The following is a text transcript of the dialogue and events that occur during the storyline interactions and cutscenes. Note that these cutscenes cannot be replayed after completion, and that they will not show up at all on the PC version of the game.

Scene Six - A Dead End[]

All of these stories start with an invitation. After being promised that which they desire most, the participants are drawn in, unaware of exactly what kind of “game” awaits them. The winner of the “game” can claim their “treasure” -- some kind of holy grail that can make all their wishes come true. However, no one stops to consider the fate of the losers. Perhaps the organizer foresaw the selfish nature of man, he introduced the hunter to the game, to punish those who violate the rules in order to ensure the “game” doesn’t end before it even begins. These hunters are powerful and cruel monstrosities -- just one look at their faces can send people into shudder.

The participants of the “game” ultimately discovered that they were doomed from the start, and that the only winner was the organizer. All that awaited at the end was terror and insanity. An unsettling madness permeates these pages, and the diaries are filled with lies and exaggerations. But the truth behind it all is even more disturbing.

It is a detective’s job to sort truth from lies. For instance, did the little girl actually participate? What’s the reason for one so young to have to enter into such a crazy game? And these diaries -- the records are not entirely continuous. Is it because not everything that took place here was worth recording? Or could it just be a part of the diaries?

“I’ll need to search this room in detail once more.” Orpheus states before standing up from the armchair. After investigating the parlor again, he steps on the far end of the red carpet and realizes something is off. “Wait, the flooring sounds strange here.” Pulling up the rug, he finds a trapdoor that opens up revealing a ladder that goes into a dark hole. “I should have tried this earlier.”

Traversing down the ladder, Orpheus finds that it leads to a dark hidden cellar. “This looks like a secret room. Hmm?” Stepping on the painful fragments of glass he looks down and sees it came from a broken bottle with a yellowed label. Resuming his investigation of the cellar, his lantern lights up the pieces of furniture in the room. “These instruments...and this makeshift operating table…” Inspecting the table he notes that “some kind of experiment took place here”, and he further comments upon seeing a wooden chair with leather restraints on its armrests at the end, that “the straps look like they were used for an extended period of time. There are also some stains on the table but they have long since dried up.” He then turns his attention to the wooden medicine cabinet in the middle of the room. But before he can open it, he is startled by some movement towards the ladder behind him.

“Who’s there? Show yourself!”

He sees the flash of a little girl in a white dress and realizes that “It’s her!” the missing girl he was commissioned to find.

“Wait! I’m here to help! Your father asked me to come here.”

Running after her, he tries to get her to stop running, but is unable to stop her from escaping out of the door and closing the door behind her. Orpheus yanks on the door handle but it refuses to move.

“Tch. She locked the door.” He slams his body against the door to try and reach her, but it remains immovable. “Please, there’s no need for this! Damn it, she must have blocked the door with something! It won’t budge.”

Stepping away he is hit with a thought as it seemed more than the girl could do on her own. “Someone must be helping her.”

But he’s struck with confusion, wondering why the girl was so scared of him. “This doesn’t make any sense. She must have mistaken me for someone else. Did that secret room frighten her? Or, could it be that...she doesn’t want to see her family?[2]And who is it that could be helping her? This is anything but normal.[3]” Orpheus is suddenly overcome with exhaustion, blaming it on his years of insomnia. “But now, I feel a little tired, perhaps I should rest.” He returns to sit in the armchair and quickly dozes off.

He dreams of the little girl, still running away from him in the manor, but now with a ghostly glow about her. Going through the manor’s front door, the manor explodes into flame behind him, and within the inferno he sees the little girl being held in the arms of a brown-haired woman. The girl looks at Orpheus, and a tear falls from his eyes, before he abruptly wakes up in a cold sweat. Calming his heavy breathing, he removes his jackets and ponders, “What is it that lies in those forgotten memories?’ Trying to dig up the memories he saw briefly in his dreams, he starts to get an intense headache. Then, pulling out the picture of the girl from the Commission Letter he asks, “Will you too become part of my new nightmare?” before dropping it on the ground.

“Wait. The rain stopped? How long was I asleep? The door is open!” He rushes through the open door, and finds himself in an extremely long hallway of white tile and a red carpet, with windows all along the left wall letting in daylight, and a series of marble statues of the muses on the right wall. The ghostly little girl stands just ahead of him. He again runs after her, but she remains out of reach, as he hears the voices of people echo in the hall;

“Did you see him?”

“Perhaps they’re off playing in the woods again."

“That piccolo...is that a gift?”

“That’s a key!”

