Dear Visitor (2019)
Dear visitor,
I hope you have been well lately!
You have successfully completed all of your missions, which is quite an impressive feat!
In exchange, allow me to tell you the story of Blodeuwedd, the wife of a Welsh hero, Lleu Llaw Gyffes. This is a tale of the consequences that arose from breaking her oath:
"Betrayed, Lleu was struck by a spear hurled by Gronw Pebr, and so turned into a falcon and flew away. Lleu's uncle, Gwydion, found him perched high in an oak tree. Gwydion sang him an englyn, then coaxed Lleu down from the oak tree and turned him back into a human. With Lleu's form restored, they reclaimed the lands that had been usurped by Gronw Pebr and Blodeuwedd. As punishment for her betrayal, Gwydion pursued a fleeing Blodeuwedd and turned her into an owl, a bird despised by all other birds.
Thus did Gwydion declare the fate of Blodeuwedd: 'You may no longer show your face in the daylight, for the birds in the sky will forever remain hostile towards you. No matter where you go, they will forsake you and show you no mercy. May you never forget your name: Blodeuwedd.'[6]
Poor Blodeuwedd, her example serves to remind us that oaths are not meant to be broken, especially by our own "hands."
I have a small question for you:
Do you happen to know the name of my owl?
I wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,

Dear [player name], Best wishes, |
An unsent letter to home (2020)
Dear Gertrude,
It might be hard for you to imagine, but my fate is sealed.
I am here to seek a way out of the vow I've taken, but the path before me seems to be more strenuous than we've imagined.
I assure you this is not a laughing matter.
For reasons unknown, I feel a disturbance in the air, and the sound of a woman's faint moaning is constantly in my ears.
Something tells me I should leave this instant, yet that soft moan freezes my legs.
I glance upon that person I've always trusted, the kind man who is voiceless as I am, but he is attempting to destroy our hope with his very hands.
But not to worry,no matter what lies ahead, I've accepted my fate.
After all, the past is the past, and the future is unknown.
I've paid my debt to grasp the truth that my God has enlightened me.
Best Regards,
Eli Clark

Serial No. 6-1-1
Name: Eli Clark
[Test Indicators]
1. Cautious (a result of the psychological burden of his "Foresight")
2. Abnormally high self-esteem
3. Desires fame and fortune
[Test Trend]
A so-called "seer" who knows nothing
[Test Results]
1. Overall Evaluation: The first uninvited guest of the Manor. Interestingly, his performance exceeded expectations.
2. Analysis Summary:
a. Similar to the previous tests, the source of his malicious intent stems from suspicion.
Under duress, the reasonable introduction of "bait" in the form of unequal interests can serve to stimulate, or even enlarge, this malicious intent.
b. This is the first recorded instance of "Foresight." Currently, there are insufficient experimental results to support it and, as such, it cannot be clearly defined. More empirical data is required.
However, based on the test results of Subject 6-1-1, if notions of mysticism (such as the soul of predicting the future) must be involved, the Lakeside Village test site would serve as the best location for stimulating such an ability. With regards to future experimentation, procuring subjects such as 6-1-1 and conducting focused observation in Lakeside Village are advised.
c. The ability to predict the future does not guarantee the ability to alter it.
Experimental results for Subject 6-1-1 show that, even when auxiliary circumstances deviate from a probable outcome, the developmental curve of events will eventually approach said outcome. As shown in the first two pages of Subject 6-1-1's behavior during the experiment, he refused to accept the foreseen outcome and made various attempts to change it (including but not limited to removing potential obstructions). Surprisingly, the series of choices he made ultimately resulted in the initial predicted outcome. It is unfortunate that there is only one recorded experiment for Subject 6-1-1, and that the result aligned with the prediction. As the experiment can no longer be repeated, the following conjecture cannot be verified as true: Was Subject 6-1-1 truly unable to alter the future through his own choices, or did the behavior of the other three test subjects decide the final outcome?
