Backstory[]
Character Introduction[]
The Black Guard and the White Guard were like brothers since childhood. One day, as they traveled to Nantai Bridge, they noticed it was going to rain. The White Guard told the Black Guard to wait under the bridge while he went home to get an umbrella. As soon as the White Guard left, the rain poured down and the river rose. Despite the worsening weather, the Black Guard, reluctant to break his promise, stayed under the bridge. Soon after, the White Guard returned with the umbrella, only to find the bridge submerged and the Black Guard nowhere in sight. Overwhelmed by grief, the White Guard dressed only in white and carried the black umbrella he had grabbed that day, regardless of the weather, a haunted look etched in his eyes. His story reached a tragic end beneath Nantai Bridge, where he took his own life. As for the umbrella that witnessed their tragic friendship, it was purchased by a merchant and has since disappeared.[5]

Poem - A Rainy Night during the Ghost Festival (2020)[]
As the west wind blows the dreams of yesteryear to the riverbanks, I'm reliving those events from the past. I can't help but look forward to our reunion by the light of the blue lantern. In a trance, I seem to have returned to our date on the bridge back then.
I can hear the sound of the flute as a shadow shifts in and out under the moonlight. Despite my longing, as I wake up in the middle of the night, all I have are the fading night bell and the endless night.
A Set of Well-Kept Letters (2021)[]
[Letter]
To my honorable brother at Nantai
The borders are not at peace, but my fervor is unquenchable. I vow to protect these lands, even if means going to the frontlines myself. We cannot sit idly by and sigh as the fighting continues. My sweat, my blood, my youth—I offer them all to our cause, for if I die, I die with my honor intact. Until we achieve victory, will out lands be restored, and our kingdom be prosperous once more.
Sincerely, Su Gong (May 7 of the 9th Year of our Emperor Yongzheng)
[Letter]
Brother Su Gong, may my letter finds you well.
Yes, the borders are vast and desolate, and life struggles take root here. Even so, you do not speak of your own troubles but concern yourself with those of others. I would rather know of you, please tell me of your health and your prospects. Have your troubles abated? Do your old maladies bother you still?
All the same, I am gladdened by your heartfelt concern. I am not disconnected from the kingdom's woes by any means. The war brings strife to the lives of prince and pauper alike, and my heart aches from hearing the people's grievances. To bring them succor would give me greater pleasure than serving even the richest nobleman.
To tell you something of interest, some days ago I met a magnanimous wanderer. After a spell of good drinks and good company, we became close friends. Should you come to Fuzhou to visit me once more, dear brother, I would introduce him to you. I eagerly await your victorious return.
Since time immemorial, the soldier's path is a long and arduous one, strewn with the bones of our forebearers. I know you are a righteous man who does not fear death, but the battlefield is rife with danger, and we have yet to fulfill our promise to see one another. Never forget our...

A Test Record Draft Written with Different Handwriting (2022)[]
[Test Location] Lakeside Village
[Test Subject] 5-0-3 (using a special item)
[Test Item No.] 5-0-3-U
[Known Information]
The legends of item 5-0-3-U state that it contains mysterious powers. Experiments indicate the presence of bioenergy response within item 5-0-3-U. But the report is of the opinion that the legend of it "containing souls of the dead" is not linked to the said bioenergy response and suggests that it may be linked to its long-term exposure to a unique ecological environment.
The currently inexplicable anomaly is that when item 5-0-3-U is placed in a humid environment, magnetic fields of varying strength are detected once humidity variables are controlled and fixed at a set level. No correlation model has been established between the variable and outcome.
[Test Preparations]
① Place item 5-0-3-U at Point X on Ship A in Lakeside Village, then control the humidity in the area to reach the point where the highest degree of change is observed in the magnetic field.
② If Subject 5-0-3 enters the game, lure him to a marked location. If Subject Subject 5-0-3 isn't able to enter the game, this test record will be temporarily terminated.