“How interesting. It sounds like...like…”

“Like the nightingale”

“His mother’s condition has worsened”

“Maybe we can help them”

“Poor child”

“They encountered some strangers in the woods. City folks?”

“Doesn’t seem like it.”

“Those drifters...they worry me…”

“Maybe we...We should inform Bane and Burke”

Eventually Orpheus gets tired and is unable to run after the girl any longer. He stops to catch his breath, but sees a huge cloud of darkness rush out from the end of the hallway and envelop the girl as it approaches him. The whole hallway darkens, and Orpheus suddenly feels pain in his left hand with the scar, which he grasps. The words “WAKE UP” is carved in red-hot words into his right wrist, and the ground beneath him turns to glass and shatters, before he falls into a void.

Orpheus again wakes up abruptly, gasping for breath, and it is apparent the entire scenario had always been a dream, even him “waking up” before. He shakes his head. “Another nightmare…”

He walks over to the door, now closed, and attempts to open it but it remains tightly shut. He sees that his right wrist still bears the words “WAKE UP” even in reality, and thinks “Perhaps, this is the answer to the puzzle.”

All this time, my reasoning has hinged on a single premise -- the diaries are not forgeries. The handwriting, wording, and markings also serve to establish them as reliable sources. But the peculiar identities of the Hunters and their incredible abilities challenge my very understanding of “reality.” In order for this investigation to continue, I must use “acceptance” as a method of interpretation here. But the contradiction is bound to continue perplexing me subconsciously. Now, this contradiction may just become the most crucial clue. The nightmare revealed a truth I had ignored -- “Nightmares do not lead to fear. On the contrary, fear gives birth to the most terrifying dreams.” To endow that which cannot be understood with reason is a manifestation of some primitive self-defense mechanism and the root of all myths.

That nightmare revealed the puzzle of the little girl, and the fear for the truth in my subconscious. As for the diaries -- the records are not exaggerated or distorted. The writers did “truthfully” record everything they saw. But those who believe they have written down the truth have actually seen a distorted reality. To be precise, something created a hallucination and perverted their perception and judgement. Something like…

Orpheus looks towards the secret room, where the medicine cabinet stands.

Scene Seven - Why Fear?[]

I must inspect that medicine cabinet again.

He walks towards the trapdoor and enters the secret basement once more. Once inside, he lights the candel on the cabinet's shelf and opens it to reveal several chemical flasks inside, as well as a pinned paper on one of the doors.

Belladonna, analgesic, mercury... If my assumption is correct... nothing is better for inducing hallucinations than drugs. But still, these are not enough to create such elaborate illusions... If I understand it correctly, it stands to reason that the last four bottles have a special meaning.

He puts the paper back, and inspects the first bottle from the left.

"Avoid, overdose..."

Orpheus pours the liquid in a small plate on the ground. A rat curiously approaches and drinks the liquid, only to fall unconscious on its side immediately after.

This symbol looks like Orpheus' lyre.

He brings the liquid close to his face to smell it, and after doing so stumbles backward, bringing a hand to his head. His vision gets blurry and he struggles to stay on his two feet.

It seems that the smallest dose can strip one of their ability to resist.

He puts the bottle back, and picks up the one in the middle instead. He again pours some of it in the white plate on the ground for the rat to drink. As soon as it does, it starts frantically running around the room away in fear, hissing loudly.

In the diaries, they called it Siren's Song. It sounds like it could be the source of these illusions. It reminds me of those wretched sailors who entered the siren's dreadful dream.

Orpheus brings the bottle close to his nose and smells the liquid. Once he does, figures and silhouettes of people, among which Doctor and Thief can be made out, flash before his eyes, causing him to hold onto the cabinet's shelf for grip. He frowns, puts the bottle back and picks up the last bottle. The symbol on it, much like the previous ones, corresponds with an entry on the pinned paper: "need ajust". Once again, he pours some of it in the white plate, and the rat drinks the medicine. However, this seems to have no effect whatsoever on the animal.

It seems nothing happened.

He smells the liquid inside, causing him no effect. He puts the bottle back in the cabinet.

What is this bottle for?

He again attempts to feed the medicine to the rat, pouring some more in the plate, only to reach the same conclusion as before. He smells the liquid again, and confused, puts the flask back on the shelf.

Hmm? Nothing seems to have happened.

He stares at the flask in the cabinet, and repeats himself.

Nothing seems to have happened.

But once he tries to reach out for the bottle, a sudden pain in his hand stops him. He looks around the room, only to notice the rodents sipping from the white plate, running away in the room's corner, and then come back to drink once more.

Huh?