As far as this point is concerned, perhaps others would be more willing to view this as akin to the ouroboros.
d. The cheaters who can see the future are the ones who know the least.
This is the most interesting aspect of this set of experiments. When I first saw the test subjects, I would never have deduced that the "seer" would be their own demise, or that the "honest" would defeat the "cheater."
A Hidden Note Wrapped Around an Owl's Foot (2022)
The birds flutter ever so slowly, the sound of droplets gone from the ear, and the stench of iron frozen in the air.
The particles from my body are dissipating, allowing the fog and wind to pierce through me.
Your figure is disappearing from my sight and the world stops before my eyes.
I can feel all of this happening.
But do not grieve me. From the moment my end was foreseen, I learned to accept it, but I still failed to understand...
Why does death creep upon me when I obey God's word? Why does my sight deceive me when I believe in the Seer wholeheartedly?
Now, when the voices in my head quietened, I finally understood why the Gods made me agree to everything.
Gertrude, I promised you wealth and happiness, but everything is in vain beneath the silence.
Desire and truth cannot be conveyed. We do not see much, nor do we know much.
A slow-witted fellow like me only realized it at the end. I could have used another body to fulfill my promise and deceive the Gods as Lugh did.
Eli Clark will forget you forever, and Brooke Rose will remember you anew.
And you shall hear the voices I once heard.
Lastly,
The prophecy was correct. I should leave now. Goodbye, my dear Gertrude.
A Message (2023)
Destiny led him to the huge oak tree, enlightened him, and made him sleep in an "absolute" ending. Everything about him faded within the invisible ring. Neither will, oath, nor the starling's shadow could escape this fate.
Eli Clark's Investigation Field Notes I (2024)
Behind the hidden door in the living room lies the answer. The vast archives of the missing are stored within, yearning to be revealed. The handwritten records of the investigation are spine-tingling as if the clamor of deranged entities has been forced into silence and poured into these thin pages, where they wait patiently for you to decipher them.
More evidence is required to support the mental state in which the "subject" in the archives was judged. However, I suspect that "evil" was amplified to varying degrees in the "experiments." After all, most of the test records about the missing person differ greatly from my initial findings in previous investigations.I have been able to piece together the origin of some of the missing person's "test markers." Considering that the medicine stored in the underground chambers may cause adverse reactions in those who visit them, I decided to take precautionary measures and document the relevant analyses as soon as possible.
...
Eli Clark
I can't easily determine whether the "vanity" mentioned in the test marker in the archive was a reaction to his own fall from grace or pity for the struggles of his tribe.Analyzing the contradiction between such external manifestations and the inner self inevitably leads back to Silverdale.
Silverdale is the northernmost seaside village in Lancashire, where Eli Clark grew up.
I vividly recall chatting with the villagers at the alehouse in Silverdale. My notes from the first day were filled with phrases like "no such person here." As the villagers refilled their ale and rambled on about past events, much of the reminiscing focused on the Act—a defining moment of the era. I could only catch glimpses of the investigation subject's profile in the social tide, piecing together Eli Clark's character from scant details.
It wasn't until the seventh day, when the cold winds rushing in with the tides from Morecambe Bay finally lifted the London haze, that the dusty memories of the interviewees became clearer.
Anyone who remembered Eli Clark used words like "strange" and "mysterious" to describe him. In most cases, "strange" meant an outlier, and "mysterious" meant reticent. I learned the origin of such "reticence" from a variety of sources—
The Clarks were originally businessmen in Lancashire. While they weren't tycoons, they were regarded as "profit-makers" until a failed investment dealt a severe blow to the family. The financial loss was too substantial for them to recover, forcing young Eli Clark to drop out of public school and move to Silverdale with his mother. The villagers never met Eli Clark's father; some speculated he had abandoned his family to escape his debts, while others believed he had taken his own life by jumping into the river. Regardless, mother and son never addressed the rumors, and young Eli was often seen playing alone in the oak forest. A gentleman at the pharmacy recalled that it wasn't until one late autumn evening, when Eli came in seeking medicine for a starling with a broken wing, that he realized the "strange child" the neighbors spoke of was not mute.