[Observation Record]
(The second half of the draft was pasted on and written in handwriting that's clearly different from the first half. It's very messy and seems to have been written in a rush.)
Subject 5-0-3 has successfully entered the game.
Subject 5-0-3 is at the marked location and has noticed the abnormal watermark. In addition, the environment there is exceptionally humid, and the humidity increases with proximity to item 5-0-3-U.
Subject 5-0-3 is attempting to decode the watermark.
Subject 5-0-3 seems to have seen something that is beyond observation.
Subject 5-0-3 seems to have been affected and fallen into confusion.
... (The content is smudged.)
Subject 5-0-3's emotion is gradually stabilizing, and his mental state is taking a turn for the better.
Subject 5-0-3 has left the marked location and is heading to Subject 5-0-2's location.

Brother, I recognized you from the beginning. Even if you're wearing one of those jackets made by foreigners, I can still get that familiar fishy smell from you. Do you remember boarding that huge ship together back then? I'm sure you haven't forgotten me already, right?
I have a really nice treasure in my possession. I got it from a friend working on a foreigner's fleet. It seems like an antique from over a hundred years ago. As for information on its color and design, someone cultured like you definitely knows better than me.
Come meet me at the harbor if you're interested, Legwraps Huang.

A Message (2024)[]
The humid air, like the unending rain, blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Ancient tales and artifacts, meant to rest at the bottom of the sea, are traded once again under the grip of human obsession. "Spirits of the East" stir those dark musings, purging all enduring bonds, captivating souls, leaving no escape.
Water-stained Diary Pages (2025)[]
The parcel from my patron arrived at last today. The postman brought it through a light drizzle, but the wrapping was well prepared, and no real harm was done. Only the canopy of the antique parasol showed the faint damp of the rain. I had never thought someone would pay so handsomely to have me restore a foreign parasol.
By the look of it, it had long been steeped in seawater.
I took up this trade not only from a certain skill with my hands, but for the stories old objects often carry. This patron seems deeply attached to the parasol. To help me restore it to its former splendor, he has sent a trove of reference materials.
In return for such generosity, I am willing to make inquiries along our stretch of Chinatown, hoping to recover as much of its original design as possible.
From what I see, this parasol was once cared for with great affection. Even now, in the sections of the canopy that remain, I can still make out fine workmanship and subtle patterning. But seawater is merciless. The frame is nearly whole, yet the canopy has grown brittle, and in its seams lies a stubborn grit of mud and silt—marks I know well from salvaged goods. I have often seen such things serve as a refuge for life on the sea floor before being raised.
"Fear not," I told myself. "I am the best restorer on this street. I will bring you back to your former grace."
When I ran my hand over the handle, the chill of it bit sharply into my skin.
......
Today I cleaned the canopy. After a long soak and careful desalting, the surface bloomed again under the lamp light, its hidden patterns alive once more. The designs were like drifting clouds, their paths laid with purpose. Seeking an expert's advice, I went to an old master familiar with such motifs, a man from the same land as the parasol itself. I had scarcely begun to describe it when he identified the very piece I was restoring.
Could it be so well-known?
......
Master Hu would not rest until he had seen it, and even offered to help me without charge. His hands are no longer as steady as in his youth, yet his skill and experience far outweigh my own. With him beside me, I felt more certain of success.
When he looked upon the parasol, he stood silent for a long while, then sighed deeply. "It is indeed the very same."
During a pause in our work, my curiosity overcame me. The patron had promised more pay if I could learn new details of its past, so I asked about it.
Master Hu, unaware of my motive, seemed eager to speak at last. He told a story with the air of legend—of helpless villagers, of two constables bound in friendship from their first meeting, and of a magistrate swollen with power.
I have heard many tales tied to antiques, yet I saw the respect in Master Hu's eyes. I asked if he had known the constables.