Intrigued, the tries to reach for another flask in the cabinet, but is once again stopped by a sharp pain in his arm. He looks at his wrist to notice a phrase written on his forearm: "if you forget this you got it"

Memory. Its main function is to induce memory loss. This is indeed an unexpected breakthrough.

Scene Eight - The Truth behind Memories[]

This explains why a large number of events have taken place over the years, but not a word of them has spread to the outside world. Everything that took place here was ultimately erased from the memories of those involved. It’s truly the perfect crime -- a crime that doesn’t exist in anyone’s memory.

No, it doesn’t make sense. If these drugs were really made for this reason, the diaries would not exist. Something must have gone wrong. Maybe I’ve been wrong about this from the start. I’ve been considering the diaries as the key to these events, because they’re so special, and the content unsettles me. And the commission letter, made me think it was the “jamboree” that made them all disappear was central to this case.

But perhaps a change of perspective.

Those diaries...what if they’re not diaries at all, but some kind of record? A record of some kind of experiment...what if they’re linked to the cause of all this? Perhaps my memory loss is also related to this.

And obviously, that man knows something. It is likely that the only person who lost their memory is “I”.[4]

“Maybe, I can ask that person.”

Orpheus returns his attention to the three glass bottles with the strange labels in the medicine cabinet, and determines that the first one with the symbol of Orpheus’ lyre is the one he needs.[5] Taking a whole bottle of it, he leaves the cellar and stands before the broken mirror in the parlor. On its surface he writes “What do you know?“[6][7] Then he sits on the armchair. Drinking some of the chemical in the bottle, Orpheus immediately blacks out.

He awakens to a new message written on his right arm that continues the previous note: “Wake up from the memory.” Seeing this cryptic answer immediately enrages Orpheus. “What is it you’re trying to say! How long must I endure this deception!?”In a moment of enlightenment, he considers other options besides mockery from his other self.

Wait...so that’s how it is...I see now! If that person doesn’t want to say, he could ignore me and keep silent. If that person wishes to mock me, there are far more direct ways. So that person does know the answer, but can’t tell me ‘’directly.’’ This implies that this person is hiding from someone, and thus gave me the answer in the form of a code. I can’t speculate who this person is so wary of right now, but the meaning of this sentence is worth reading into: “from the memory.” ...It doesn’t sound like a hint to the memory itself, but an actual place. And by using such an implicit statement, this person clearly believes that I know this place -- it’s a place I’ve been to and still remember.

Orpheus considers what location “that person” was trying to hint at, and realizes the message is referring to the collection of “memories” found within the very room he was standing in -- the bookshelf of diaries, the other side which hung a painting of the muses including Mnemosyne of memory.

“I seem to have missed something.”

Oh yes, that picture. Memory, from the Memory. A place memory exists...They were all related to the same thing in Greek Mythology -- the fountain of memory guarded by Mnemosyne. The diaries are also vessels of memory, embodied memories. In other words, the diaries themselves are memories. So, the place guarded by Mnemosyne is...

Pulling books out of the shelves, he finds a “Muse Mark” that is broken up into three circular sections.[8] By aligning the Muse Mark so it is complete (by looking at scratches and dips to help), the entire bookshelf as well as the floor spins, taking Orpheus along with the bookshelf into the Study room on the other side.

“This is the answer to everything.”

Scene Nine - The Mercy of Memories[]

Orpheus finds that the Study bookshelves are filled with diaries, and further investigates the white dress, the wall painting of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, and a dusty suitcase on the desk.

"Rebuild memory, Hydra." Orpheus picks up the bottle with the Hydra label on the desk. "This is...the last symbol on the list of drugs." Determining that this chemical would return his memories to him, Orpheus drinks the liquid from the bottle.

He is suddenly assaulted by his memories.

That was the beginning and the end of everything. I was lost here, and "he" was born here -- it all began with my participation in that game. Whether succeeded or not, memories would be washed, and I would be thrown into the game once more. Repeated amnesia distorted my memory, it made me forget who I was and why I came here...and it gave birth to “him” -- or “them.” They dissected and eroded my soul, but using fragments of their memories I gradually drew closer to the truth behind the manor and the game.

I pretended to be at the mercy of those drugs, while trying to uncover the secrets buried here. Finally, I found Orpheus, and successfully escaped by faking my own death and hid in the manor. After this, a new group of victims entered the manor. I have witnessed the slaughter of innocents, but I cannot claim justice for them.

I remind myself to be patient, as this is the only chance I’ll get.

