Naib Subedar[1] or नायब सुभेदार, also known as the Mercenary, is one of the 50 playable Survivors added to Identity V.
This page is a compilation of lore and story content for this character.
Backstory[]
Character Introduction[]
Naib was once a Gurkha mercenary who worked for an East Indian company. Like most Gurkhas, he is neither tall nor physically strong. But Gurkha warriors stand for discipline and bravery. As a retired mercenary, Naib Subedar is used to making a living by killing. Can a dangerous game offer him the same experience as the battlefield?[6]
Character Relations Menu[]
Naib was a Gurkha mercenary working for the East India Company. Despite his slight frame and unimposing build, he is disciplined and brave, marking him out as an exceptional soldier.
Being a retired mercenary, Naib Subedar is used to living a dangerous life. Maybe this game of survival can finally give him the same thrill he once experienced on the battlefield?
Announcement Backstory[]
Although not tall and physically strong, Naib is like most Gurkhas, and the rugged terrain has trained their strong body and indomitable spirit. Naib used to be a mercenary for the East India Company, but because he believed in the idea of equality for human beings, his dislike of war reached its peak and refused to sell for the British. He then became a free mercenary, but has long since left his bloodthirsty life after retirement. Perhaps a dangerous game can give him the same experience as the battlefield?[7]
Extended Backstory[]
Naib is a Gurkha from Nepal. Because the area is extremely poor, he had no choice but to become a mercenary for a living, and started to live a dangerous life.
Slowly, Naib started becoming tired of a life led by bloodthirsty wars, but he was forced to continue tolerating it as part of his livelihood.
Until one day, due to a mission requirement, Naib had to swing the scimitar that resembled the pride of the Gurkhas towards his own citizens.
When both of his hands were stained with the fresh blood of his compatriots, he finally exploded, and chose to become a "deserter".
Naib's clothing is also relevant to his identity.
Due to his identity as a mercenary, Naib usually wears dark colored shirts, with lightweight and tight fitting materials, which make it convenient to carry out various missions.
To disguise his identity, Naib chose to wear a hood to hide his real face under a shadow, along with his inner life.[8]
Deduction Quests[]

Two Pages from Naib Subedar's Experiment File (2022)[]
Serial No. 9-?-3
Name: Naib Subedar
[Test Indicators]
1. Outlaw
2. Lawbreaker
[Inclination]
Proficient hunter and out-of-control test subject.
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation
Subject 9-?-3 is physically and mentally strong, and the most dangerous subject in this group. He came all the way here to hunt down and kill Subject 8-?-5, and he eliminated anyone who got in his way. Subject 9-?-3 ignored the rules before the game even began. He distracted the entire group and was severely punished for his actions.
2. Methodology
Subject 9-?-3 is a freelance mercenary, so unlike the other participants, he showed no interested in the game itself, and everything he did was to guarantee the success of his mission.
After he dealt with Subject 8-?-5, he eliminated Subject 9-?-1 in fear of exposing his plan. He then tricked Subject 9-?-2 into working with him and eliminated Subject 9-?-4. Two of this group's test subject were eliminated before the game even began, breaking the "4-Man Game" rule, and ultimately causing the game end prematurely. The speed at which Subject 9-?-3 worked far surpassed our initial evaluation of his behavior. He eliminated anyone who stood in his way, an outlaw through and through. Subject 9-?-3 caused unexpected developments in the experiment, causing the entire experiment to go awry. Executioners will be sent after Subject 9-?-3 once the experiment is over, and his accomplice, Subject 9-?-2, will also pay the price.
3. Experiment Summary
As a former mercenary and freelance mercenary now, Subject 9-?-3 has clear goals and is psychologically strong. He took control of everything, and the fighting pit became his personal hunting ground. Even if the final test results were not ideal, the experience from this group could be summarized as follows: Subjects with differences can lead to even more possibilities, but if their differences are too significant, they're not suitable to be placed in the same game. The controllability of subjects should be carefully evaluated when selecting test subjects.
Attachment: Follow-Up Records
As one of the few test subjects brought back by the executioner, additional discoveries were made from Subject 9-?-3 after the experiment.
