Summary[]

Lady Truth’s best friend, Anna, is found to possess a spectacular talent and is sent to Lone Moon Girls’ School along with her adoptive sister, “Hebe”, to receive training from the best scholars in each field of art. Anna writes to Truth regularly about her experience at the school and her findings, but Lady Truth shortly receives a letter from Hebe, instead of Anna.

In her letter, Hebe reveals that Anna (or “Echo”) had gone mad and the school’s response was to lock her up in the castle tower temporarily, before sending her off to an asylum. Hebe asks for Lady Truth’s help - to both rescue Anna and to uncover the truth behind Anna’s predicament. Lady Truth accepts the alias of “Truth” and the maid outfit attached to the letter, and embarks to the school; not as Lady Truth, the detective, but as Truth, Hebe’s personal maid and caretaker.

Truth arrives on the school grounds and meets the author of the novel “Knight of the Lone Moon”, the Professor of Literature. He recounts his version of the tale to her: a royal knight fell in love with the imprisoned princess from a former dynasty, only for her to realize what he had sacrificed for her the day before their wedding, ending her life as an attempt to lead him back on the right path. The knight, clutching the princess’ lifeless body, organized a funeral for her in person, refusing to let anyone else touch her. He locked himself in the tower she jumped from for whole nights at a time - until one night, the princess’ favorite song being played on a violin was heard drifting from the tower, and the knight no longer came down. His body was found shortly, fished up from a nearby lake. From then on, the tale was known: “On the night of the full moon, when the strings sound out, the knight will search for his long-lost love.” Two items disappeared from the tower: one, the princess’ family heirloom, a large blue gemstone; and two, the knight’s violin. The final clue the knight left was a single paper note with the words, “When the strings sound out, the destined will uncover the door of moonbeams. From the castle's highest, they will arrive treading on the moon”, written on it.

Truth and the Professor of Literature’s conversation is interrupted by the entrance of Hebe, assisted by Talia, another student. Hebe speaks to Truth about the context of the school, briefly mentioning that the castle it utilized originally belonged to the Chausson family but was instead given to the Mélodis family, who sponsored the school’s construction. Hebe then recounts everything that happened before Echo’s accident - Echo (whom Truth knows as Anna) was found in the tower alone, with the Art Assistant at night, which would have expelled her if only the Art Assistant had not given up his own position and if the Professor of Literature had not vouched for her to stay. Afterward, Echo was found alone in the tower gazing at the moon and refused to leave the tower under any pretenses. The Schoolmistress could not do anything but lock her in the tower to protect the other students. Echo was rumored to be emotionally scarred, though other rumors said she had the Lone Moon Castle’s Curse. After a further inquiry from Truth, Hebe informs her to ask the Professor of Literature about it for more information, and also asks her if she had time to fetch her sketch from the art studio.

Truth visits the art studio first and meets Narcissus, the fine arts teacher. Narcissus sneers at the notion of Hebe using her parents’ status to request a personal maid, also remarking that Truth did not resemble Echo in the slightest. Truth retrieves the sketch and brings it to Hebe, who mentions that her sketch is a replica of one of the two paintings that were originally found in the tower. She replicated the portrait painting of the princess but refuses to tell Truth why she preferred it over the landscape painting. Hebe, however, does mention that the landscape painting was painted by the princess, and it would change slightly if moonlight was shone onto the moon on its canvas. The two then discuss a plan to try and rescue Echo, deciding to ask Clio, a student who had permission to visit Echo once a week, for help.

As curfew fell, a sudden panic occurred at the tower. Clio, collapsed on the floor shaking, claimed that she had seen Echo walk into the painting on the wall.

The next morning, the schoolmistress asked all witnesses to meet at the reading room. She announces that she had sent one of the school staff to fetch the police for an investigation and that he would return in three days, then proceeds to ask Hebe if they could speak privately. While waiting for Hebe, Truth investigates the surroundings, coincidentally finding that Clio was reading books in Braille. She accidentally eavesdrops on Talia and the Professor of Literature’s conversation, learning that Clio had heard violin music in the tower last night.