[Study: 10 years before]

A much younger Orpheus investigates the hidden study, and pulls down the picture on the wall, and comments on the family portrait. “A photo of a well-dressed couple, two forest rangers, and a child whose face cannot be identified.”

He crouches at the bookcases and begins to peruse the diaries...

Scene Ten - The Final Game[]

On the day the young girl starts playing the game, Orpheus uses the opportunity to sneak into the secret study. In the dimly lit study are diaries that sewer it from wall to wall and a scratched-up group photo. With some effort, Orpheus manages to locate his diary in the bookcase. The diary entries patch up the holes in his fragmented memories - The past before this nightmare began.

At the end of the diary is the photograph of a young girl - The daughter in the pair of mother and daughter.

"Who is she?"

Orpheus is full of questions. Since she is in his diary, she is definitely closely related to him. But even after searching through all the memories he had recovered, he fails to find the answer. In the end, he decides to investigate the pair's room again.

Upon returning to their room, Orpheus discovers that the occupant of the room seems to have packed up to leave. He finds a white dress belonging to a 20-year-old woman within the luggage, and the young girl's photograph is on the desk.

In the photograph, the young girl is standing before an iron gate with carved patterns. The gate looks quite familiar to Orpheus. On the calendar by the desk the date the young girl started playing the game is circled — July 15 — today.

Additionally, there is another diary and a vial on the desk.

In the diary, the young girl comes to the manor in search of 'Orphy," and after playing game after game and suffering all that torture, she stiff wholeheartedly hopes to make "Orphy" come home.

Tucked in the last page of the diary is a complete drug list, and a taunt from the organizer to Orpheus — "A reward far your foolish courage."

The Hydra that rebuilds memories is circled on the list.

It turns out that all of Orpheus' plans had been within the organizer's control. Now, the one in control of everything wants Orpheus to see the cruelest truth.

Orpheus loses control of his emotions and resolutely consumes the vial on the desk that is labeled Hydra. This time, Orpheus finally finds out who "Orphy" is, and who the mother and daughter are — All this time, he'd been ignorantly watching his loved ones step into hell.

In the perilous Darkwoods, Orpheus cares not about the danger here. He just wants to rescue the girl! But just when he's about to catch up to her, the terrifying Hunter appears behind him.

In his moment of desperation, Orpheus opens the value labeled with the name of the drug that induces memory loss. A moment later, the gas gushing out of it engulfs the Hunter, and then it swallows everything.

Orpheus, now with his memories restored, sits tiredly in the living room. Apparently, he'd failed to rescue the young girl ten years ago, and he'd even lost his memories in the process. It is why he'd returned here now.

As he gazes at the messages on his inner wrist, Orpheus notices that the two messages join together to form "Wake up from memories."

Now, he'd succeeded. But what should he do now that he'd woken up? Face a reality that's worse than a nightmare?

Orpheus returns to the secret study and locates the diary. He hopes to retrieve the photograph there, but he notices a newspaper clipping where the photograph had boon. On the clipping arc the fire from ten years ago that took everything from him and a message. "See you Orphy." At seems he isn't the only one who has returned here.

"Little Girl's" Quotations[]

  • General Messages
    • "Did you hear the nightingale's song? Yet I know that didn't come from a bird."
    • "Are you scared of that forest?"
    • "I know this place well, at least I used to."
    • "Go through this forest and you can get out of the manor. However, only those who live in the manor know the route - outsiders often get lost in it."
  • Responses
    • If players say the word: Orpheus, the Little Girl would reply:

"Is the name originated from Orpheus? In the past, my father was really, really into mythology. We had a lot of oil paintings narrating Orpheus back home. We even rehearsed a play about him, with my best friend playing Orpheus."

    • If players say the word: White Sand Street Asylum, the Little Girl would reply:

"I don't want to mention that place. It holds nothing but bad memories."

    • If players say the word: Oletus Manor, the Little Girl would reply:

"People always try to avoid the infamous manor, yet for some, this place is still filled with wonderful yet unattainable memories."

    • If players say the word: Lakeside Village, the Little Girl would reply:

"The child who survived became famous for selling his story. However, are those stories really the experiences of one child?"

    • If players say the word: Sacred Heart Hospital, the Little Girl would reply:

"It was created in kindness before it crumbled in hostility."

    • If players say the word: The Red Church, the Little Girl would reply:

"Before it was ruined, that pointed church was an elegant and sophisticated Gothic architecture. However, the owner thought it wasn't lively enough and hired people to renovate the flower garden. Yet, for some reason, no matter how much work they put into it, none of the flowers planted survived the second year."

    • If players say the word: Forest of No Return, the Little Girl would reply:

"That's... the origin of all nightmares."