When I tried to press the pharmacist for more details, he simply waved his hand and said that the incident was one of the few exchanges he had with Eli. He had given the medicine out of pity but didn't know if the starling had survived the winter or if Eli had taken it back to the oak forest. All he knew was that by spring, Eli had an owl perched on his shoulder and wore a black cloth over his eyes. Since then, the villagers' curious glances only intensified.
("In fact, that wasn't strange at all."
The pharmacist whispered to me as we walked out of the alehouse.
"That was the starling's way of repaying his kindness. Like a messenger, it guided him to an encounter with the divine.")
As I write this, I see the back of the pharmacist as he walks towards his store. His silk shirt glows under the moonlight, a fine material of delicate texture. I'm not sure why he seemed so confident, but perhaps he, too, had once received a "messenger's favor" or a "prophet's thanks."
After the repeal of the Grain Act, the villagers no longer had the luxury of gossiping about their neighbors. In the metropolis, large crowds of protesters took to the streets. Meanwhile, farmers in the more distant villages and towns didn't fully grasp the government's macroeconomic maneuvers behind the act, but they understood one thing clearly: the low price of grain was devastating for them. Even today, people still complain and curse when the topic comes up.
During that period, the grain import and export trade resumed, leading to a flood of foreign food products that caused domestic prices to plummet. The old aristocratic landowners, determined to maintain their luxurious lifestyles, refused to lower rents on fields and pastures. As a result, many domestic farmers and grain merchants went bankrupt. Desperate to survive, people flocked to the cities in search of work, driving down wages and fueling industrial development. The unstoppable tide of change moved forward, indifferent to individual wills. Even if Eli Clark could foresee glimpses of the future, he couldn't alter the broader trend. However, he could at least protect himself and perhaps even thrive in these changing times.
It was while reflecting on this that I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Hutton, who was back in his hometown for a vacation. His account of events confirmed my assertions.
As the people of Silverdale struggled to survive after the repeal of the Grain Act, few noticed that Eli Clark had quietly integrated himself into the circle of the nouveau riche. According to Mr. Hutton, Mr. Clark was a man of few words but possessed great insight. It was with Mr. Clark's assistance that Mr. Hutton entered the coal trade and achieved his current success.
Instead of focusing on Mr. Hutton's seemingly self-aggrandizing narrative about Eli Clark and his own strategic prowess, I found myself more intrigued by a story Mr. Hutton casually mentioned—
Mr. Hutton once saw Eli Clark in a remote harbor in Lancashire.
The area was known as a gathering place for the unemployed and laborers. Curious about Mr. Clark's purpose there and hoping to seize a business opportunity, Mr. Hutton invited him to lunch at a decent café nearby. While Mr. Hutton talked at length, Clark remained reticent, occasionally glancing out the window.
("Three times."
Mr. Hutton emphasized while telling the story.
Clearly, he was quite proud of his observation skill.)
It seemed that the third glance confirmed the identity of a beggar huddled against the cold across the street. Eli Clark revealed to Mr. Hutton that the old lady's husband had been a grain merchant who traded with the farmers of Silverdale.
As Mr. Hutton watched Eli Clark lead the old lady into the café, he admitted that he became a bit emotional. He reflected that if he had been involved in the grain trade at that time, he might have been the one now seeking relief from the Church. However, he noted that he had seen many people in even more dire situations than the old lady.
Mr. Hutton made no further inquiries about the relationship between Eli Clark and the old lady. I later conducted a visit to confirm that the old lady and her grain merchant husband had once extended a helping hand to Eli Clark and his mother. It wasn’t exactly a "favor," but more an act of "kindness," similar to how the gentleman from the pharmacy had helped Eli Clark's starling.
