The Chief

The Chief is a minor character who was the father of Angelina. He was a chief of a Cherokee tribe.^[1]

Personality[]

Not much is known about the Chief. Kevin's deductions imply he was kind and welcoming, which is corroborated by the Chief's daughter, Angelina, also showing these traits.

Compiled Overview[]

The Chief is an unnamed man who was a chief of a Cherokee tribe.^[1] He is the father of Angelina.

After his daughter's death at the hand of Kevin's parents, he was left unaware of her fate. Years after her unexplained disappearance, the Chief and his tribe encountered Kevin starving and freezing in the cold. The tribe saves Kevin's life, and one of the elders in the tribe (implied to be the Chief) recognizes Angelina's Lasso in Kevin's possession. The Chief and the tribe assume that Kevin knows what happened to Angelina, who never returned to them, but Kevin lies that she ran away to spare their feelings, as Kevin believes that they are better off not knowing she is dead. This is also in part because Kevin feels guilty for his parents' role in Angelina's death.

The Chief welcomes Kevin into the tribe, and for a while, they travel together. At some point, the Chief gifts Kevin a Dry Pipe. The tribe's movements are tracked by colonists, and they are attacked more and more frequently while Kevin is with them, leading to him being suspected as a spy. This piles onto Kevin's guilt, that he is making the tribe and the Chief's lives harder by remaining with them. Kevin grapples with his choice of keeping Angelina's death from the Chief and the tribe, and eventually is unable to cope with it anymore. Kevin leaves the Chief all his worldly possessions (a bag of gold coins) and a farewell letter, and sets off to Europe.

It is unknown what happened to the Chief and his tribe after Kevin parted ways with them.