    • If players say the word: Golden Cave, the Little Girl would reply:

"It used to be an ordinary mine before strangers started coming. They seemed to be looking for something other than ore. Later on, the incident happened and it was abandoned."

    • If players say the word: Arms Factory, the Little Girl would reply:

"It was rumored that the tragedy originated from a failed investment, while others said it was insurance fraud. Perhaps the mastermind behind all these didn't expect that even death failed to put an end to everything. Or perhaps that person didn't want it all to end."

    • If players say the word: Moon River Park, the Little Girl would reply:

"I saw a crinkled theme park ticket in the study as if it was soaked in water. The words on it had mostly faded."

Pay attention to the radar prompt on the top left corner. When the "Little Girl" is nearby, a prompt will pop up. The closer the "Little Girl" is, the darker its color. Note that the Hunter seems to have a way of teleporting the Little Girl, so you must keep an eye on the "Little Girl's" footprints.

Once you've discovered the "Little Girl," tap the interact button to achieve the goal.

The Hunter seems to have obtained a new ability in the Forest of No Return as they can now appear out of nowhere to disrupt your actions. Don't worry, though, as the Hunter's attack will only stun you for a while. Hurry up and work closely with your teammates to find the "Little Girl"! If you failed to find the "Little Girl" within the time limit, she will wander off in the Forest of No Return for a while, during which you can't interact or find her. Your tracks may also be exposed to the Hunter.

Finding the "Little Girl" doesn't end the game. Survivors must work together to decode 5 Cipher Machines and activate the Exit Gate in the Forest of No Return. However, the "Little Girl" will sync her memory with the player who found her, assisting them with decoding the Cipher Machines and increasing their basic interaction speed. She will also grant them a special ability to contain the Hunter.

As the "Little Girl's" guard, once you've been knocked down by a Hunter, the "Little Girl" will be lost for a while before rejoining the Survivors' team.

Take turns to guard the "Little Girl" and help her exit the manor to achieve the goal. However, the game isn't over just yet. The final result is what matters most.

This seems to be a toy that the "Little Girl" likes. Place it in the forest to attract her and mess up the Survivors' search. You may also place the toy by using the map.

Attack a Survivor to stun them for a while. However, it seems that this will expose your tracks and "Hers."

Once you've prevented the Survivors from finding the "Little Girl," your Presence will increase and unlock your Tier 1 ability. When the "Little Girl" is lost, try to eliminate as many Survivors as you can to win this game.
Once the Survivors have found the "Little Girl," the "Little Girl" will sync her memory with the player who found her, assisting them with decoding the Cipher Machines and increasing their basic interaction speed. She will also grant them a special ability to contain the Hunter. Use the mark on a Survivor's portrait to find out which player the "Little Girl" is syncing her memory with and pursue that player.

The Nightmare is coming to an end -- Don't look back.
Evade the pursuit of the "Nightmare" and escape from the Forest of No Return in this game within your memory.

"Memories" refreshed, yet the nightmare remains.

The Unending Nightmare is a dungeon where players team up to fight against the "Nightmare" Hunter. The dungeon is divided into four phases - Pain, Torture, Madness, and Deception - with increasing difficulty. Clearing the dungone in a previous phase will automatically unlock the next.

The dungeon challenges players to fight as Survivors against the "Nightmare" Hunter in the Forest of No Return, decode the Cipher Machines to activate the exit gate. Victory is achieved when a certain number of Survivors escaped.

Special Gameplay[]

In the Forest of No Return, apart from the "Nightmare," there is also an unknown gas in certain areas which inflicts negative effects. Players shrouded in the unknown gas will gradually enter the "Nightmare" status. Once the "Nightmare" status progress is complete, players will suffer damage which equals a normal attack.

On the other hand, in certain areas where the "unknown gas" is concentrated, a "Fear Rampage" will also be triggered. Players within the core area of the explosion will immediately suffer damage which equals to a normal attack.

Team-Up Rules[]

Players can enter the Pain dungeon on their own and the system will match AI teammates for them to complete the challenge. For the Torture, Madness, and Deception dungeons, players must form teams of four to enter.

Clearing Rules[]

2 or more players must escape the manor to clear the Pain, Torture, and Madness dungeons; for the Deception dungeon, 3 or more players must escape.

Special Condition: The unknown gas in the Deception dungeon is more concentrated. The concentration of the unknown gas will gradually decrease (i.e. difficulty will be lowered) as more teams in the server clear the dungeon.

Once the Deception dungeon is cleared, players will get a bonus event-exclusive title, "The End of the Nightmare."