Subject 9-?-3 was carrying a letter which we suspect to be for the person assisting him. Combined with our investigation on Subject 9-?-3, the content of the letter was determined to be related to his experiences. Subject 9-?-3 was raised in poverty, and his father passed away early. Once an adult, Subject 9-?-3 became a mercenary, and he became the main provider for his family. Such experiences are common in his hometown: Life forces people to live as outlaws that gradually escalate to killings to escape poverty.
Two very interesting behaviors can be observed from Subject 9-?-3: On one hand, he eliminated all who stood in his way without the slightest hesitation; on the other hand, he wrote a final letter to his family while on the brink of desperation. Should I say the conscience of a vicious person can be awakened by desperation at death's door, or perhaps his love for his family kept him going and awake through all the killing?
Many "evil" specimens have been recorded throughout the experiment. Some of them are dangerous, conflicted, and interesting. Perhaps they can be put into the game once more, integrated, and researched further...
Attachments in 9-?-3's File (2023)[]
(The attachments include a stained note with bloodstains on it and a description of the attachments.)
Note:
(Hastily written with a pen)
I know everything, and I know you're watching.
If this is what you want, then I refuse to uphold this ridiculous rule, not even in the end.
Description:
(Neatly written with a pen)
This attachment was discovered in Processing Room 4 and is suspected to have been written by Subject 9-?-3.
After retrieving the test subject, Subject 9-?-3 refused subsequent processing and displayed extreme aggression.
On the afternoon of December 15th, the executioner sent to move the test subject found Subject 9-?-3 missing and discovered this note in the processing room.
During subsequent investigations, traces of Subject 9-?-3 were discovered throughout the Manor. However, his whereabouts remain unknown. External personnel may be brought in to assist in the investigation.
Naib Subedar: Investigation Field Notes I (2025)[]
The search for the missing Naib Subedar was anything but straightforward. Aside from learning that he was a freelance Gurkha mercenary hailing from Kathmandu, I knew next to nothing about this elusive and cautious Gurkha. The breakthrough came unexpectedly, in the form of an unclaimed letter addressed to none other than Naib Subedar himself.
After obtaining the address, 227A Oak Street, from a contact at the post office, I hurried over without delay, ringing the bell just as dusk settled over the city. The door was answered by an irritable elderly woman, who, upon hearing the name I was seeking, shook her head in clear annoyance.
"Never heard of anyone by that name living here," she snapped, about to slam the door in my face. Just then, a man reeking of cheap whiskey staggered down the stairs and wedged himself in the doorway. Scars crisscrossed his face and arms, lending him a menacing air. "Who did you say you were looking for?" he slurred.
"God, you stink, Alger! If you keep drinking like this, you can pack your bags and leave!" the landlady spat, turning away in disgust. Before disappearing, she jabbed a bony finger at his nose. "And don't forget this month's rent, you penniless Gurkha!"
I seized the moment. "I'm looking for Naib Subedar. Are you from his hometown?" I sensed this hulking man might be the lead I needed. But Alger, still swaying from drink, simply stared at me, waiting for me to show my hand. Running out of patience, I revealed my identity as a journalist and explained my purpose. "Help me, and I'll tell you... what you want to know." Alger replied, belching out a foul cloud of whiskey breath.
Over the next few days, I escorted Alger across factories and docks, trying to help him find work. His history of brawling and time behind bars made most employers wary, but eventually, I secured him a decent position at a foundry manufacturing firearm parts for large corporations. They happened to need an armory supervisor, and Alger's years as a mercenary fit the bill.
Once settled into his new job, Alger finally agreed to talk about Naib Subedar. We arranged to meet at a tavern in a back alley. "So, what are you writing this time? Going to call us deserters or murderers?" Alger grumbled as he cracked open a bottle of rum. He showed no gratitude for my recent efforts and seemed almost hostile to my profession.
Yet, for all his bluster, Alger was a man of his word. After a few drinks, he began to answer my questions, and I gradually pieced together fragments of Naib's story.
Naib was born in a small village west of Kathmandu, the same region as Alger. It was a war-scarred, impoverished place, with little in the way of modern conveniences or economic opportunity. Most young men left to seek their fortunes elsewhere—Naib among them.