The difference was that while the gentleman from the pharmacy had survived the harsh winter of the Grain Act unemployment wave and was able to stand before me, suggesting that he believed Eli Clark was conveying the will of the Prophet, the old lady had quietly and peacefully passed away in front of Eli Clark in that warm café.
Mr. Hutton remarked that she was lucky, as she at least had a good meal and died with a smile.
To some extent, I agree with him.
But I am certain Eli Clark would disagree.
Eli Clark: Investigation Field Notes II (2025)
To gain a deeper understanding of Mr. Clark, my line of inquiry turned toward Mr. Hutton's business associate—the Vandergaw family, whom he claimed had risen to prominence through Mr. Clark's early assistance.
In Hull, I called upon a grain brokerage near the docks. The air was thick with the mingled scents of milling dust, tobacco, and damp burlap. With Mr. Hutton's card as my introduction, the interview proceeded more smoothly than usual. The firm's elderly clerk brushed a thin film of powder from his ledgers as he told me what he knew of the Vandergaws.
"The Vandergaws, ma'am, they're old hands in the grain trade," the clerk rasped in his local accent. "After the repeal of the Act, they were among those who suffered most. Cheap foreign wheat flooded in like a tide, and their rented farms and home-grown crops could no longer compete. Their working capital drained away before their eyes—they were near as good as corpses chained to an anchor."
The old man lowered his voice, as though confiding a long-guarded secret of the Exchange. "The curious thing was, Mr. Vandergaw always managed to turn peril to his favor. Cautious by nature he might be, yet it was as if he'd secured the patronage of some well-informed gentleman who always caught the wind of the market a moment before the rest. His gains were modest but steady, just enough to keep the family respectable, never utterly ruined. But the true transformation came after that season's round of social gatherings."
"At the time, everyone's eyes were fixed on the landing price of Prussian wheat. Mr. Vandergaw, on the contrary, sold off all his forward contracts tied to Prussian grain and poured every penny of liquid capital into a batch of, well, brewing barley from East Anglia, whose futures languished then under predictions of a bumper wheat harvest. Folks thought him mad—a gambler courting suicide!"
"And the result?" I pressed him.
"The result, ma'am, was victory," the clerk said, his voice colored with envy and awe. "A blight known as stem rust swept the Prussian fields; yields collapsed. Worse still, the afflicted wheat turned poisonous, unfit for food and foul even for cheap spirits. The market collapsed overnight. Those holding wheat contracts were ruined outright, while the East Anglian barley papers turned to gold. The Vandergaws not only wiped out their debts but gained enough to purchase the river-mouth warehouses of two failing competitors. They later invested in a small fleet of steam barges for inland transport. In the merchants' circle of Hull, the family were once more players at the table—not mere spectators."
Having concluded his story, the clerk's eyes drifted to the newspaper clippings I had laid out upon the desk, each one bearing the Vandergaw name. His finger tapped a particular headline. "In truth, ma'am, you've already uncovered most of it yourself."
It was a report from The Hull Daily Mail, describing an unexplained explosion at the Vandergaw cotton-seed pressing plant, which erupted on the eve of its grand opening. Fed by the sea wind, the flames devoured both the factory and the costly Egyptian seed within.
I followed his words. "My understanding is that the Vandergaws later turned from traditional grain trading to the seed oil industry."
"Ambition, ma'am," he replied. "Their fortune grew, and with it, ambition. Seed oil pressing was then the new industry thriving in Hull. They built an advanced cotton-seed mill on the east bank, financed by loans secured against their shipping fleet. But fortune did not smile a second time. Even if one escapes disaster by nature's hand, man's own hand is harder to elude. I recall that day well—the whole eastern quarter of Hull shrouded in black smoke, the air thick with the stench of burning oil."
"By man's hand? Then you believe the fire was no accident?"
