and renowned Irish nobleman, met her and fell in love. The two would wed shortly afterwards with Mary taking his last name and going to live with him at his home, Oletus Manor in Scotland. Shortly after the marriage, Mary fell into a depression, allegedly due to the lack of social venues. In an effort to make her happy, Manus built Mary the Kreiburg Racecourse, naming it after her maiden name. The racecourse became popular and was hailed as one of the most popular events in town.
While Mary seemed thrilled about it at first, rumors began to circulate about her having an affair with a jockey due to a cornflower symbolizing a happy encounter. At this time, the townspeople use it as ironclad evidence to slander their relationship. Her portrayal as a figure of much-publicized romantic notoriety would soon appear in a novel called The White Steed of Death. The novel features a heroine whose story closely mirrors Mary's, implying that the character was inspired by the dramatic fate of a famous Queen of France and slandering her personal life.[1] At some point, it was published in the newspapers, both in English by the London paper and in French by La Revue de Paris. It was well received by both markets and began to damage her reputation.
This story's defamation would culminate her to become increasingly distressed despite the racecourse's success. The Kreiburg family tried to protect her image by interfering the publication.[2] However, Mary ended up committing suicide, hanging herself on the racecourse. There were theories that the rumors about the scandal lead her to end her life. Others theorized that it wasn't a suicide but in fact a murder covered up.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]

- It has been speculated that Mary is directly related to Frederick, being his sister, cousin, or aunt.
- In his dialogue, Frederick is implied to have known Mary when she was young, mentioning the things she liked then.
- Mary could be the sender of the letter mentioned in Frederick's 9th Deduction Quest: D.C.

- The design of Promised Day resembles that of Mary De Capet's wedding dress. The costume also includes cornflowers, which is a symbol of the Kreiburg Family.
- Mary de Capet appears in Ashes of Memory Episode 2 in the form of the Bloody Queen, supporting this conclusion.
- Given she is a Kreiburg, it is possible Mary has a talent for music. The Bloody Queen enjoys playing the harp, so the same could be the case for Mary de Capet.