Like many Gurkha youths raised scrambling over mountains, Naib developed a resilient and agile physique. After a grueling selection process and harsh training, he joined a local mercenary unit, where he first met Alger, who had enlisted some years earlier. At first, Alger barely noticed the quiet newcomer. In a crowd of burly mercenaries, Naib was unremarkable in appearance and kept mostly to himself, often sitting by the fire, meticulously cleaning his curved kukri blade.
But once on the battlefield, Naib's wolf-like ferocity struck fear into the enemy. Alger vividly recalled a raid five years ago: he'd stepped on a homemade landmine and shattered his leg. With chaos all around, it was Naib who silently dragged him from beneath a collapsed mud wall. Later, as they hid in the jungle, two enemy soldiers came searching.
"I figured if we could just stay hidden, we'd make it out alive. But Naib circled behind them—slit one's throat in an instant. The other tried to raise his gun, but Naib kicked it away and snapped his neck, like breaking a dead branch. No hesitation," Alger recounted, his eyes haunted by the memory. "He saved me again, but at that moment, he seemed more beast than man—cold, efficient, merciless." Alger glanced at the scars on his arm, then let out a bitter laugh. "Later, I realized how foolish that thought was. On the battlefield, you're just meat for the wolves. Maybe those bastards were right—survivors like us, we're all monsters inside."
I could not pretend to understand Alger's pain. Such brutality is beyond the experience of ordinary people. So I simply listened as he continued.
"Because of my leg, I left the unit soon after and lost touch with Naib. I found work on the docks, and life finally settled down. That's when I ran into him again." According to Alger, Naib had chosen to leave the mercenary life behind and strike out alone in London. Surviving in this steel city was no easier than on the battlefield, but Alger possessed a bit more street smarts.
Leveraging his connections, Alger found Naib some well-paid, "clean" jobs. He didn't elaborate, but I could guess the nature of such work. Wounds and trauma limited Alger's prospects and snuffed out his youthful ambitions. Naib, though physically unscathed, could only put his formidable skills to use in the shadows.
Yet, both men seemed strangely content. "Life's tough now, but neither of us would go back to the old ways. To those high-and-mighty officers, we were just obedient dogs—our only value was following orders. Otherwise, we were expendable." Alger spat on the floor, flicking his lighter repeatedly. The flame cast a flickering glow in his palm. "You may not understand, but freedom is worth more than anything, Miss Journalist," he said, giving me a look I couldn't quite decipher.
To facilitate their side jobs, Alger rented a small attic in London's East End. Though Naib was often away on assignments, he always sent his share of the rent on time. Over time, even the landlady assumed Alger lived alone, but the two men grew closer in their sporadic cohabitation.
"Naib hardly talks, and he's always out working. Even when at home, he keeps to himself. It took me half a year to realize we were from the same village. Every month, we'd send money home separately, wasting postage that could've bought a dozen bottles of rum. After that, I always paid the postage when we sent things together, not out of generosity, but because I never wanted to owe that man another debt. I can never repay what he did for me, not in a lifetime," Alger said, taking another long swig as if to wash down a lump in his throat—perhaps guilt.
The last job Naib accepted before vanishing was a routine assignment. Before leaving, he handed Alger an oilskin bundle containing his advance payment and three letters for home.
"Send these for me, same as always—one each month. Don't let my mother know I'm gone," Naib instructed, careful and concise as ever. He left without looking back, but Alger felt a strange sense of foreboding. He waited anxiously for three months, but Naib never returned. That was all Alger could tell me.
Closing my notebook, I asked one final question before leaving the tavern.
"Do you think Naib is still alive?"
Alger drained the last dregs of his drink and slumped over the bar like a discarded rag.
"I... made a bet with the others once... If only one man could survive the battlefield, who would it be?" His words, thick with drink, faded into a snore. But I caught the name clearly.
"Naib Subedar... Only him."