The Professor of Literature catches Truth, who profoundly apologies and asks about the Lone Moon Castle’s Curse. The Professor of Literature explains that every castle owner has experienced the event of at least one person going missing or mad on castle grounds, and the legend that the vengeful spirit of the Lone Moon knight was taking their souls in revenge was formed. He also mentions Noyce, who was sent to contact the police and the Mélodis family’s heir, and how he was the one guarding the tower when Echo was still in it. Truth, seizing the opportunity, decides to investigate the tower.

Truth sneaks into the tower and memorizes its layout, also noting that it was rather old and seemed as if it were built from the previous time period. As she planned to leave, she heard another pair of footsteps climbing the tower, panicked, and hid. It was Narcissus who had entered the tower. From Truth’s hiding spot, she saw Narcissus climb onto the table and she could hear something moving as the light within the tower dimmed, while an area underneath the portrait was illuminated by light. After hearing the sound of something moving once again, the light within the tower returned, and Narcissus had already left the tower. Truth then hurries back to the reading room, fearful of being caught.

Truth, picking up a local history book in the reading room, begins to read its contents. She finds that the romance novel drastically differs from the events recorded in the history book. Eight royal knights overthrew their cruel monarch, the final one refusing to betray him but accepting of the new king. The final knight fell in love with the former princess, and the others were supportive of their marriage. However, the princess had also been gathering rebellion troops in secret to overthrow the current king and bring back her empire before her suicide, only to be seemingly betrayed by them in the very end.

Hebe and the Schoolmistress arrive, and Hebe tells Truth that the Schoolmistress had said that she believed Echo committed suicide and Clio’s strange description was due to her shock. Truth uses this opportunity to confirm that Clio was indeed blind, and decides to ask her about the truth once she returns from town with Noyce.

Truth sneaked back to the tower after dusk but found that Narcissus had entered before her. However, when she entered, Narcissus was gone.

The following day, the police called did not arrive and neither did Noyce, the one meant to fetch them; however, Clio had returned, escorted by the town’s medical personnel. The Schoolmistress searched Noyce and Narcissus’ rooms, finding that both were planning to escape, and as Truth was about to tell everyone about her findings the night prior, Hebe stopped her as she had broken the school rules to obtain that information. The Professor of Literature was sent to town to contact the police, while Truth and Hebe were given permission to visit the tower again.

Truth states to Hebe that Echo is still alive and that she had escaped from the tower just like Narcissus did. She investigates the tower once more, but to no avail, only spotting a lighthouse in the distance. Hebe, when prompted, mentions a festival, “The Moonbeam of Hope”, with one of its customs being the lighthouses lighting up for three days straight. The festival had happened to be the two days prior. Truth, realizing Echo and Narcissus had disappeared on the first two days of “The Moonbeam of Hope”, knew she could confirm her theory that very night.

The Professor of Literature returns with the police at nighttime, of whom deduce Noyce and Clio murdered Echo, and try to arrest Clio. Truth steps in and asks the police to let her investigate the tower once again, this time successfully revealing an escape route from the tower to the docks. However, although Clio’s innocence was proved, the knight’s empty violin case was found on the windowsill, and the debate of who had stolen the artifact surfaced. The Professor of Literature stopped the argument, stating that the heir did not want the treasure, instead, believing that it should go to its rightful owner. He presented his brooch with his family crest as proof of him being an heir of the princess, and the investigation came to a conclusion.

Truth realizes what the “oath of the “traitors” ” truly meant; the traitors, being the eight knights who had betrayed their cruel king in hopes for a better world, and their oath, to only overthrow the king and to bring harm to no one else.

Hoping that Anna had escaped safely, Lady Truth departs from the castle, believing that the case had come to an end.
