- The name and description of this dish are in reference to the Salmon of Knowlege, a creature in Irish mythology that was said to possess all of the world's knowledge. The first person to eat the Salmon of Knowledge would gain this wisdom in turn.
- This title is also sometimes associated with Fintan mac Bóchra, a seer known as "The Wise" from Irish mythology who transformed into a salmon in order to survive the Deluge, a great flood that destroyed most of Ireland.
- It may also be refencing the fact that salmons are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are beneficial to brain development.