Compiled Overview[]
Background[]
Naib was born in a small village west of Kathmandu. During childhood, he was raised in poverty and suffered from food insecurity.[19] Naib's father died when he was young, causing him to have to become the main provider in his household.[20] As a young man, he joined the East India Company, with a photo of his mother being one of his few possessions.[21] During the beginning of his mercenary career, he made friends, choosing weapons together and even growing close enough to refer to them as his "brothers in arms". He trained hard as a Gurkha, learning many combat techniques. After a grueling selection process and harsh training, Naib met a comrade named Alger in a local mercenary unit.[22]
While quiet and often by himself, Naib’s wolf-like ferocity and instincts strike fear in his enemies across the battlefield. During raid mission, Alger’s leg was injured by a homemade landmine and falls unconscious, leaving Naib to drag him from beneath a collapsed mud wall. As they both hid in the jungle to make it out alive, two enemy soldiers came searching for both of them. At that moment, Naib mercilessly slit one soldier’s throat from behind in an instant and kicked the second one’s gun away to snap his neck without hesitation before carrying Alger's body to safety once again.
These incidents cause Naib to mull over his life choices, as well as realize that British soldiers are treated much better than their Nepalese counterparts. At some point, one of Naib's fellow soldier left the mercenary life and Naib wistfully imagines what life might be like if he could leave it as well, He also realizes there will be no end to the fighting, and after recovering, they will be forced into battle again. His breaking point is when he is told to "threaten compatriots", likely ordered by the British to subjugate his fellow Nepalese people. He refuses and leaves the military, deciding to retire as a mercenary instead. However, it had already done its damage, as his time in the army had left him with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.[23]
After Naib’s journey to London, he reunited with Alger, who helped Naib find well-paid "clean" jobs. The two men also rented a small attic for both of them in London’s East End such as 227A Oak Street to facilitate their side jobs. While both men seemed strangely content as roommates, Naib would often be away on assignments, but always sends his share of his rent on time and made sure to send money and letters back home to his mother.
Over time, Naib accepted a 'routine assignment' by Arthur Russell (Employed by Mike Morton) to track down the survivors of the Hullabaloo Fire. Before leaving, Naib handed Alger an oilskin bundle containing his advance payment and three letters for home. Without looking back, Naib suddenly vanishes for his three-month travel. During this, Naib locates Murro and follows him to Oletus Manor, proceeding to join the manor games without being invited.
Events at the Manor[]
Naib was the fourth participant in his Group to arrive at the Manor, before Servais Le Roy's arrival as a replacement for the missing Murro Morton. At some point before December 5th, Naib silently murdered Murro and hid his body inside the corpse of the Wildling Companion and buried them outside the Manor.
On the midnight of December 3rd, Naib went outside the Manor to check on Murro's burial and discovered a sounder of boars surrounding the site. Naib did not want the boars to attract attention to the remaining participants and went back to the Manor to retrieve bait for the boars to lead them away from the burial site. He quickly dug up the dead boar, along with Murro, with the shovel. He retrieved the corpse and quickly hid it in the Garden for awhile until the coast was clear. He then went back to fill in the hole, but was almost caught by Kurt Frank, who was also investigating Murro's sudden disappearance in question, and hid behind a tree. Naib was wondering what Kurt had seen, then turned his head and saw "Deer Man" observing the two. Despite that, his mission turned out as planned. Later on, Naib moved the boar's body to the Kitchen as its new hiding place.[24][25]
On December 5th, Naib tried to divert the participants' attention away from inspecting Murro's death and rigged the crime scene in 1F02 to make it look like Murro had escaped through the window. Naib lied to William Ellis that Murro had gone "missing" and that the two of them should look for clues in his room, 1F02. They looked outside the window and they saw footprints in the snow. Naib persuaded William to believe that those footprints were proof of Murro's escape. The newly arrived participant, Servais Le Roy, then entered the room and asked where Murro was. Naib replied by saying that Murro must have escaped through the window, while Servais questioned the strange situation as Murro couldn't survive in the snowy forest alone. Both William and Naib got out of the room, not realizing that Servais started his own investigation and came to the conclusion that Murro couldn't have escaped because the window's latch was broken.[26][27]