"In my village," he said, "there is an old tale of two brothers. The elder raised the younger alone, their bond as deep as the river. One autumn, in a season of unending rain, the dam gave way. The elder, to save his ailing brother, pushed him to safety, but the current swept him away.
"The younger, heartbroken, kept watch at the river day and night, unwilling to leave. One night, worn by exhaustion, he fell asleep. When he woke, the rain still fell, but beside him lay a black parasol. Thinking it a gift from some kind soul, he held it above him and returned to his vigil. This time, his brother came walking from the river and told him to live with care, for no one would be there to warn him.
"He reached to take his brother's hand, but woke to find nothing—no brother, no black parasol. When he told his tale, people said it was the doing of two righteous constables, Xie Bian and Fan Wujiu. They were not brothers by blood, but were bound as such. Though long dead, they honored the brothers' devotion and came into dreams to give comfort.
"Since then, when someone is lost to the water, the family will go to the river on the Ghost Festival, open the parasol that once sheltered him, and call his name so that the constables might guide his soul home."
As we worked, Master Hu would sigh now and again, murmuring that he hoped the present owner would keep the parasol safe.
......
Drawn by the patron's offer, I went to Ramhurst Street, home to many from the Far East and to several antique shops. There I met a man who claimed to know its history. He once worked at the Blessed Luck Antique Shop, where the parasol had arrived by some hidden means. He could not say how, but he had heard a darker version of its story.
I paid him for what he knew, and he told me this: that Xie Bian and Fan Wujiu were loyal and just, but died falsely accused. Their spirits, bound within the black parasol they had carried the longest, turned vengeful. On rainy days, they would appear to take souls, and any who saw two tall, gaunt figures—one in black, one in white—would soon drown.
The parasol was said to be cursed. After Xie Bian's death, it passed from hand to hand, leaving tragedy behind, until it reached the former owner of Blessed Luck. He, too, was plagued by nightmares and, unable to lift the curse, passed it on quickly.
......
Legends are strange things, hard to prove. Yet the parasol before me sits in quiet stillness, showing no sign of menace. Still, after all the telling I had heard, a restlessness settled in my mind.
A week has now gone into the work. The weather has been changeable, rain and sun taking turns. Even with the windows shut, the air in my room holds a faint dampness.
The chill indoors now makes me shiver, and the parasol's handle is colder than the air. I set its ribs into the perfect order my patron required, "as good as new," and reached for its case.
The rain had not ceased when someone knocked at my door. Expecting the postman, I glanced from the window. In the brief white flare of a lightning strike, I saw them: two tall figures, one in black, one in white, standing side by side in the rain.

| Black Guard and White Guard were childhood best friends. As they traveled to Nantai Bridge one day, they noticed the sky had turned dark, and rain was about to fall. White Guard asked Black Guard to hide under the bridge while returning home to fetch a parasol. While White Guard was away, a sudden downpour filled the river, and Black Guard, who didn't wish to break his promise, drowned under the bridge. After White Guard returned, the water had flooded the bridge, and Black Guard had gone missing. Overwhelmed with grief, White Guard vowed to wear white and carry a black parasol no matter rain or shine. Eventually, he hanged himself under Nantai Bridge, with eyes filled with madness. The black parasol that witnessed the brotherly love between the two was purchased by a merchant soon after, and never to be seen again. |

Compiled Overview[]
The Black and White Guards are sworn brothers who met at a tavern during the year 1731. [14]
The local governor's son had been causing trouble in the tavern when Bi'an and Wujiu tried to intervene out of chivalry, causing the governor's son to be injured. The governer then filed a lawsuit against them, so that his son would not receive any punishment.[15] The judge of the case decided to only punish the one who started the fight, having secretly been asked by the corrupt governor to resolve the case within ten days.[16] Both confessed to be the culprit and that no one else was involved, in an attempt to protect the other.[17] Not long after, both of them were assigned to apprehend a culprit together. With the fugitive apprehended, Xie Bi'an decided to use the record to tell the "truth", and chooses to become the offender. [18].
