Max is the ringleader of a freak show who took in Violetta as a baby.

Appearance[]

Max is described as a man wearing a top hat.[1]

Compiled Overview[]

Max was the ringleader of a traveling freak show. However, this show was a front allowing Max to run a human trafficking ring. He would target individuals with physical or mental disabilities, recruiting them only to sell them to other circuses, black markets, or other groups.[2]

One day, after a performance, a limbless baby was left under a seat.[3] Max, seeing the potential money he could make from such a child, took in the baby, naming her Violetta. As she grew up, Violetta saw Max as a father figure, regardless of his true feelings towards her.[1] Max let her live in a cabin, advertising her as a "cross between a penguin and a man".[4] People initially flocked to the cabin to see her, making him a lot of money.[5] However, after some time, people became bored and the audience dwindled. In an attempt to get people to show back up, Max began making Violetta roll on a ball, but that didn't work.[6] Desperate for her father's praise, Violetta began trying out new things to try and get people to show back up.[7] Max didn't let her try anything out of the ordinary as he saw no point in it.[8] In the end, Max would sell her to Bernard, not even watching her be driven away.[9][10]

Sometime later, a performer named Merrick couldn't handle the humiliation he was experiencing and attempted to murder Max by stabbing him with a sewing needle. Unfortunately, Max survived the attempted and vowed to get revenge. However, through the stabbing incident, Max's human trafficking and abuse came to light, getting the police involved.[2]

Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]

  • Despite how he viewed her, Violetta was appreciative that Max saw her the same as he saw everyone else, not as a freak or something to be coddled.[11]
  • Max may be an alcoholic given the constant mention of him with alcoholic beverages in Violetta's letters.
    • He may have spent the money he got from his freak show on alcohol instead of supplies for the performers given the mentions of financial trouble.[10]
  • In The Breaking Wheel's Relations Menu, it is shown that Max had "invited" the brothers to something. This could imply he was the writer of the invitation the brothers were sent.[12]
    • In Violetta's 2025 letter, Max was shown to have been inspired by a popular performance the brothers had put on. It is possible he invited them sometime after that.