The old clerk gave no direct reply. His clouded eyes remained fixed upon the photograph of the factory ruins. "Every profitable enterprise has its guardians of self-interest," he murmured. "To them, Vandergaw was an outsider—too swift, too mysterious in his ascent."
Indeed, my own inquiries confirmed it. The Vandergaw plant had risen with remarkable speed, its machinery imported from Germany, its prospects luminous. Yet as a latecomer crossing into a new field, he was bound to tread upon established toes. The Vandergaw name had weight among grain dealers, but elsewhere in Hull it marked him only as a Dutch-blooded stranger, one without roots.
The clerk leafed through another ledger, its pages crackling. There again appeared the Vandergaw account—but now listed under Bankruptcy, Liquidation.
"The insurance agents finally blamed worker negligence," he said. "The payout could not hope to settle their losses nor the bank's claims. Their ship fleet was auctioned, their warehouses sold for a pittance. In a single night, they lost more than they had ever gained." He shut the ledger with a dull thud. At that moment, a gust from the harbor slipped through the door, bearing the tang of salt and coal-smoke.
Yet my doubts were not eased. Rather, they congealed into a sharper question. According to Mr. Hutton, soon after that same social season, Mr. Clark had taken his place at Miss Gertrude Vandergaw's side, as the family's confidential adviser. If their former profits arose from Mr. Clark's uncanny foresight, why had that foresight failed to shield them from this ruinous explosion?
Mr. Clark became engaged to Miss Gertrude Vandergaw soon thereafter, making concealment unlikely.
Was it possible that his visions came in fragments, and that error lay in their interpretation?
Or perhaps what he discerned were the tempests of nature, not the shadows within the human heart. Much as Mr. Vandergaw himself could read the markets' fluctuations, yet not the jealousy and avarice of men. Perhaps the family's downfall was written long before—the inevitable retribution of human hearts hidden deeper than any storm or plague.
Can Mr. Clark's struggle against fate truly alter its course? To uncover the truth, one must surely find the story's other principal figure.

Compiled Overview
Backstory
Eli was born to a modest business family in Lancashire. At some point, his life turned after a devastating investment failure that dealt a severe blow to his family.[CO 1] After this financial loss, Eli’s father would force him to drop out of public school. Eli and his mother moved to Silverdale, becoming isolated from the local community.[CO 2] Rumors swirled that his father’s disappearance led to jumping into the river or abandonment but were never confirmed by Eli nor his mother.[CO 3]
Villagers perceived Eli as an outcast, often alone in the woods until he found an injured starling lying under a big oak tree.[CO 4] Eli hurriedly brought it to the local pharmacy store and after picking up a special medicine for the owl, he nursed it back to health so it could live through the upcoming winter.[CO 5] However, even after the owl could fly again it chose to stay with him, and the two fostered a close relationship.[CO 6] With his special ability, he could see that within the starling was an ancient soul, who helped him see more clearly into the future, but only after making an oath to not record or share these "intangible things."
During the Grain Act Repeal,[14] rural England suffered catastrophic bankruptcy's that affected farmers and resulted in hundreds of unemployed protests against the government's macroeconomic agenda for lowering grain prices.[CO 7] Eli remained largely unnoticed amid economic unrest but subtly adapted, joining the inner circles of the nouveau riche to avoid political conflict.[CO 8] He helped someone like Mr. Hutton enter a successful coal trade showing both social intelligence and prophetic insight.[CO 9] In a symbolic moment, Eli recognizes and aids an old beggar whose husband had once helped his family. She dies peacefully after they finish their final meal together. Sometime later, Eli met and fell in love with a wealthy merchant's daughter named Gertrude.[CO 10]
When Eli saw a prophesy of Mr. Vandergaw's wheat business that was going to be damaged, he told Gertrude about it.[CO 11] Although they were soon engaged, it resulted in him breaking his oath and he was punished heavily for saving her family's business.[CO 12] Writing to his fiancé about his troubles, she replies that there must be some trick to get around the oath and return his abilities, referencing the story of Lleu Llaw Gyffes.[15]
With Gertrude's urging, as well as the return of the voice in his head, he is compelled to go to the Manor and participate.