Before the trial, Wujiu wrote Bi'an a letter, asking him to meet with him at Nantai Bridge to discuss about the assault.[19] Shortly after they arrived, it began to rain. Bi'an told Wujiu to wait for him under the bridge while he returned home to get an umbrella. After Bi'an left, the rain became heavier, and the river began to rise. Wujiu was hesitant to break his promise to Bi'an, and stayed under the bridge, eventually drowning before Bi'an returned. The case was then concluded: Wujiu was found guilty of the assault, but because he had drowned before the trial, the case was concluded.[20]
According to the legends, both of their souls are trapped in the umbrella,[21] and they're described as vengeful spirits who were rumored to committed suicide by villagers after they were falsely accused of avoiding their life sentencing during their deaths. They would both target victims on rainy days to steal their souls and have them drowned if they ever encountered figures of Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu. Their antique umbrella also plagues an owner who dares wield their item and have them experience nightmares for eternity.[22]
Events at the Manor[]
The umbrella would eventually make its way to the manor.[23] It was noted that the umbrella would generate magnetic fields at certain humidity levels, and was determined to be due to 'long-term exposure to a unique ecological environment'.[24]
For the test, the umbrella was placed at Point X on Ship A,[25] and the humidity levels were increased until 'the highest degree of change is observed in the magnetic field'. Subject 5-0-3, Jose Baden, was then lured to the location where he would find the umbrella. It is noted that he saw something 'beyond observation' before being affected by the magnetic waves - this could either be Fan Wujiu, Xie Bi'an, or both of them.[21]
The rest of the events of they are involved in are currently unknown.
Alternate Theories and Conclusions[]
- As their umbrella shows up in the animated backstory trailer for the First Officer, it is possible that the umbrella is related to the ship in some way, and may have even been responsible for crashing the Baden Ship.
- Both Black Guard and White Guard participate in the games in the form of their umbrella. However, the Wu Chang seen in game is most likely a hallucination.
- In Wu Chang's 2022 letter, it refers to how the First Officer saw "something beyond observation" after discovering the umbrella in the big ship of Lakeside Village. This could suggest that Wu Chang is a hallucination that only the First Officer, or those who have interacted with the umbrella, could see.
- Both Black Guard and White Guard are most likely orphans.
- In ancient China (and even in modern times), the belief that a child is their parent's flesh and blood and hurting the child was equal to hurting their parents was prominent.
- This was taken to an extreme example, where children would refuse to cut their hair, as they also believed hair was a gift from their parents. (身体发肤,受之父母,不敢毁伤,孝之始也;立身行道,扬名于后世,以显父母,孝之终也。)
- Assuming both White and Black Guard were willing to give up their lives for the other (upon the consideration of harming oneself is equivalent to harming your parent, a highly taboo act), yet kept their hair long, they were most likely orphans.
- It is theorized that Wu Chang's umbrella might be able to cause rainfall or storms from Wu Chang's possession of it.
- In Ashes of Memory Chapter 2, if Alice decides to go to the Greenhouse during the day time, Wu Chang's umbrella can be seen sitting near the beehives. Later, during the nighttime storm, if Alice chooses to go the Greenhouse again, Wu Chang's umbrella is noticeably absent. Given Wu Chang's lore connection to a storm, it is possible that the umbrella somehow caused the storm whether through its own free will or through the actions of another.
- It is further theorized that Baron DeRoss specifically acquired Wu Chang's umbrella for its rainwater ability to help grow the plant materials he uses to the best quality. Rainwater is known for being the best kind of water a plant can receive for the greatest benefits and if the Baron wanted his materials to be of the highest quality, having something that can guarantee rain would be ideal.
- It is speculated that Qi Shiyi is the writer in Wu Chang's 2025 letter who was trying to restore Wu Chang's umbrella given the fact that Chang Chip sold his store to her across Ramyhurst Street.
