Humming a tune with his arms crossed, the ripper has his own unique standards for his "guests".

Jack, also known as The Ripper, is a Difficulty Level 1 Hunter available for purchase after the completion of the prologue. He is one of 28 playable Hunters added to Identity V.

I have begun to fear falling asleep. That is most likely only a joke, but...I wake up to the smell of rust every morning. How can I be free of "him"?

—Jack (Deduction Quest No. 5)

Appearance

Jack is a drastically tall and thin humanoid with pale skin, an alarmingly slender body, and blurred and waxy features, with all that can be made out a sculpted, skeletal white disfiguring. His fingers are unnaturally long and claw-like, and his left hand has been replaced with a metal claw of long, curved surgical blades.

He wears a dull, pale teal coat with an exaggerated collar and flowing, sharp coattails, over a spotless white shirt and matching vest with a single metal button, skinny smoky green trouser with a white tear in the left side, and black dress shoes. A black-tie hang loosely around his shirt collar, and he wears a black fingerless glove on his right hand. He also wears a white mask with two black eyeholes over his entire face. A tall, black top hat sits on his head, and a pair of metal surgical scissors is visible in his lapel.

Gameplay

The Ripper is a Hunter can haul his Freezing Fog as a ranged attack that can damage the survivor and leaves behind a fog, allowing The Ripper to ignore his attack recovery (if far enough), gain movement speed bonus, and reduce his cooldown when stepping on the fog. His Hidden in Mist not only makes The Ripper even faster but also makes him unpredictable as his invisibility can hide his Freezing Fog and makes it difficult for survivors to predict.

Overall, The Ripper is great for players who prefer a to play as an easy to control and understand but hard to master character due to The Ripper's lack of active abilities which makes The Ripper a beginner friendly Hunter to play.

Tips

As The Ripper

  • Despite being one of the easier hunters for beginners due to all skills being passives, this hunter heavily relies on player's skill to truly master due to the ability restrictions.
  • The Ripper, despite lack of chair guarding ability, can use the Blade Mist to double hit survivors without triggering blade-wiping motion when guarding the chair.
  • If you have Detention, do not try to hit survivors with Blade Mist when the last cipher is decoded unless if that survivor is already injured. Doing so will freely give survivors speed boost from the damage.
    • Alternatively, you should use the Freezing Fog for travelling or catching survivors from far away instead.
  • His Freezing Fog can penetrate through the survivor if they are close enough, use this to hit both body blocking and rescued survivors after the survivor is rescued.
  • If you have the Freezing Fog active, try to hit the survivor with it instead of your regular attack even if the survivor is near as it doesn't trigger blade-wiping motion.
  • It is possible to fire a Blade Mist trait through walls if the wall is thin and you're close to the wall enough. This also includes small obstacles. Use this tactic for easier time hunting survivors early game.
    • It is easier to perform this trick with the assistance of Peeper due to the ability to see through walls.
  • Similar to Hell Ember, patience is key to victory and master the hunter as the Hidden in Mist ability can only be activated when not performing any actions and it heavily impacts the hunting ability.
    • You also move faster than Wildling riding the Boar with full rage while invisible.
  • Do not attempt to snipe survivors those are far away; the Blade Mist travels too slow to hit survivors (most of the time) and it is very easy to dodge a Blade Mist from a far.
  • It's a good idea to use fog blade when survivors are vaulting or dropping a pallet, as they would not be able to evade or use flywheel.
  • Using normal attack with fog blade in certain pallet areas can guarantee a hit as the fog blade would hit either way whether they slam the pallet or not.
  • Coordinator's flair and painter's paintings all have animations long enough for you to react and trade hits with your fog blade, this will effectively waste their items while also guarantees a hit.
  • When Hidden in Mist is not activated and there is a mist area nearby it is a good decision to step on the mist in order to shorten cooldown for Hidden in Mist, this generally allows a faster chasing pace then going directly without Hidden in Mist.
  • During circumstances where you have to travel a long distance in a hurry you can throw out your fog blade to generate a fog area slightly boosting your speed.
  • If confident enough with your aim you can try and use fog blade midair if the survivor jumped off a platform during kiting, due to the slight end lag when landing this will give you a guarantee hit if your aim was good enough.

Against The Ripper

  • Typically, survivors with the ability to block damage such as Seer and Perfumer are great counters as The Ripper cannot spam his Freezing Fog ability.
    • Magician also counts as the Decoy's clone can block the Blade Mist.
  • While kiting this hunter, you should look at the hunter almost all the time. This is so that you can acknowledge when the hunter is about to fire the Blade Mist.
    • Do not forget to look at the front as well too as you may run into a wall when you're going to dodge.
  • While it is hard to do, learning to predict and play mind games can heavily hinder the power of this hunter due how simple the abilities are and partly requires mastering mind games to both master the hunter and counter it.
    • This is easier if you know the hunter player's playstyle.
  • Forcing the hunter to perform a lot of interactions can hinder the power of Hidden in Mist ability.
  • When using hunters like enchantress or prisoner, stunning him during his attack windup usually disorients the aim of their fog blade.
  • When you're about to get hit by the hunter, make sure that you get hit by the regular attack instead of the Blade Mist by running straight to The Ripper. This is so that the hunter still has to go through the Blade-wiping motion and buy yourself more time to kite.
  • The Blade Mist can go through windows and dropped pallets even if The Ripper isn't near it. Take note of this while kiting.
    • Because of that, be careful when stunning this hunter with pallets as if he attacks before getting stunned, the stun animation will redirect his face straight to you and fires out the Blade Mist, resulting in the Blade mist hitting you.