Events at the Manor
Eli Clark was the first participant to arrive in a Second Manor Game of Group 6 with Luchino Diruse, Demi Bourbon, "Martha Behamfil" and a paranormal presence that contains the soul of Michiko. Despite not being formally invited, Eli entered the Manor on his own accord, possibly to seek a way out of a vow he’s taken or a sense of duty to fulfill his broken oath based on a prophecy. His arrival sparked immediate scrutiny from the experimenters, who labeled him Subject 6-1-1 and began documenting his foresight abilities.
At some point, Eli met Luchino Diruse in the dining room and observed him in a weakened, bandaged state. Luchino appeared kind and cautious but harbored strange scale-like injuries. That evening, Demi joined and later Martha would become the fourth known arrival to the game.
Over time, Eli became unsettled when he foresaw a tragic prophecy and tries to avoid it. However, he soon became disturbed by Michiko’s faint voice telling him to stay that weakened his will to leave, even when he knew he should. With one final option, Eli attempted to avert the predicted outcome by warning the others about Luchino’s strange behavior due to a chemical exposure that could transform him into a reptile.
Despite his efforts, the outcome could not be changed. Eli has suffered from the wind after trying to interfere with Luchino’s transformation and believed that he could still alter fate. In his final hours, Eli wrote to Gertrude that he once promised her happiness and tells her not to worry about his fate. He referenced using another body invoking Lugh’s myth, and hinted that Brooke Rose might survive in his place. His final message was sent via owl as his body never recovered.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions
- From his 2019 Birthday letter, it is highly likely that his owl is named Blodeuwedd, after a Welsh mythological figure who betrayed her oath and tried to kill her husband. In an earlier version of the birthday letter the names in the letter had been adjusted or mistranslated, with Blodeuwedd's name being Brooke Rose.

- ↑ The Grain Act Repeal is heavily inspired by real-world British history, particularly the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 that was a major turning point in 19th-century British economic and agricultural policy. The Corn Laws (1815–1846) in the UK were a series of protectionist trade laws that imposed tariffs on imported grain and was meant to protect British landowners and farmers from foreign competition after the Napoleonic Wars. However, by the 1840s, These laws artificially inflated food prices, worsening urban hunger during economic downturns.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_Laws - ↑ Lleu Llaw Gyffes is a Welsh hero who had a very specifically worded 'immortality' as he could not be killed "during the day or night, nor indoors or outdoors, neither riding nor walking, not clothed and not naked, nor by any weapon lawfully made." However, his wife is able to kill him by finding a loophole in each of these definitions. There are many similarities between Eli and Lleu's story - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lleu_Llaw_Gyffes
Translation Notes
- ↑ Note that "animal taming" is most likely the correct translation, but it has been called different things such as "Animal Servitude", "Animal Handling", and "Animal Slaving" depending on when and where his talents are listed. "Animal Domestication" may also be the correct terminology as well.
- ↑ Eli uses an archaic term to refer to Emma, 女史 joshi. It comes from Chinese and is apparently a form of respectful address for “women with high social standing and/or reputation”. It originates from the way ladies of the court would be called in Chinese.
- ↑ 尊い toutoi is an adjective that traditionally means “respectable”/”noble”, but in more recent years has been used by fandom to describe their favs or their ships.
- ↑ 分身 bunshin could mean a double of someone, a duplicate, but also one’s child.
- ↑ Eli normally uses 私 watashi, but here he uses 僕 boku.
- ↑ Traditionally, Japanese oni wield metal clubs and wear pants with tiger stripes.
- ↑ The name of the event “To you, forever ago” in Japan is “For the innocent you”