- Qi Shiyi's store was called the Royal Scenery that was established in the same location as Chang Chip's former store in Chinatown. However, she might've renamed it "Bamboo Study" according to her 9th Deduction Quest after raising a large loan from assassination contracts she accepted.
- However, with no direct mention of her antique store, it could also be an unknown restorer instead.
Extended Backstory[26]
Fan Wujiu is a straightforward and stubborn person, while Xie Bi'an is humble and soft, with a loyal heart.
The two men have been friends since childhood and are like brothers.
One day when they were walking together to Nantai Bridge, it was about to rain, so Xie Bi'an asked Fan Wujiu to stay under the bridge while he went home to get an umbrella. After Xie Bi'an left, the rain begins to pour down the river rose. Fan is reluctant to leave the bottom of the bridge to keep his promise with Xie, so he stayed there. Soon Xie returned to Nantai Bridge with his umbrella, only to see that the river was over the bridge, and Fan Wujiu had drowned. Xie Bi'an was so distraught that he wore only white clothes from then on, carrying the black umbrella in rain or shine, and looked so mad that he finally died under the Nantai Bridge, leaving behind the black umbrella that witnessed his life and death.
The umbrella was bought by a merchant shortly afterwards.
The merchant placed the umbrella in the hall. After placing it in his house, he soon finds his house full of the sounds of men sighing and crying as he hears walking around at night. People believed that Xie Bi’an (White) resided in the umbrella, so the merchant hired a Taoist to do something about it. The hall seemed to quiet down at first as things appeared to return to normal. Not long after this though, the merchant met the bandits while visiting his relatives and died on the way, the house was in chaos, and the umbrella disappeared.
Trivia[]
- It is implied that Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu may be in a romantic relationship
- Their 2020 Letter refers to their meeting at Nantai bridge as a 'date' instead of using another word that does not hold romantic context.
- In the modern Chinese media, especially donghua, 'Sworn Brothers' is a common term used to describe a gay relationship without explicitly saying so.
- Please note that in a historical Chinese context, sworn siblings are people who have chosen each other as part of their family. Their relationship is not necessarily romantic.
- Xie Bi'an and Fan Wujiu are based on the HeiBai WuChang, two Chinese deities who escort the spirits of the dead to the underworld.
- Their names are the exact same as the names of the HeiBai WuChang, and their backstory's key points mirrors those in one version of the HeiBai WuChang's origins.

Manor Game Table References[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Wu Chang's 2022 Letter confirms the location as Lakeside Village.
- ↑ First Officer's 2022 Letter implies that an Executioner was present in this Manor Game, monitoring Jose’s mental state specifically. However, this direct confirmation remains unclear.

- ↑ 4.0 4.1 In Painter's 2024 Letter, it is stated that Edgar was willing to let himself be sacrificed by Patricia and mentions his "swan song".
- ↑ 5.0 5.1 5.2 In First Officer's 2023 Letter seemingly implies that Edgar, Vera, and Jose finished their Manor Game. But as Edgar is implied to be dead from his 2024 Letter those were likely Jose's delusions.
- ↑ 6.0 6.1 In Wu Chang's 2022 Letter, it appears First Officer was affected by the umbrella in some way, however it is currently unknown what happened as a result.
- ↑ It should be noted Wu Chang's serial number is referring to their umbrella.
- ↑ Based on the current information given by Wu Chang's 2022 Letter, it is known that the Manor used the power of Wu Chang's umbrella to affect on First Officer in some way, rather than using the duo as a hunter in the Game.
- ↑ Enchantress's 2023 Birthday Questions state that Cowboy was the only one spared by Enchantress but it is unknown what she spared him from but it is possible that Kevin was spared from the death of poison he had drank to protect her.
- ↑ Cowboy's 2022 and 2023 Letters heavily imply that Kevin had already escaped the Manor before the Manor Game began.
- ↑ Perfumer's 2022 Letter uses 5-0-5 while other letters use 5-?-5.
