Nadia Vasilieva was the mother of Valentina Yaga Vasilieva and her siblings. When eight of her children had been seized by bailiffs due to an unpaid debt from Toflar Vasily's gambling, she was left alone with her daughter. She died at the hands of rioters when protecting Valentina.
Appearance[]
Nadia appears as an elder woman, with short hair that reaches past her neck, bangs parted in the middle, swept to the sides of her face. She typically dons a light headscarf, hanging off at the back of her head. She wears a light shirt with a dark dress on top, with rolled sleeves up to her elbows, and an apron is usually tied around her waist. Before the seperation with her baby, she had a basket tied around her chest with a ribbon on her right shoulder, on which her baby would nap and rest in.
Compiled Overview[]
Nadia, with her husband, Toflar, were a married couple in poverty, with at least 10 children. Their eldest child was Valentina, who was a natural merchant, selling simple items by presenting them as whimsical trinkets.
However, one day Valentina was paid for her products with a peculiar, red gemstone, and shortly after, she began exhibiting signs of rapid aging, with her skin and organs becoming older, causing her to get hospitalized for a period. Around this time, Toflar lost his job, becoming unemployed, which became a concern for his family's income and survival. It appears Nadia either didn't have a job and raised her children, or she did, but didn't make enough alone.
Toflar, likely at a loss, resorted to gambling, possibly believing that luck and fate may help him in regaining the money and saving his family with a fortune, but instead, he lost all of his money and fell into severe debt. A debt notice was sent to him, stating that if he does not repay his debt in seven days, consequences that have been agreed on will occur. During this time, Valentina tried to help her family by selling things in the market, but it was barely ever enough to cover the debt.
Eventually, Toflar took their youngest child, who was just a baby, and left. Not long after, bailiffs came and seized his possessions: his remaining children, excluding Valentina. This left Valentina alone with her mother, in a severe loss of both money and family.
Nadia was severely struggling, without Toflar, taking care of her child, Valentina, was very difficult. She ends up blaming the red gemstone given to Valentina, believing it's cursed, ruining Valentina's fate by stealing her youth and ruining their family.
A famine broke out, which caused five million people to die from hunger, additionally, riots among displaced communities broke out, causing violence, possible looting, and death.
When a group of rioters invaded Nadia's house, Valentina hid in a closet. The exact intentions of the rioters is unknown, however it's possible Valentina could've been targeted by them due to the gemstone in her possession. Nadia protected her daughter, but died doing so, being gruesomely murdered while Valentina watched in horror. Nadia's final words were "My Valentina, you will find them... find that once-happy home...", right before she passed.
After the famine ended, Toflar sent a note to Nadia, apologizing for ruining their family and promising to make amends for his actions, saying that the "payday" in three days will cause their family to be reborn again. Knowing the timing, it's possible Nadia had been long dead at this time, and the only person who could've read it was Valentina.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- Despite Nadia blaming the gemstone for the fall of her family and Valentina's rapid aging, she likely knew that if the rioters wanted it, Valentina would've been killed as a result. She made a choice to protect her daughter, even if it means she would be left alone in the world with the cursed gem, possibly continuing aging her body and haunting her mind.
