When the sun sinks into the lake and the black stars rise, the one draped in yellow rags will rise from the depths of the lake. He is a nameless soul with an unquenching thirst for knowledge.

Hastur, also known as The Feaster, is a Difficulty Level 1.5 Hunter available for purchase after the completion of the prologue. He is one of 31 playable Hunters added to Identity V.

Your fear stems from the unknown.

—Hastur (Deduction Star 2021)

Appearance

Hastur is a tall, bulky humanoid reminiscent of an octopus, with blood red skin, wide shoulders, disproportionately bony arms, tiny, claw-like hands, and four undulating, glistening dark crimson tentacles for legs. Apart from his limbs, the rest of his body seems to be a cloud of shifting, scarlet gas. His faceless visage is studded with what looks like bloody eyeballs, constantly moving around and blinking.

He wears a ragged tan-and-cream robe with haphazard white stitching, bloodstains, and a matching hood pulled over his somewhat nonexistent head, and his arms are wrapped in white linen bandages. A bunch of wooden rods tied with black rope and white strips of fabric resembling a circle, together with multiple small ritual rock fragments tangled in the rope, floats behind his back.

Gameplay

The Feaster is a Hunter with slow movement speed but a long reach, able to place Tentacles anywhere on the ground. Tentacles will also appear next to a Survivor when he reaches the first marker of Presence and again when reaching full Presence, when a Survivor is injured, or when a Survivor fails any kind of calibration. Any tentacle in his sight can be chosen to attack, falling towards the closest Survivor. If a Survivor is hit by a tentacle, they will be injured the same amount as a normal attack.

Concept / Design Notes[6]

Design Notes

TheFeasterDesignNotesRBCN

Hastur is one of the Old Ones in the system constructed by August William Derleth for Cthulhu Mythos. He has no face, and most of his body is covered by a yellow robe, with octopus-like tentacles protruding from the bottom of the robe and constantly wriggling. We took inspiration from the decorations seen in some tribal sacrifices, so that the character is like a "summoned evil God". In order to show that there is no entity under the yellow clothes, special effects are used to replace the face, and the small shaking eyes give people the feeling of being watched. Due to the limitation of bones, too many tentacles cannot be made. In order to optimize his motions, the length and cut of the clothing has went through many versions.

Change Log

August 29th, 2019
  • Adjustment: External Trait:
    • Terror Source: Terror is generated and Tentacles will appear when a Survivor is injured or when a Teammate is knocked down. Tentacles will decrease nearby Survivors' decoding, gate opening, vaulting, and healing speed. Hastur is also able to use Tentacles to attack nearby Survivors.
    • Terrified: Survivors will continuously charge Hastur's Tentacles when they are within the Terror radius. The more Survivors within range, the faster they charge. Every time it's charged, Hastur will gain a Tentacle summon usage up to 5 times.
  • Adjustment: Active Skill:
    • Default Skill - Tentacles: Hastur can absorb the Survivors' Terror to charge and summon the Tentacles. Hastur can also release the Tentacles at a specific location by tap and holding it.
    • Default Skill - Nightmare Attack: Hastur can control nearby tentacles. Tap and hold the skill button to hit the nearest Survivor with the tentacle.
    • Tier 1 Skill - Condensation of Terror: On top of absorbing Survivors' Terror, Hastur's Tentacles will also gain additional charge over time, up to 5 times.
    • Tier 2 Skill - Nightmare Gaze: Hastur can choose to stare at a Survivor. After being stared at by Hastur, in the next 20 seconds, Hastur can tap the Skill button repeatedly to attack the Survivor passing the Tentacles.
  • Other Changes
    • Adjustment: Optimized Hastur's Balloon Knife and knife judgment, increased Hastur's Movement Speed, decreased knife judgment duration and the back swing of normal attack, and removed the slow Movement Speed effect from long hold casting;
    • Buff: Decreased the Tentacles placement time and greatly increased Hastur's Tentacle Smash duration;
    • Adjustment: Optimized Tentacle selection logic. The rule of selecting Tentacles has been adjusted from its original Character orientation to viewing angle orientation. Now, the issue where players are unable to select Tentacles even after multiple taps will no longer happen;
    • Adjustment: Adjusted Tentacles casting method. Now, the entire screen can be used to move the skill icon, and Tentacles that reach the borders will not move at a constant speed;
    • Adjustment: Newly casted Tentacles will greatly decrease the duration of other Tentacles when there are Survivors tied to the Rocket Chairs nearby;
    • Buff: Slightly increased the attack range of Tentacle Smash and increased the duration needed to disarm Tentacles;
    • Adjustment: Removed the delay damage from Tentacle Smash.
October 24th, 2019
  • Nerf: The Feaster's speed will be decreased by 10% if casting Tentacles when charging;
  • Nerf: Adjusted Survivor's reactions when hit by The Feaster's Tentacles, and Survivors hit by Tentacles can now rescue teammates on Rocket Chairs immediately;
  • Nerf: Increased The Feaster's Tentacle usage duration.
May 13th, 2021
  • Nerf: The duration of the recovery action for the Feaster's normal attack and charged attack is extended (0.5 seconds), and the range of his normal attack is shortened.
  • Nerf: The additional charging for one tentacle when the Feaster unlocks Tier 1 ability is removed.
  • Nerf: The mechanism that increases the Feaster's tentacle charge where more Survivors are within the Feaster's Terror radius is removed. The charging speed remains the same now, no matter how many Survivors there are.

Trivia

  • Hastur is based on a character of the same name, originally from the novel The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers. The character was later used by H.P. Lovecraft and folded into the Cthulhu mythos.
    • The King in Yellow is his title in Chinese.
  • Priestess' Token accessory appears to be based on him.
  • There is a piece of furniture called the Deepsea Shrine, which depicts Hastur's Poseidon's Crown & Poseidon costumes. Said piece of furniture can only be obtained after purchasing the custom lobby Palace of Silence.
  • He appears in all three episodes of the stage play series produced in Japan. He was played by Hino Arata. He takes the role of a wise and benevolent deity, guiding the Hunter characters, and sometimes Survivors as well, through the stories, and even singing to comfort them.
  • In the Chinese Server, his eyes are purple and blue rather than red.