On December 6th, Naib decided that it was time to relocate the dead boar, as its decomposition would expose his mission. Servais then entered the Kitchen while Naib was ready to move the dead boar. Naib demanded Servais to leave as he dragged the corpse outside, but Servais interrupted and questioned him. Naib said that the boar could have rotted due to the warm temperature in the Manor as Servais continued to pester him. Naib ignored Servais and continued dragging the boar outside, which triggered Servais's suspicion. Later on, Naib then left and went to the Entrance Hall to try and catch Servais snooping on the dead boar, not knowing that Servais was sneaking behind him. When he came to the porch of the Manor, Servais came after him and asked if he made Murro disappear. Naib refused to answer Servais's query and, before the heated conversation could continue, Kurt Frank interrupted it by saying that he found something and wanted the two to see it. As the three were walking, Kurt told Naib and Servais that he had found Murro's Diary, but to read the diary, they had to finish his upcoming game. Servais then rejected the offer as this would be a waste of his time, slowing down the process of his investigation. Naib, on the other hand, accepted Kurt's game and eventually won, thus getting a chance to read Murro's derelict diary. Naib was horrified with the context of the diary. He hid the diary in the drawer and locked it in to prevent anyone else from discovering the truth, and asked Kurt about the diary to blend in. With some questions remaining mostly about the Deer Man, Naib planned to go outside the Manor to look for him. Later on, Naib encountered Servais waiting for him at the Entrance Hall, and was demanded to tell him what was he doing at night. Naib tried to dodge Servais' questions, but Servais quickly informed Naib about his knowledge of Murro's death, as well as Naib's attempts to hide his body, saying that everyone in this Group had their own missions to complete.[28][29]
On December 7th, Naib saw Servais kicking the dead boar and instantly arrived to tell him to get away, then started praying in front of the boar as Servais frustratingly left. Naib then entered the Dining Room and warned Servais about the consequences if Naib caught him approaching the boar another time, which made Servais extremely irritated.[30]
On December 9th, Naib became more paranoid and started conducting his own investigation on the "Game" they were participating, trying to find the answer for his horrible suspicions. He then discovered one of the drawers where he hid Murro's diary was lockpicked by Kurt. Someone from the previous Group tried to pry open the control valve, a restored handrail that was cut evenly, serving as a pitfall for another participant to fall, a sculpture with a hidden empty drawer, a leftover med-kit covered in dust left by another participant. Naib then left the Manor to check on the dead boar, and as Naib reflected on his investigation, he came to the conclusion that they weren't the first people coming to the Manor with invitations offering tempting "prizes" in trade of their joining the "Game", but he was yet to find out the exact purposes of the so-called "Games". Later on, Naib interviewed his fellow participants on whether they had encountered any strange things happening around the Manor. William said that he found a strange card saying "curiosity killed the cat" and would pass it on to Naib later once he found it. Servais said that the only thing that was strange was his "roommates", including the dead boar Naib was trying to prevent him from inspecting. Kurt told Naib about the Frog Sculpture, and said that he would tell him more about it if Naib agreed to meet him in the Garden. As Naib went back inside the Manor after his interview with Kurt, William passed the card to him as promised. Naib then flipped the card, which said: "As we all know, Diary is a human-made record". Naib then realized that they, along with the previous participants, are set to play the "Games" until their ultimate deaths, as part of the Manor's sick experiment.[31]
On December 10th, Naib caught William near the boar and warned him not to touch it. William apologized and explained that he only wanted a piece of the boar's leg to roast it. Naib then went to the Kitchen to take some tools for butchering, as he had accepted William's request. After obtaining the boar's leg, Naib brought it to the Kitchen, passing by Servais as they crossed eyes with each other. Naib then convinced William not to eat the leg as he thought it was already decomposed, but William said that that would be no problem. Knowing that he couldn't change William's intention, Naib advised William to eat the meat with spice with a glass of wine before leaving the Kitchen.[32] Naib then went to the Garden, ready to hear Kurt talk about his discovery on the strange things he had encountered in the Manor. However, their meeting was postponed upon discovering that William had been poisoned in the Dining Room. Naib quickly alerted Kurt about the incident, who was then able to save William's life by letting him drink saline water, and they carried William to bed to rest.[33]