Recommended Traits and Talents

Chosen Traits

  • With his specialization in chasing Survivors, this can be further emphasized by using Blink (to down survivors even more quickly) or Teleport (to instantly change to the next targets for a chase).
  • Dropping Peepers can be used to leave some map pressure (which he somewhat lacks) on Cipher Machines being worked on by other survivors while passing by and chasing a different teammate, or to slow vaulting speed.
    • Peepers can also be used to see survivors through walls, allowing for easier Freezing Fog attack through walls.

Persona Talents

  • Due to his lack of overall map pressure, it is important for him to find survivors quickly so that he can focus on chasing, which makes Tinnitus an incredibly useful trait when searching for prey.
  • Combining Wanted Order with Teleport allows him to find and approach the next survivor to chase after putting one in a Rocket Chair. While a survivor is in a Rocket Chair, Berserker is also good to combine with this set.
  • The traits Destructiveness and Rage are good to put points into as they help him resume a chase after an interruption.
  • Common Final Talents are Trump Card (so he can switch between useful chosen traits dependent on the game progress) and Detention (to potentially incapacitate any remaining survivors at endgame).

Our new friends
Jack the Ripper
A mysterious murderer from London
Killed at least five prostitutes in a row
No one knows his true appearance and background
Only the code name that was frightened upon hearing the news
And urban legends about this hellish nightwalker.[8]

Notorious

There is no doubt that "Jack the Ripper" is definitely one of the most notorious killers in European and American culture. The main reason why he has become a symbol is because of his confusing identity for hundreds of years. So far, no one has Be able to confirm who Jack the Ripper really is. Therefore, in "Identity V", when the art design of "Jack the Ripper", a new butcher, was adopted, a very creative "no face" setting was used. Simply sketching out the outline of his facial features, you can only see clearly. But there is no specific image at all. This ambiguous faceless man instead heightens an indescribable fear.

JacktheRipperinHistory

Jack the Ripper in History

Classic inheritance

If the setting of the Faceless Man is an innovation, then the reference to the costumes of Jack the Ripper in film and television dramas is a classic inheritance. Jack the Ripper in "Identity V" perfectly reproduces the character's gentleman persona. On the foggy streets of London, he will wear a typical Victorian top hat, black cloak and suit vest, and use his conversational style present an elegant, well-dressed image. However, combined with the "Tim Burton" style of the game itself, all these costumes have been dilapidated, making the entire character look darker, and murderous intent pervades these dilapidated elements.

JackBetaDesign

A flash of white light

He may look like a gentleman, but he actually hides murderous intent. This is the horror of Jack the Ripper. In the game, Jack's left hand suddenly appears with white light, and the five fingers are equipped with sharp, blood-stained claw blades. This art setting seems to make people see the figure of Burton's masterpiece "Edward Scissorhands", which makes everyone who can feel the weirdness, darkness and horror of Jack the Ripper, the typical Gothic style. In addition, Jack in the game will also have blood-red eyes, as well as skills and movements that turn into shadows. Every detail of the arrangement reveals the cruelty and killing intent of a top killer.

Design Notes [9]

TheRipperDesignNotesRBCN

As the most notorious killer in history, Jack the Ripper is a good material. Because the image of the regulator must have a sense of threat. Similarly, the British dress has different silhouettes. It is similar to the survivor Magician. They are all British three-piece dresses, but Jack is unusually thin, tall, and has long arms. Hanging over broad shoulders, the murder weapon was wrapped in a bandage. At first, I wanted to install weird weapons like saws and knives, but in the end I decided to use a hand knife. Another key feature is no face. The historical Jack the Ripper committed serial crimes but got away with it. No one knows what he looks like, so we also hope to present this sense of mystery. Compared with a specific face, a face without facial features is more recognizable spend. Because Jack is active in the foggy city of London, the fog element has become the special effect element of his skill performance.

Trivia

  • The Ripper was one of the three hunters the game launched with, alongside Smiley Face and Hell Ember.
  • He is based upon Jack the Ripper, a real serial killer who was infamous for the murders of several women without ever being caught during the 19th century.
    • His backstory is also likely based specifically on the real-life artist Walter Sickert who shares the same mentor James Whistler and was influenced by Edgar Degas, but was not made a suspect to the murders until the 1970s. Walter Sickert also painted a picture that is referenced in the last deduction called Jack the Ripper's Bedroom.
  • As with other early characters, Jack's mechanics and gameplay were inspired by elements from Dead by Daylight. In particular, he takes inspiration from The Wraith, a stealth killer who is also capable of turning invisible and use faster movement speed to catch survivors off guard.
    • Both The Ripper and The Wraith can use invisibility, but the way this works differs between the two: Jack's invisibility unlocks after reaching the first presence mark and automatically applies after a cooldown, being removed only when interacting with map elements or hitting survivors, while The Wraith can trigger his invisibility at will from the start of the match, but cannot attack until manually uncloaking himself.
    • As time went on, the gameplay of the two characters started to diverge, even if similar at their root. The most noticeable difference is Jack's ability to use a long ranged fog blade attack.
  • The Magician has a costume named "Masked Gentleman" based on Jack's appearance.
  • Three of the tunes Jack hums in the game are Le cygne (or the Swan) by Camille Saint-Saëns and Danse des petits cygnes (or The Dance of the Little Swans) by Tchaikovsky and Por una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel, the name of the rest haven't been found yet.
  • According to the Official Identity V Museum, he is 247 cms tall (8'1).
  • The Ripper, The Photographer, Mad Eyes and The Breaking Wheel are the only hunters that wield their weapon on their left hand.

  1. Martha Tabram who was stabbed to death on August 7th 1888 is considered to potentially be the date of the first murder by "Jack the Ripper." However, the first murder that was more the "style" of the Ripper was the death of Mary Ann Nichols on August 31st 1888. Please note that these are real tragedies and the death of real people who existed in history, and it should not be taken lightly.