On December 11th, Naib broke up a fight between Servais and Kurt. Kurt told Naib that Servais was responsible for poisoning William, just like the way he murdered his former teacher, John Henry Anderson. After the dust was settled, Naib and Kurt went to the Garden to have a private conservation without any disturbance this time. Kurt then excitedly told Naib about the story he had just finished writing based on his own experiences in the Manor. After the conversation, Naib silently murdered Kurt out of fear that Kurt's newly written book, "Oletus Mountain Survival Challenge", would compromise Naib's involvement in Murro's death.[34][35]
On December 12th, after inadvertently killing Servais, assumingly in a fight, William nervously called Naib for help. Naib then covered the corpse with a bag and told William that they had to leave the Manor immediately, as the Manor's executioner is coming for them due to the two having broken the rule that prohibits killing an excessive number of participants before the Game's Final Stage. William said that he needed a moment alone, still in shock after causing Servais's death. While Naib was dragging the body in the Dining Room, he heard the knock of the door from outside. Naib initially thought that it was William, but soon came to the conclusion that the executioner, Deer Man, had arrived to punish the two. Naib then snuck behind the hunter and hid inside Room 1F02, waiting until the Deer Man left. When the coast was clear, Naib quickly dragged the body outside before Deer Man returned. After managing to leave the Manor with the body, Naib realized that William was still inside, but before he could enter the Manor again, Bane arrived along with his lethal weapon, leaving Naib no escape this time.[36]
As three test subjects were eliminated before the Game's Final Stage, William and Naib were deemed responsible for breaking the "4-Man Game" rule, thus leading to the Manor's decision to cancel Group 9's Manor Game, which was originally planned to take place on December 19th.[37]
After the experiment, Naib and William were put into Processing Room 4 at the Manor by Bane Perez, the executioner. The Manor then wrote a fake letter to Arthur Russell under the name of Naib Subedar, claiming that Naib's mission was accomplished and demanded Arthur send the payment to his home country at Kathmandu, Nepal to end further communications.[38]
On the afternoon of December 15th, Naib escaped the Processing Room and left a note saying that he refused to follow the absurd rules of the Manor. This led to the Manor's decision to bring additional personnel, as Naib's location in the Manor was unknown, but there was evidence that he was still present. The mentioned personnel could be Burke Lapadura due to his job status as the Manor's Head of Security and his close relationship with Bane Perez.[39][40]
Naib was possibly caught again and executed by Bane as witnessed by William, and William quickly fled to the forest in terror to hide for his life. William was then recovered by Bane and Burke but struggled against them while asking about Naib's whereabouts. It is possible that William was too traumatized to admit Naib's death, or didn't see who exactly was executed.[41]
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- In the story section of UI, Naib has a "Sole Survivor" note marked on his portrait and the only one to do so, implying he might have successfully escaped from the manor.
- If he was caught, Naib might have put into another manor game, similar to Emma Woods, who also possessed a "Sole Survivor" mark and was confirmed to put into a second game after being the sole escapee of her first manor game.
- Naib Subedar Diaries reveal that Naib was caught by Bane after trying to flee along with William on December 12th, but he later escaped the Processing Room three days after his capture, as written in Mercenary's 2023 Letter. However, his Diaries also insist that his sent letter, with the receiver being Arthur Russell, about escaping "Deer Man" was written by someone else, specifically who worked at the Manor.
- Forward's 2023 Letter mentions an execution happened in front of William's face proceeded by Bane, with Naib being the only alive participant aside from Williams at that time, as well as William's eventual imprisonment, thus supports the theory of the Manor maybe faking Naib's letter, hinting at Naib's somber fate.
- Mercenary's 2025 Letter mentions that Naib is living with Alger at the London's East End, and he always pays his share of rent to Alger on time. Naib told Alger that he will be back within 3 Months based on his 3 letters that are sent to his mother once per month, and the advance payments he gave to Alger but as 3 months pass, Naib has not yet to return.

Additionally, both Naib and William, as mentioned earlier, were both caught on December 12th.

- ↑ Assumingly due to Kevin Ayuso's premature escape in the former Group 5's Manor Game, the Manor decided to enhance their defense system, not allowing the same incident to happen again, thus preventing Naib from comprehensively fleeing.
- ↑ Forward's 2023 Letter does confirm that an execution happened right in front of William. However, when William was taken back to the Manor, he still tried to figure out Naib's whereabouts. This leads to two plausible outcomes including both Naib's death and survival.
